Fantastic property in a great off the beat location on the waterfront. The owners have thought of everything to make your stay wonderful. Loved the home feeling with all the personal touches. Harlan was great and the lobster he dropped off for us on our dock were great. Memorable experience. Very easy to work with owner.
Yellow Dog Cottage was a delight with lovely views of the water, nice neighbors and everything you would want
for a vacation. The cottage was very roomy, certainly big enough for a family but perfect for a couple as well.
The village of Waldoboro was a short drive away and had a large grocery store stocking anything you might need.
A smaller "mom and pop" type store was closer where you could buy made to order sandwiches for taking on a picnic as we did to Mt. Battie near Camden.
Nearby Camden and Rockland are filled with many shops with irresistible gifts (who doesn't need a driftwood whale) and gourmet restaurants as well as other friendly eateries. For those wanting to experience island life, you'll find ferries to take you to nearby (and not so nearby) islands. A trip north to Union and Owl's Head finds you at several local wineries certainly worth a visit. We sampled a variety of local wines and met some of the nicest winery owners. In talking with one, we realized that she was visiting a friend in our small Vermont home town that coming weekend -- talk about a small world!
A review would not be complete without mentioning the beauty of Maine. From sitting on the Adirondack chairs at Yellow Dog watching friendly Harland the local lobsterman bring in his daily catch to driving along the coast and seeing such magnificent scenery, the mid-coast area of Maine cannot be beat!
We loved staying at Yellow Dog Cottage and are sure that you will as well.
My wife and I really enjoyed this location - it is relaxed, with adjacent properties widely spaced and nearly obscured by the wooded surroundings. It is not a "touristy" area, and after talking to the caretaker, Harlan, it appears that rental properties are in the minority which helps to give the area a "home on the water" feel.
The cottage is well-kept and we didn't experience any difficulties with the water supply or noise from the working Lobstermen. Harlan, the Caretaker, was very helpful and friendly, and having him deliver live lobster right to the dock is great.
Access to the water is easy, with the floating dock and also a naturally sloping "boat ramp" that allowed us to easily launch our solo canoes no matter what the tide level was. This was the first time we've paddled on tidal water - we found the conditions similar to an inland lake; wind driven waves, but no crashing surf like we've seen on the coast. The tide made the paddling experience different every time we went out which kept it interesting. Levels were changing 10-11 feet twice a day, but the current was only obvious in certain areas with narrows between the rocky islands.
Despite being located away from the tourist locations, they are still within a reasonable drive. Waldoboro is 10 minutes away for groceries and local dining. Popular restaurants, shops, lighthouses, the coast, boat tours, etc. are all within a 20-50 minute radius.
Ultimately, this location allowed us access to a variety of great experiences; Fresh lobster at the cottage, hiking at Camden Hills, canoeing/kayaking right from the cottage, biking in the Augusta region, lighthouse and coastal visits, dining in Damariscotta, etc.
Overall, we were very happy with the Yellowdog Cottage and would return without any hesitation.
We had a wonderful time at the yellow dog cottage. Everything was in great shape. And we appreciated the work done on the cottage since our last visit. Also want to compliment the owners arrangements with the caretakers. They couldn't be nicer and they are nearby.
With much appreciation and gratitude.
This was the 7th time we have rented properties in Maine & Nova Scotia through VRBO, and I have to say this was the "best yet" ! Beautiful setting, easy access, well kept property, and just the kind of place to relax, eat lobster and enjoy life. Having a lobster man just down the road who will drop off lobsters on your dock everyday, if you request, is a ++++ ! The "Adirondack Chairs" down by the water are perfect for enjoying wine, beer, "Bloody Mary's" or what ever your heart desires !!!
Quiet - peaceful - wonderful place. Someone else said when you arrive the stress just drops away. It's wonderful to sit in the chairs and watch the lobster boats (usually that's Harlan!) and the birds doing crazy things. Even our dog mellowed out after a couple days. The area is very pretty, and although Waldoboro is a little sleepy, Camden and Damariscotta are close.
The property is a great spot to launch and paddle. We did several trips up and down river and found our own special places on some of the islands and inlets. There's a nice little rapids to shoot in the middle of the river nearby, lots of shells, rocks, and pretty sights. The boat traffic is very low, never an issue.
You do end up meeting Harlan and his wife (she walks their dog down the road), but he's an authentic Mainer - very hospitable with with lots of great tales to tell.
Nice place for family and the dog.
