Aqui o tempo ea natureza mudar para um ritmo maior. We stayed at the Gateway house for 3 nights. We'd been to Maui a few times prior and had always stayed in Kihei, but I wanted to explore Hana on this trip. I'm so glad we chose to stay here. Though we had never met, Sybil and Tracy make you feel as though you are staying with old friends. The cottage is in such a beautiful setting, just a few steps away you have a perfect view to watch the sunrise in the morning. Lots of beautiful beaches and lovely hikes. We were able to enjoy all the places we missed when we drove the road to Hana 11 years ago. I have been telling everyone about this place since we returned home. It was so relaxing to get away from the chaos that is South Maui, I would love to stay here again sometime.
My husband and I spent 2 nights here. The owner cares very much for the property and you can see all the efforts she has put into it making it quaint and it's in a beautiful tropical location too. However the reason for the one star is that the unit itself smelled strongly of mildew, to the point where our eyes were red and we were sneezing a lot. We stayed out of the unit as much as we possibly could. I found black mold in the closets. The curtains, the mattress, pillows etc anything that can smell of mildew here did except for the towels which we ended up folding so we would use them as pillows so we would be able to sleep. It could however be fixed with replacing items that are too mildewy and then installing a humidifier. If this was done, it would be a totally amazing place, but until then we won't be back.
My wife and I spent two very enjoyable nights in the Gate House. The kitchen was well stocked, the beds comfortable and the shower/tub relaxing. The sites and beaches of Hana were a short drive away and the rural setting just right for a getaway. The few minor issues we had were delt with by Sybil and Tracy immediatly. We will definitly stay at Sybil's retreat again.
Our Dec. 4 weekend started early with a rustic drive through the "back way" of Kaupo, where my aunt's ashes were laid to rest on the very 'aina that nurtured her and her siblings through childhood. After an emotional day of reminiscing and catching up with relatives, we were relieved and intrigued to finally arrive at Sybil's island cottage, tucked away in the lush Hana foliage. She was such a gracious hostess, introducing us to the facility and even providing some delicious banana bread to sweeten our stay. My three grown daughters, my infant grandson, and I were very comfortable, impressed with the cleanliness and convenience of everything inside. The kitchen amenities, the spacious bath (our cricket & birdsong "spa"), and the open living area -- all contributed to a relaxing retreat! (Though perhaps a draw curtain on the door window b/n bathroom & bath-house might offer more privacy for non-family individuals :).) It was wonderful to be surrounded by Nature. One morning we even enjoyed a little adventure hike down to Venus Pool, right across the street, through the pasture, down to the cliffside. The cottage was so convenient, not too far from Hana town and Hana Bay, where we celebrated another aunt's birthday the next day. Memories are made of this.
Our family just spent two nights at this house and would certainly recommend it to anyone. It is suited for up to five people and the location outside Hana is superb for touring the area. As others have said Sybil is a joy to meet and gracious in offering various fruits that exist on the property. Be ready to coexist with a few lizards and maybe a couple of ants but remember you are in a tropical environment.
While the cottage is in a pretty little spot and fairly comfortable, I don't consider this luxury. The amenities were very basic. I couldn't find any salt, and a call to Sybil was never answered. The screen doors were not easy to close and had gaps where mosquitoes could (and did) get in. I never found the hair dryer. The outdoor shower i& tub were a little hard to climb into and not for those who want privacy. The only fruit I saw was a single pineapple and some guavas. The light in the main dining/living area was dim it was hard to see the jigsaw puzzle we tried to do. There was only one operable light in the bedroom. This place could be a little paradise with these items addressed. We stayed 4 nights, one too many given the lack places to eat at night and the drive to the small town. Otherwise, Hana is beautiful, the beaches were lovely, and we did like the Venus pools across the street - the water was flowing pretty heavily and we could not go in though.
