My husband and I recently returned from spending a week with four of our friends at Birch Point Cottage. This was perfect--exactly what we had hoped for when we thought of going to Maine. Andy was a great help. He and Lynn obviously love their Maine home--it feels like a home, not a typical rental. The cottage is cozy and comfortable and the decks are spacious and have great views,. I loved going down to the beach at all times--we were fascinated by the difference between the high and low tides. My husband and I love to hike, and again Andy was so helpful by marking some of his favorite trails and their descriptions. We loved the trails on Campobello as well as going to the lighthouse there--quite a trek, but well worth it--there were whales swimming right beneath us!. We toured the Roosevelt cottage and grounds, and all of the beaches there. We also loved the East Quoddy Light house and trails there. Reversing Falls is fascinating--make sure to go about an hour before the tides change for the full effect. Have a drink a Annabelle's--the eastern most tavern in the US and talk with the friendly residents. And then, again, thanks to
Andy, we went every day to Bayside Chocolates--great homemade chocolates--but, even better, Gene is a lobster fisherman, and we bought fresh lobster and cooked it at the cottage in the great kitchen--what a treat. We ate in every night because it was such a pleasant place to enjoy with our frinends.
It was hard to decide whether to go exploring in the area or stay at the cottage and relax. Sitting on the upper deck, two Bald Eages flew right over head. After that, we saw them fly to their nest on the island in front of us every night.
Thanks again Andy and Lynn--we couldn't have asked for anything better.
Due to some road construction and other things that slowed us down, we arrived after dark. The street was a little hard to see and I'm sure we surprised a neighbor because we drove down his long driveway before realizing our error. The housekeeper had some family issues so she forgot to leave the porch light on. With the help of the headlights, we found the key and let ourselves in. I have to say the house is beautiful. We had a hard time finding the second and third bedroom because of a cryptic note on the door to the lower level, which is where they were along with the laundry room and the second bathroom. Those bedrooms had lovely screened-in balconies with wonderful views of the trees and water. The house is partially built into the cliff. The main floor and third floor balconies also had great views. The beds were made up and the house was clean. There was something gritty in the drawers that my sister used, probably sand. Everything the owner told us would be there, was there. Even the pantry items came in handy. The only thing missing was powdered creamer which I left the rest of mine for the next renters. The sunrises and sunsets weren't quite as lovely as promised, but it seemed that our week was the week for a lot of fog. Renters should be reminded how isolated the house is out on the peninsula. I would skip the Sunrise Cafe in Lubec--our breakfast took a long time to get and the eggs were overdone and the bacon wasn't done enough. We did enjoy the crab rolls at Uncle Kippy's by the IGA. Be warned, they're closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. It was hard to find a place close by that served whole lobsters so we drove to Betty's Crabmeat in Pembrook and picked up 6 1-1/4 pound soft-shell lobsters at the nice price of $6.99 a pound that I cooked. Betty is a sweetheart and not only stayed on the phone with us and talked us to her little shop but told me exactly how to cook the lobsters. I was traveling with my sister and my brother and we're all in our 60's. We explored several state and national parks. We didn't see much wildlife except for birds and the porcupine we surprised coming down Birch Point. The whale watching tour didn't produce much in the way of whales, but we saw quite a few porpoises, seals and seabirds, including cormorants. We had a wonderful time. We probably won't be back to Maine because we have lots of other places to explore before we get to the point that we can't, but we loved Maine. Our country is beautiful
This was my wife and I's second trip to Lubec Maine and this time we wanted to take along our children and grandchildren to share the peaceful tranquility of Lubec. We knew approximately where the house was located, but when we turned off the hard road and headed down the 1/4 mile dirt lane we had no idea what to expect. WOW - when we came up over the last rise in the dirt lane and came through the trees what an awesome retreat awaited our arrival. The house is located at then end of the road on a secluded peninsula overlooking Johnson Bay towards Eastport, directly facing a beautiful island bird sanctuary. You will be truly amazed at the views you can enjoy from any of the 3 decks. No cell phone service, no internet, no people, no crowds, no traffic - just PEACEFUL TRANQUILITY!!!! We had fresh seafood and lobster at the house every night for dinner, you can purchase seafood from many local vendors, the house is fully equipped for meal preparations. Make sure to visit Quoddy Lighthouse and hike all of the trails-I highly recommend the coastal trail and the Artic Bog Trail. Make sure to travel to Eastport either by car or passenger ferry from Lubec's dock and visit Raye's Mustard Factory (they only make mustard on Wednesday's & Thursday's) be sure to eat on the waterfront at Quoddy bay Lobster for the best lobster roll in Maine! Enjoy the harbor in Lubec for beautiful views, be sure to go whale watching aboard the Tarquin that leaves from "The Inn on the Wharf"and don't miss Lubec's open air farmers market on Saturday mornings from 9-12. I can't say enough good things about Lubec it has become my favorite vacation destination, a great place to get away from everything and just enjoy nature's beauty. Birch Point is a great house and Andy was real easy to work with, I highly recommend this house for any vacation.
We just returned home from this wonderful cottage. Our time spent here was nothing less than fabulous! We knew it would be wonderful, but it was so much better than the pictures can show. There were 4 adults and two children in our party - the cottage was cozy enough for us all to spend time together, but still had places that we could go get some time to ourselves. The kitchen was stocked with everything our family of cooks needed (though i would recommend bringing a chef's knife- the ones in the cottage were seriously dull). The views from the three decks were extraordinary - the upstairs deck being perfect for gazing at the star filled night sky. The owners have also done a great job of providing more than enough pamphlets, maps and brochures of the area, along with many books about the history of the area. We did some serious hiking, followed by some serious eating...:) We loved the view and the food at Cohills..and the hard pear cidar wasn't bad either. Monica's Chocolate is a must stop - her passion for her craft shines through in her personality and her most delicious chocolates...we were in there quite often (do yourself a favor and try the hot chocolate)! Bold Coast Smokehouse was excellent...bring the ribs home to grill - YUM! Whale watching out of Eastport was wonderful, as was the trail at West Quoddy Light. The best part though was just relaxing at the house, hanging on the deck with our coffee, playing board games, going down to our beach, napping with windows open so the wonderful breeze could come in, playing the piano...just unplugging and slowing down for a while. A most needed and appreciated week.
We had a wonderful time and enjoyed the peace and quiet of Birch Point home. We arrived in misty rain and fog and left in rain and fog, in between every day was beautiful around 68 -70. I think mostly sunny with a breeze. We saw a bald eagle on deck. We also enjoyed Campobello, drove the carriage roads, went to Liberty Point, which is spectacular, we had never been there before. We had wonderful meals, great beachcoming.
I spent a week at this amazing Maine rental home once in June 2008 and again in June 2010 and hoping again in June of 2011!! This was my first truly relaxing vacation. When you wake up its amazing to sit on the deck and just read a good book while listening to nature at its finest. You then can go kayaking, hiking one the many trails, or fishing at the many lakes in the area. When in town you can talk to the locals and buy lobster caught that day, so it’s as fresh as you will ever get it. We took a sea salt making tour and got to taste many flavors of sea salt, which was really awesome, then hit up the local art gallery for items made in Maine (such local pride) while in town you can enjoy some cocktails at Annabelle’s the most Eastern Pub in the US. and then head home to cook up your lobster and enjoy the views of the water while drinking a glass of wine or blueberry beer. You don’t need to spend a lot of money while you are hear because most activities are free the most you will spend will be going whale watching or Puffin watching only area on the east coast you will a real Puffin. I cannot put into words how wonderful my stay was and the owner are nothing short of amazing so helpful and kind even from NJ they make sure your stay is amazing. I would never stay at another property in Maine the house is perfect.
So close your eyes and picture waking up to a quite home no city traffic the only horn you hear maybe a faint fog horn in the distance, next you enjoy a homemade breakfast with blueberry pancakes while sitting on the deck, next you walk along the shore line collecting sea glass, before heading to the West Quoddy light house and taking a nice hike along the cliffs (it’s very safe) and the bog. Have a nice picnic with your friends, children and loved ones, then enjoy a beer, wine or chocolate in town before heading home to cook up the lobster, corn, and clams on the grill all while looking over the water. Once you finish dinner head to the third floor and sit on the smaller deck and watch for bald eagles, and once its dark out look at the clearest skies you've ever seen and identify the constellations. Then head off to bed, even though you feel like you have been living a dream all day.
So if you are looking for an amazing vacation look no further and at this price it’s a steal for this piece of heaven. Once again thanks you Lynn and Andy for sharing your amazing home with me and my family dogs included!!!
