We could not have been happier with this home. The pristine grounds, the view from every window, the fabulous porch, and the warm hospitality of the owners made this a wonderful vacation for us. The house was very well maintained, in a great location, and the attential to detail was right on. The artfully placed antiques, the collection of books on the area, binoculars for creature watching (we took them on a whale watch), charcoal grill, fire pit, kayak, etc... The amenities were all there for us. We had perfect summer weather every day, and even got a full September moon on our last night.
We recently stayed at Beckoning Bay Cottage to celebrate our 40th anniversary. What initially attracted us was the picture of the sunroom at the back of the house which almost looked too good to be true! Well, the truth be known, it's actually even better than the pictures show and an amazing place to relax and refresh before and after a day of exploring the Mid-Coast area. The cottage was immaculately clean and provided anything and everything we could have wanted or needed.
The location of the cottage was also great - enabling us to easily travel from Freeport to Camden and visit all the quaint, little towns like Wiscasset, Damariscotta, Boothbay, and New Harbor in between. (Don't let the line at Red's Eats discourage you - just do it for the best lobster rolls in the world!) Mostly, though, when we think of location, we think of just enjoying the sunroom and back yard, complete with an outside patio (where we ate breakfast each morning), fire pit, and boat dock on the lake.
David was a wonderful host, meeting us at the cottage when we arrived to show us around and making himself available for any questions we might have. When we realized that we had left a bag at the front door, he even graciously mailed it to us right away - and followed up!
Don't hesitate to stay at this "hidden gem" of a home. We hope it will "beckon" us back many times in the future!
We had a great trip to Beckoning Bay over the Columbus Day weekend. Thank you for your hospitality and thoughtful gift basket David!
The cottage's enclosed porch and boat access were our favorite features. We enjoyed the view of the moon on the lake at night while playing board games and reading, and we watched the beautiful sunrise from the breakfast table each morning. With 3 kayaks and a canoe at the dock, we could all explore the lake together.
The cottage had all of the modern conveniences. The kitchen was well-equipped and two bathrooms were a luxury for an aunt traveling with her sister's family of 4.
Though it rained for 1/2 of the weekend, there was plenty to see and do in the nearby towns of coastal ME. Newcastle was an ideal location for day tripping to Portland, Freeport, Boothbay and Rockland...and the pumpkin festival in Damariscotta was a hit with the kids.
Thanks again David!
The house was absolutely immaculate. Layout was perfect and David greeted us when we arrived. Thank you. It was a pleasure and it worked perfectly for our needs. We will be back.
We just returned from our wonderful vacation at Beckoning Bay. After adjusting our body clocks we began waking up at dawn to spectacular sunrises each morning. Enjoyed coffee and breakfast on the expansive porch overlooking the Great Salt Bay.
This is a lovely home tastefully appointed and very welcoming. Plenty of room to relax and enjoy vacation. Just minutes from Damariscotta restaurants and shops. Conveniently located to travel around the mid coast. We love exploring this beautiful area and the location is perfect for fun filled day trips. Could not ask for a more gracious and attentive host. David is thoughtful, informative and kind. We were fortunate to vacation here and look forward to returning.
Pictures represent the house well, but the home not at all. They can't convey the quiet of the property, the joy you feel when you awake overlooking the Salt Bay, or the contentment that awaits after returning from a day of sightseeing.
When we walked in the door I thought - this is going to be a great week....and I was right! Owner has thought of everything needed to make your stay pleasantly comfortable. Lawn is loaded with flowering bushes, of which I cut some and created small inside arrangements. There is a dock AND a fire ring. The yard is on a slight hill, but not at all difficult. (and I am presently handicapped). But the view is great from the house too - in all weather! Necessities are here; no need to rush off to Hannafords after a long travel day. But when you are ready, it is a short drive away, along with a chain drug store, a Dollar Tree, a shop selling Artisan Bread, a fresh produce stand, and others I just never made it into.
Downtown is a charming mix of stores, cafes and restaurants. This is the hometown of Reny's, a Maine Classic. Pemaquid and its' beautiful lighthouse are a short 15minutes away, and my favorite lobster pound (Muscungous) is only a few minutes farther. Close to Rte 1, you are perfectly situated to explore the best of the Maine Coast.
The lay-out of the house is great - everything on 1 level, both baths are in the hall, and the kitchen is open - allowing you to visit friends or enjoy the view. All are spotless. Furniture is "cozy, comfortable, coastal cottage" with some beautiful antiques mixed in - all in a restful palette of blue and yellow, with cranberry accents. If you need extra sleeping arrangements, the porch and sunroom can be used, leaving the living room, kitchen, and baths for the earliest risers. There is a modest, nicely furnished deck, single car garage and charcoal grill. No plastic chairs, threadbare sheets, or postage sized towels here. Imagine that you had a generous, wealthy Aunt who lived in Maine. This would be her home.
During the years, we have rented 30+ homes, all over the country. None have exceeded our expectations as has Beckoning Bay. It is truly a vacation haven, with lovely owners who genuinely want you to love the home, and the area, as much as they do.
The ONLY thing I would love to see is a gas log insert in the living room. Of course, then I might never leave, which would cause problems for everyone!
Damariscotta é a porta de entrada para a península histórica Bristol com seu famoso Pemaquid Farol e saliências rochosas (e em Maine trimestre do Mint US!) aldeias piscatórias, e cenas cativantes para a sua armação e lona ou câmera. Route US 1 downeast ou upwest irá revelar charme Maine adicional e grandes memórias.
