SK Vacation Rental offers you simple elegance, convenience and comfort--and did we mention the awesome view of Kealekekua Bay?! Experience life on a working mac nut farm (yum!) in the beautiful rural ambience of South Kona. Awaken to the dawn chorus of myriad birds, and fall asleep to the gentle pattter of Kona's famous misty rain (where all that green comes from!).
Your hosts Brad and Meris will do everything they can to make you comfortable. (And Brad can give you a lot of inside information on the history and sociology of South Kona). Co-hosts Blackie and Kai will be your best friends if you bring them the occasional biscuit.
While in South Kona be sure to: (1) visit Pu'uhonua O Honaunau (Place of Refuge) and snorkel at Two-Step (Honaunau Beach), (2) rent a Kayak from Ehu & Kai's on the bay (follow the signs) and paddle to the Capt. Cook monument where you can beach the boat and snorkel (and if you are lucky, the dolphins will come swim with YOU), and (3) have a down-home Hawaiian-style dinner at the Manago Hotel (we recommend the famous pork chops).
Each day of our stay was bookended by sipping coffee enjoying the view and eating dinner watching the sunset. We appreciated being able to squeeze oranges picked from the front yard and the screened living room's protection from elements and bugs - yet outdoor feeling. My snorkel broke so it was great not to have to drive to town and get another because there were an assortment of masks and snorkels provided. We used the cooler each day too:) The tour of the macadamia nut processing was fascinating; it made us especially appreciate the sample Meris shared. Best macadamia nuts we've ever tasted!
Renters should be aware this a working farm with environmentally conscious practices. Hot water is solar heated so conservation is appreciated. Compost bucket for food scraps is provided. Care to clean or remove sandy shoes before entering is important to protect parquet floor in sleeping area. Brad and Meris have two dogs. Though we did not actually see them, we did hear one bark a few times at night. Geckos kept us company in the kitchen area. The steep driveway and somewhat uneven walk to the front door might be challenging for some. These details were fine for us but might surprise someone expecting a more generic vacation experience.
If we had not been so busy exploring it would have been interesting to talk more with Brad and Meris, they were available should any question/need arise.
Great people that have a great place to relax and unwind! You wake up to bird singing! The driveway is a bit steep so I wouldn't take a sports car up there, but staying there is very worth it if you don't want to be in the hustle bustle of the city! You're only about 25 minutes from Kona. I definitely recommend staying here!!
Meris and Brad were wonderful hosts of a most unique vacation rental, where my husband and I stayed 5 nights. It was really nice to be away from the congestion of Kona yet nothing was that far away. From the front room a beautiful view of the coast includes sunset into the ocean and sunrise over the mountain. The screened-in kitchen and dining has the feel of lanai, so we could totally enjoy the outdoors in a protected way. Lots of birds around. Outside canvas shades can be let down if, for example, it got very windy. We had a few deluge-like rain storms and were completely protected without the shades. It was great! The bed and bath close off to get cozy. It felt very roomy for the two of us. We like to cook simple meals and the kitchen has everything you could possibly want. The place was completely immaculate and the farm is very tidy and picturesque. Meris packaged up and sold me some Mac nuts to bring home to friends. This was just about our favorite rental.
I stayed with Meris and Brad the beginning of December for 5 nights as a single woman. The rental is private, quiet, safe, comfortable and very scenic. Walking in and seeing it for the first time I felt I was at home. It is on their Macadamia Nut farm and attached to their house. The land slopes towards the ocean and affords great views of the coastline and sunset. It is located at the top of Captain Cook cove and has easy access to any activity available there. Grocery shopping is close as well as restaurants. I used the rental as a base to hike and bird the rest of the island and the location worked out well for me. The queen sized bed was very comfortable and the kitchen suited all my needs. There are books available for birding, snorkeling, attractions, and the history of the Hawaiian Islands. I had chats with Meris and enjoyed her very much, she is a wonderful human being. She gave me some insights of living on the Big Island, the pidgin language, birds, and of course the wonderful Macadamia Nut trees. I will return!
