Experimente a serenidade e charme da casa Riddiford.
My husband and I spent a week at this cottage and loved it! We were looking for a quiet place near the ocean that would give us a true flavor of the Maine seacoast. This area has not been ruined by the tourist trade as have places like Boothbay Harbor. The small towns of Damariscotta and South Bristol are delightful and relatively untouched by much of the commercialism that cheapens many towns along the coast.
The decor of the cottage is quaint and warm, with much of it being original to the time it was built (1920's, I think) As you sit on the porch on a quiet evening you can tell the chop of the water by the sound of the halyards hitting the masts of the many sailboats anchored in the small cove. It's a short walk to the fishing village of South Bristol where you can watch the drawbridge letting the fishing boats in and out, AND you can get great fresh fish in the small market there. The cottage is close to some wonderful tourist spots, such as Camden, a pretty sea town with great restaurants, Monehegan Island, one of Andrew Wyeth's homes, and Pemaquid Point, our favorite place to sit and view the rugged coast.
It's not very often one can experience a place near the ocean that has not been negatively effected by man and his need for commercial entertainment, but this area has held onto its originality. My husband and I will one day return, and we highly recommend it to others.,
Our second stay at the Riddiford in South Bristol. Again a great stay in a very comfortable spot! South Bristol may not be a tourist attraction like other locations in Maine, but it is a peaceful fishing village that has friendly people offering fantastic seafood right off the boat at prices you will not find elsewhere! The laid back atmosphere of this cove along with with the comfortable accommodations of the cottage make this a great getaway!
Many thanks to the Riddiffords!
Plenty to see and do within short driving distances: Damariscotta, Boothbay Harbor, Pemaquid Point and lighthouse, Monhegan Island, Camden, and Bath Maritine Museum and ship yard.
This is terrific cabin. The three bedrooms are each different, perfect for mixed family groups, there is ample towels and bedding, and the showers are very modern. The kitchen has all the cookware you'll need. Great BBQ too. The fireplace was set, the TV worked fine, and the WiFi did too. My only complaint was that that ocean cove view is mostly blocked by trees, and there is no direct access from the cabin - but the price is right.
The cottage has much more than anticipated, rustic appearance, very homey and comfortable with much to look at and admire. It's obvious the owners have a lot of pride in their peaceful property. South Bristol does not have any tourist traps but does offer many friendly people who are willing to help you with suggestions. Our highlights were Pemaquid Lighthouse, the Botanical Gardens near Boothbay, the beach at Reid State Park, and hikes at Dodge Point and the Audubon trails near Bremen. For food breakfast at Seagull Shop next to lighthouse, lunch at Moodies, for supper scallops at Osiers in town and lobster rolls at Reds. The whole package grew on us as the week progressed, still more to see, so very likely will return. Highly recommend a peaceful midsummer getaway!
This was our second visit here..and it was great! Spent lots of time eating lobsters and oysters available locally, and drove much of the area for some beautiful scenic views right from the car! Had my 87 year old mother along, she enjoyed the spaciousness and comfort of the cottage. We had fun browsing the shops in both Damriscotta and BoothBay, and ventured to an Alpaca Farm and Pemiquid lighthouse and museum. An especially good place if you are tired of the "high touristy" feel of Boothbay and Freeport. Best part of the week for me was the quiet mornings with my reading right out on the covered porch.
The property is clean and very well maintained and equipped. The beds and the furniture are comfortable and I could watch my Red Sox on the cable TV. We couldn't imagine a nicer cottage for our two week stay. The Riddifords have thought of everything to make the guests feel at home.
