KEMAH COTTAGE - SUPERIOR EXPERIENCE

First let me say we have never rented a house before so we had some reservations, however, after speaking to Sharlene I felt comfortable and knew everything would be great. Also, I do not do “reviews” but wanted everyone to know what a great place this is.

We arrived the afternoon of May 27th. Our initial impression coming into the driveway was how peaceful and private the yard was. It was separated from the street by loads of shrubs and trees and the covered front porch is huge and well furnished. The front yard is decorated with handmade stepping stones and it a wonderful place just to relax, have coffee and watch the little bit of traffic go by.

Then we opened the front door. My jaw dropped and I said “WOW”. The place is beautiful and much more than reflected in the photos and descriptions. It is beautifully furnished with loads of character and imagination. Antiques and high end furnishings abound. There is a complete living room, dining room, kitchen and service porch with a washer and dryer.

The kitchen is very adequate and fully stocked with utensils and all the things you need to make a nice meal. Put in a bag of groceries and you are ready to go. The appliances are an electric stove, French door refrigerator, and dishwasher. Is it well stocked with all the dishes, cups, glasses, silverware, etc. that you could possibly need.

The two bedrooms are located one in the front by the living room and one off the back off the kitchen. The front room has the biggest bed I have ever seen and it is comfortable and definitely a high end mattress. The furniture is all antiques and it is decorated perfectly. The attached bath has a tub and a separate shower and the room is huge. Again it has all of the things you need for a stay including linens for the bath and the bed.

The back bedroom (where I stayed) had a regular king size bed that was very comfortable. Again all high end linens and it too had antiques and was a huge room. It had an attached bath with a shower only and it was great. The back bed room also had French doors on to the back covered porch. The porch overlooked a nicely landscaped and totally fenced backyard. The porch was furnished with a table and chairs and a bar-b-q grill. Outside, both front and back, were like private gardens.

Overall the Kemah Cottage was comfortable, quiet, well-furnished and just a nice slice of heaven. We had no issues at all and are just waiting to go back again. It also has Wi-Fi and Cable

Wonderful stay!

What a delightful get away this was for my husband and I! Our life-long friends joined us for a much needed reunion and the cottage provided that and so much more. Beautifully appointed, lots of character and personal touches throughout – it had everything that we could possibly need. We travel a lot and the little touches were much appreciated. Being so close to local attractions and coming “home” was an absolute pleasure! We all will be recommending this rental in the future and look forward to staying again!

A True Gem, Charming & Cosy

This cottage is truly a gem and the most cutest place we have ever stayed. It offered lots of charm and is decorated very eclectic. Very cozy, my husband and I felt right at home. We were very happy that the kitchen was well equipped because we like to wake up to breakfast and a hot cup of coffee. There was even a grapefruit tree to go with the meal. The house was clean and the beds oh so very comfortable and the antique electric fireplace was beautiful. We loved the front and backyard covered patios which felt like an extension to the home and we enjoyed our morning coffee and family conversations. The cherry on the sundae was that our 2 little ones "Bichons" were welcome and the cottage also provided a dogie door. It is so hard to find pet friendly accommodations and with no pet charge. We could not believe it that is rarely offered and our babies loved the back yard. Even the front patio had a gate on it so we did not have to worry. It appeared to be an unassuming small town with some trailers but quiet and the location is fantastic- close to the Kemah Boardwalk & Galveston Island where we spent time and loved it. The area seemed to offer lots of things to do with excellent restaurants. Our family highly recommends this cottage. We will definitely stay again!

Loved It!

Thank you for a wonderful visit to Texas! Me and the guys loved the cottage and will be back again for sure! We booked it to go on an excursion to clear lake and had a great time. The cottage offered all the amenities of home. Comfortable beds. Decorated nicely and well equipped. The covered patios (front and back) were awesome. Nice landscaping that even had fruit trees! Thanks again Charlene for an awesome getaway!

Killed 35 roaches and 6 wasps in 1 day with a standard bug bomb. Really cute place, but infested!

The cottage is super cute, with everything you need for a great stay. The neighborhood is as advertised, run down, but we walked daily and we were never worried. We didn't walk at night. The real problem was inside the house. Unlike most, we were their and working from within the cottage, so spent most of the week at the cottage. After numerous roach sightings I went and got a roach bomb and bombed the house. On return I swept up 35 roaches and 6 wasps. This were good for a few days, but then we began to see baby roaches and decided it was best to just end our vacation early. The owner states in a previous complaint that they have a professional service. We learned that is not the case. We found roach bait in the cupboards, so they clearly know of the problem, they just haven't figured out how to deal with it. Again if you are gone most of the day and just using it for sleeping, you may get lucky. Other than the infestation, the place is really darling. It's unfortunate. The owner is very good at making every complaint the fault of the people complaining. All you have to do is read the negative reviews to know that. This is my first negative review about any place I have stayed. I have been to every state in the US, so I know about all the local bugs and insects and critters. And I know there are ways to keep them controlled. On the good side, it's only a few miles from Kemah Boardwalk. That's a great day trip. About 15 minutes from NASA, another great day trip. 20 minutes from Galveston, which is where we spent several days. The price is reasonable, but if we ever go back, we'll pay more to have a place without roaches.

Resposta do proprietário: I am so sorry this guest had such a negative experience at the cottage. I had guests booked on Dec 11-14, Dec. 23-26 and Dec. 28-31 departing the day before this guests’ arrival. None of the other guests mentioned any infestation. Regardless, I scheduled my help to treat the cottage, especially as I wanted to ensure the Palmetto bugs were addressed (that normally come from outside). As far as pesticides, I had purchased professional products (Vendetta for small roaches, Tekko- Roaches and fleas, Lamda Star for large roaches, and Fenva Star Ecocap). When it rains, as it did most of December, the Palmetto bugs can migrate to the indoors. I did everything possible to accommodate this guest. Unfortunately, I could not make him happy.

Tough Neighborhood

I would not choose to stay here again. Although it’s inexpensive and conveniently located to both Kemah and my parents house, there were many issues that outweighed those benefits.

The barbecue grill is so rusted that I would not even consider cooking on it. It would be better to not have a grill at all, since I bought charcoal and steaks and was unable to grill unless I purchased a pit.

When we arrived, the next door neighbor was burning trash in his front yard. The smoke was billowing over to the rental house and the smell lasted for many hours. The first night we were here, there was a ruckus in the neighborhood and at least six police and sheriff units patrolled the neighborhood for the next two hours with floodlights. There was an unchained pit bull in the yard two doors down so we were not comfortable walking the dog. While the unit owner cannot control these type of issues, the neighborhood is not good. Some lots have dilapidated RVs that are being lived in, yards that are not maintained, etc. This is a rough place and I did not feel safe coming home at night.

There was no laundry detergent, the sink was broken and spewed water sideways every time it was turned on. Most places I stay have at least some items around the house. This place had absolutely none (not even salt and pepper). It was cold one night (about 40 degrees) and the little space heaters are totally insufficient to heat the house. If you plug in all three of the heaters it throws the breaker.

On a positive note the house was furnished well and the back yard was nice. The owner should spend some time fixing the issues I mentioned, but unfortunately they will be unable to fix the neighborhood.

Resposta do proprietário: The cottage is very nice and I have many good reviews stating so located in an unincorporated small town with no deed restrictions. It is sad that there are some run down properties and it hurts property owners that have nice ones like mine but it is a small old town of 8000 very diversified but with its share of residence in the lower income bracket. The police do patrol the area as no community is immune to crime. Actually, the whole area is heavily patrolled Seabrook, Kemah, Clearlake Shores, San Leon and League City due to the Kemah Boardwalk being a tourist area. Every town has its own police department and they are serious about DWI. I have advertised that the cottage has a grill; I will no longer provide one as my guests have not taken care of it. The electric heater in the fireplace is supposed to heat 1000 sq. ft. alone and the cottage is 1200 sq. ft., maybe the one in the bedroom needs to be plugged into a different outlet. I have had guests mention that the breaker flips but when there are 4-6 guests running all appliances at the same time this can happen. The cottage does provide many amenities, washer & dryer, well equipped kitchen, ect. but laundry detergent and spices generally not provided. There is a Family Dollar within walking distance for guests that need to purchase extra things for their stay. The cottage is very close the Kemah Boardwalk and to Galveston Island. It provides nice accommodations, very private to the street and is comfortable and secure with lots of landscaping in the front of the house. It was my home for 5 years and a vacation rental for 6 years. I do my best to accommodate my guests; it is a great value compared to a hotel. I have a lot of good reviews and cannot please all guests.
