Not wanting to stay in a cabin isolated in the woods of Maine, our family chose this place located in a hamlet on Orrs Island. Situated on several coves, all of them stunningly beautiful, we found the house to be peaceful and quiet. The cove is about 100 yards away and there are ocean views from the house. My younger kids went swimming and exploring the cove at least twice a day. Popham beach is about 40 minutes away and makes for a good day trip. As my wife and I like to run in the early mornings, the hilly terrain on Orrs Island provided a good challenge. It did mean running on the main road but we found most locals willing to drive around us during the run. Biking was also challenging but fun. Less than a mile away is H2O where we rented kayaks (paddle boards also available). There are numerous lobster shacks around and a couple of general stores for emergency supplies. As we were on the coast, the nights were cool enough to sleep with the windows open and avoid turning on the AC. Day trips to Brunswick, Bath and Freeport also provided distractions from the quiet although we preferred to stay locally and read books. The house is surprisingly well-equipped with a variety of literature to appeal to all tastes. As for the house, the kitchen and dining area are very functional (great gas stove!) and having brought our own coffee maker (Bialetti) and milk frother, we began each day with a cappucino while viewing the ocean. Although the showers could do with a little more water pressure, the washer/dryer combo worked very well for our daily washing needs. Our host Peter met us upon arrival and offered many helpful suggestions but stayed out of the way so we could simply enjoy the house and its wonderful setting. With five people using the internet every morning (regrettably) we found the wifi to be excellent - even stronger than our own back in suburbia. We have found Maine and this house so charming that we are quite sure to be back in the near future.
We had a wonderful stay at toad hall with my parents and four boys (10, 7, 5 & 1)! The bed arrangements were perfect for our family. Peter was a wonderful host. The house was central to all restaurants and surrounding islands. There was a short walk across lawns to a small beach that we went to several times a day to hunt hermit crabs and collect sea glass and shells. Our only regret is we couldn't stay longer!
We had a great time at toad hall with our 4 boys (ages 10, 7, 5, and 1) and my parents. The house had everything we needed for a perfect stay. Peter was a great host. The location was exactly what we wanted - great front porch, central to town and just a short walk down to a small beach area. The boys hunted hermit crabs, shells and beach glass. We even had our family portrait taken here we loved the location so much! I highly recommend toad hall!
I enjoyed my stay in Cottage Aerie so much this summer that I came back to stay at the Ship Captain's Home, owned by the same family. I thoroughly enjoyed my two and a half weeks here as well and would highly recommend it as a perfect place for writers. I was here in early September when it was quieter on the island than in the summer. Every morning I would write and then go out for seafood, either at Morse's Cribstone Grill, Estes Lobster House or Cooke's Restaurant. Sometimes I brought hard copies of my writing to Morse's and did revisions on the dock in the afternoon sun. It was great! I also recommend buying great seafood at Allen's Seafood for cooking at home. I found the Captain's house to be well maintained and outfitted for cooking. Once again, Peter, the owner was a great host and always available for recommendations.
Our family loved our stay at Toad Hall. It is bright, cheerful and colorful, and very comfortable, with spaces for different ages to enjoy different levels of activity. The children (ages 10 to 15) could play in the yard, fish in the cove, or huddle over their books or iPhones indoors, although they found plenty else to do. The adults could enjoy the activity from the comfortable porch or join in the games. We especially appreciated the spacious and thoroughly equipped kitchen, so we could all pitch in with the cooking and clean-up, and having all the supplies and staples for cooking as well as cleaning already on hand. The first floor walk-in shower helped keep sandy feet from tracking in on the beautiful original floorboards. We’ve been coming to Orr’s for years, so we know many of the good places, but this year discovered yet another new hike and picnic spot: the Devil’s Back Trail, just off the road at the northern end of the Island. Special food favorites, after lobster, of course, include Cote’s Ice Cream in Brunswick and The Cabin just across the street from the Bath Iron Works for pizza after our late afternoon, low-tide beach walk at Fort Popham.
Toadhall was beautiful and extremely comfortable. Six of us, including two children, stayed there, and the house was well-maintained, spacious, and very well-equipped. The kitchen even had a lobster pot, in case we wanted to cook our own.
We enjoyed being able to stay at a house with a wonderful view of Lowell Cove, and we walked down to the beach every day with our dog, who had her best vacation ever. The house was an easy drive to some wonderful restaurants, and also to Brunswick, Freeport, and Portland.
A friendly, gracious, and accommodating host, Peter gave us lots of information about Orr's Island beaches and restaurants, and also responded quickly when we had questions. He also pointed us to where we could rent kayaks, so two of us had a first sea kayaking lesson, which was super.
The week was incredibly relaxing, in no small part due to Peter's efforts to provide everything we would need in a setting that was absolutely beautiful. Sad to leave, we hope we'll be able to return next year.
