To say that this little cottage is charming, welcoming, and perfectly placed in the quiet heart of Margaree would be an understatement. My brother and I had the privilege of spending a week here this past summer, and I can honestly say I have never had a more enjoyable, more perfect vacation experience. The cottage itself, tucked away on a quiet hilltop, exceeded our expectations. It was warm and inviting - giving us a sense of home despite our being 3,000 miles away. The upstairs loft provided the perfect place for restful, peaceful nights beneath the stars, and cozy naps during the day. I love to cook, and the kitchen proved to be more than up to the task of a little Texas cooking. It's obvious that the owners, Stewart and Bell, have made it a priority to maintain this property, and I have to say, they do a brilliant job of it. In addition, I say with great certainty that you will not find two more gracious, more welcoming, and more kind hosts than Stewart and Bell. Stewart made it a point to welcome us, and make us feel at home. He was incredibly understanding and accommodating - two features that were an absolute blessing. I highly recommend that you let him walk you through the map of the island. After listening to live music and eating excellent food at the Red Shoe Pub, or grabbing lunch and a pastry at the local Dancing Goat, you won't regret this decision at all! For those wishing for a little quiet and relaxation, the true gem of staying at Chimney Corner is the beautiful beach located just down the road. My brother and I spent every day down on the quiet stretch of sand in our little cove. It's a short two minute drive to the entrance, or in my brother's case, the perfect end point on the return from his morning run. You'll love the cool, crystal clear water, climbing the rocks up the hill, and the abundance of crustaceans you'll find scurrying along the ocean floor. If I haven't expressed my enjoyment enough at this point, allow me to say this - You won't find a sweeter, more intimate and peaceful vacation spot than this. An absolute gem in the heart of Margaree Harbor, and perhaps one of my favorite places on earth. Once you walk up to the top of that hill and overlook the ocean below, you'll realize this place is worth every penny. And if you listen hard enough, you might just hear Stewart at the top of that same hill saying, "Welcome home."
My husband and I truly enjoyed our week stay in the Sea Sky cottage. The sunsets, location and views were magnificent. The house was great. We had all the amenities that we could need. The space was very comfortable. The radiant heat on the bathroom floor made stepping out of the shower very comfortable. Standing at the kitchen sink, looking out at the ocean and the beach was spectacular.
Stewart and Bell have made their cottage very comfortable and homey for their guest by providing linens, kitchen utensils, beach chairs and basic necessities of food prep.
Stewart provided us with a wonderful review of the area. He sat with us, for upon our arrival, to show us the great features of the area. He had maps and information that helped us enjoy the whole area for the week. We travelled from Judique, Marbou, Cheticamp and through the Cabot Trail to enjoy all the beauty Cape Breton has to offer. The Chimney Corner beach was just perfect. We sat on the beach in our chairs and thoroughly enjoyed the view, the water and the peacefulness. We enjoyed the Celtic music and the friendliness of people of the Island throughout the week.
We have shared with our family and friends the wonderful location of the Sea Sky cottage and how enjoyable and relaxing our stay was in Cape Breton. We hope to visit again. The cottage and location beckon us to return!
My husband and I didn't know where we wanted to go for vacation this fall, but when I found Stewart and Bell's cottages on the internet, I knew this was where I wanted to go. After reading reviews of the area
(i.e. fishing), my husband was on board also. Booking with Stewart was a breeze. The cottage was just as I hoped...and the view was phenomenal. The first morning I saw a fox scamper across the meadow, and my husband loved watching the bald eagles across the cove. Stewart's introduction to the island and the Margaree area made our time much more enjoyable because he told us about things we were interested in...and we may have missed them with out his input. We were also impressed with the friendliness of the "islanders"...they always asked us if we were going to come back. We certainly hope to...and want to stay in every one of Stewart and Bell's cottages.
We arrived at night and settled into our cottage. Our host Stewart, left us a note welcoming us and had Willie Nelson playing on the stereo. The warmth of the wood and soft lighting made us immediately feel at home and we agreed the next 7 days were going to be special.
In the morning we were astonished by the perspective of the wide endless horizon. The eastern sunrise and strategically placed westward facing wall of windows allows you to see the Gulf of St. Lawrence at first light and more impressively at sunset. Everyday we saw Eagles flying along the coast or perched on the rocks above the beach in sight. Bring binoculars!
Stewart makes a point to meet each and every guest and offer the history of his property and give general (and much appreciated) advice on your stay there.
We love to explore, so our days were mostly spent crisscrossing the Island by car, but every afternoon we made a point to return and revel in the beauty of the sunset on the deck (with wine!). The property is well maintained and privacy is respected throughout your stay, though we thoroughly enjoyed our chance meetings with Stewart and his dog.
If you want to get the full experience and really understand what life is like here I recommend you take Stewart's advice on the places to go and things to see. We were able to see much of the island, but made a point of leaving several things untouched for our future returns.
Cape Breton Island is a place that captures your soul and invites you to stay, slow down, and recognize what's missing in our fast paced, virtual lives. We highly recommend you stay here or at any of their cottages on the property and settle in, make yourself at home, and enjoy the Island the way you should. The property is breathtaking and you won't regret the experience.
I am convinced that Stewart's little cottage Cape Breton is the most beautiful and picturesque place that I've ever been. It is seriously even better than the pictures. Stewart was a caring and gracious host and showed us all the best places on the island to go to. But it really didn't matter whether we were going to see traditional Cape Breton music, eating out at a local pub, or staying in with a glass of wine, everything was absolutely perfect. I could not get enough of looking out of the cabin on all sides and seeing the ocean waves. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a beautiful getaway, but I'd just ask to please not book it when I'm planning to return, because it will definitely be soon.
This was our second trip here. We came here first two years ago for a week and loved it so much we returned for two weeks this time -- and it still went by two quickly! It’s simply a wonderful place to completely unwind and relax. The cottage itself is truly special. Very simple, but comfortable, with an expansive deck and spectacular water views. It really is even more beautiful than the pictures. In fact, the cottage was so comfortable that on any given day we had trouble getting ourselves out to get to the beach or take advantage of the numerous near-by attractions; we were just to relaxed to bother leaving.
Stewart and Belle are very accommodating hosts who truly want to ensure their gusts are happy. They are very familiar with the area and seem to know the details of every attraction in Cape Breton. I would highly recommend the cottage to anyone wanting to get away and just relax in a beautiful setting. I hope we will be back again.
