We arrived in the Old Fort area on a very warm Saturday morning. Started to reconsider going to North Carolina mid summer, glad we came. The mountain home was AMAZING! It was definitely cooler up top. The house was spotless with more amenities than mentioned in the HomeAway website. In fact, there was nothing lacking for what we were cooking or during leisure.
The house was already cooled when we arrived. The view from the deck was beautiful whether it was sunrise, watching a storm go across the valley below, or watch the sunset! There was the cutest nook off the spare room with a lovely stone wall and gnome watching your every move. The landscaping of this area was extremely inviting. The decks had plenty of space with outdoor furniture for lounging or dining. We used the gas grill hard and had a much better view than any restaurant in the area.
Places we enjoyed while there: Of course we loved the relaxed atmosphere at Phil's Bar-B-Que Pit. We did a Paddle board tour in Asheville area of the French Broad River. This was booked with Kyle of Mauii SUP (stand up paddleboarding). Kyle was amazing with his patience for helping us succeed. And the Biltmore Mansion is well worth going to. Go early as the crowd assembles early and there is a lot to see. The gardens rival our local Longwood Gardens. The Blue Ridge Parkway was also amazing. We went to Little Switzerland for a lovely dinner overseeing the valley below. All in all it was a fairly central location for all that we chose to do.
Lynne made sure we had detailed instructions for everything from locating the home to how to manage everything in the home. We could not have asked for anything more!
We arrived at night in the pouring rain, so Lynne's clear directions were a big help! The cabin is easy to find (which is not always the case in this part of the world), and very well-equipped and comfortable. Everything works, and you will have everything you need in the kitchen, whether you are cooking an actual meal or just heating up a frozen pizza. I even baked a little cake! There are clear directions for using the TV, Internet, and DVD player, there are plenty of sheets, towels, soaps, etc., and there is a nice selection of movies.
The view is spectacular from inside or outside the cabin. I think my favorite thing about our stay in the cabin was watching the sky from the living room. The view changes with the time of day and with the weather, and it was fascinating and uplifting to just sit and watch the mountains. We enjoyed our hikes around the Gateway property, and I even saw a bear one day!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful home and making our stay so comfortable. We had everything we could need and enjoyed sitting out on the deck watching the clouds change over the mountains. The sound system is great and the outdoor speakers really created a wonderful experience. We were able to use the Bluetooth to listen to our own tunes, but we wished we had brought a few Cd's with us as well. The beds were comfortable with soft linens and the kitchen was open and spacious enough for my husband and I to prepare breakfast together. The family room downstairs was perfect for DVD watching at night (we brought some of our own, but the selection provided has many award winners).
The location was very private and the drive up to the house was beautiful. The roads up the mountain are winding, but my hubby is used to turning on mountain roads being from Utah. We stopped at the grocery in Black Mountain on our way, so that made it easy not to have to go back down once we settled in. We visited the Biltmore, Asheville, Black Mountain and Chimney Rock. We also enjoyed the trails to Catawba Falls with the swimming hole and the falls we could play in. Thanks again for a wonderful stay and easy to follow instructions for your rental!
My husband and I spent five nights at this peaceful mountain retreat to refresh and renew our spirits and watch spring unfold before our eyes from the stunning vistas out the front windows of this house! Lynne (the owner) emailed us several times in advance to make sure we had everything we needed to access her home in this gated nature preserve. The winding (paved) roads led us upward and upward until we almost reached the pinnacle of the mountain where her home is nestled into its side. Only one home is visible from this mountain home although there are others nearby and many within the community itself. Driving to the Standing Rock Waterfall within the preserve we saw two deer, ten wild turkeys, and a river otter! The waterfall is a must-see and if you have time, take a picnic lunch there. You will find all the comforts of home in the house itself. There are a variety of DVD's to watch on the large family room television downstairs, and the upper living area is equipped with surround-sound speakers that extend to the front deck. (I think we blasted the mountains with some of our music until we discovered that there were speakers on the deck as well!) If you are looking for upscale furnishings, this is not the place for you; it is decorated with a "be comfortable and make yourself at home" flair. If you are looking for an upscale view of the mountains and surrounding nature, this is it!
We visited Mt. Mitchell for the views and some hiking. We took the northern entrance into the Blue Ridge Parkway by going further east on I-40 and getting off in Marion. The drive was beautifully scenic, taking us through winding roads and past glorious forests and one lake, but it was well over an hour getting there. Chimney Rock Village has some quaint stores, but when we were there, the elevator to the top of Chimney Rock was broken and they were awaiting parts to repair it. (It's 500 steps to the top.) We loved Black Mountain Village with its unique shops and restaurants. We recommend Blue Mountain Biscuit Company (9 oz. biscuits!) and the Black Mountain Bistro (delicious food, reasonably priced). In Asheville, we loved the Tupelo Honey Cafe and a top-rated local favorite, the Sunny Pointe Cafe. Don't discredit the Black Mountain grocery chain, Ingles, for your lunch or supper. On several occasions, we bought food from the Ingles deli and carried it back up the mountain to the house for our supper.
We can't wait to go back!

We had a wonderful time while staying at Mountain Laurel. The property has spectacular views and was very comfortable. We spent most of our time during the day hiking and sight seeing so coming home to the house and enjoying a fire in the wood stove made for the perfect end to our days.
We only noticed 2 items that probably need attention. The dishes placed on the top shelf of the dishwasher did not get clean. Also, the coffee maker is probably on it's last legs. Other than those minor issues, our vacation was spectacular and we would highly recommend your Mountain Laurel home!
After a somewhat "rocky" start, I took a wrong turn at Christmas Tree Ln, we arrived at the cabin. The area is isolated but very beautiful. The view from the deck is inspiring. The cabin is exquisite. It's like staying in a townhome. Living room, kitchen, master bed and bath up, second bed, family room, bath down. Pictures adequately depict cabin but really don't do it justice. We really enjoyed ourselves. Lynn , sorry about the initial call of panic but unlike your road, Christmas Tree put the fear of God in us, especially trying to make a u-turn. Thanks again for the rental and your patience.
