I searched far and wide for a house to act as the centerpiece of a feature film I planned to shoot in the fall of 2014 called, "We Only Know So Much." The multigenerational family dramedy required a big beautiful house with lots of history but I soon found that most of the large homes on the East End have been renovated into a generic, aspirational, designer blandness. And then I found Matthew and Barbara's gem on Ocean Road. The house is dripping with timeless charm and beautiful historic detail. From the giant old apple tree on the sprawling grounds to the wide plank wood floors and sunny kitchen with the long white table, the place offered classic beauty everywhere the camera was pointed. If you want to experience the traditional Hamptons of the old guard, with a few necessary modern conveniences, just a few hundred yards from the ocean, this is where you want to be. You can see for yourself when the movie is released in 2015.
What a lovely place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life! My girlfriend and I stayed the week of Memorial Day and it could not have been lovelier. We ate on the patio most nights, and while we couldn't get into the pool because of the cooler weather and the even cooler temperature of the water, we enjoyed sitting by it and dining next to it during the evening. The house is spotless and full of charm, but keep in mind it *is* an older beach house so if you're looking for sleek stainless steel appliances and hi-def flatscreen TV's, this is not the place for you. (The photos do not do it justice as you can't tell how comfortable the couches are by pictures alone!) If you're looking for a home close to the beach to relax and sink into, a secluded place where to BBQ and play frisbee outside and a wonderful and attentive owner to rent from, this is the place for you!
Elmhurst was even nicer than the description and photos! Thank you, Matthew, for a lovely experience. Our family from children to grandchildren loved the house and grounds. It felt like home. We will certainly consider returning next year even though we presumably won't have another wedding to attend as an excuse!
I stayed in this home in July 2012 with my family, inluding my parents. I will start with the positives. The home was in a good location, 0.6 miles from the beach and 1.5 miles from town. The house is a good size and can fit 11 people comfortably, the pool area is nice as is the BBQ. The owner was kind and pleasant to deal with.
The photos are relatively accurate however the home has not been updated one bit since the 1960s. And when I say nothing, I mean NOTHING (except 1 bathroom and I will get to that later). The refrigerator, dishwasher and stove are 40+ years old, the TVs (few of them in the first place) are all tube and poor quality. The wireless internet worked in 1 room of the whole home, and did not work well. The house has individual window A/C units (and are not even in all the rooms of the house) so not only is the kitchen and one living space quite warm, but they are LOUD. It inhibited our ability to sleep at night, hear each other while talking etc.
Lastly, there was a situation with the bathroom that left a bad taste in my mouth. I was there with a total of 6 adults plus a child (well below the capacity of 11 people). One shower was broken (and was the only decently nice bathroom in the whole house),and a second bathroom was so rusty/old you needed a tetanus shot to use it. The other upstairs bathroom was a tub with a "hand held" shower. It was literally a leaky rubber tube that did not stay attached to the faucet (so was unusable) and the pipes where you change the temperature were so hot I nearly burned myself. The last bathroom was in the master bedroom and was old, but clean. The owner said he would compensate us for the lack of the one usable bathroom (we all used a since shower the whole time as 6 adults) and what he suggested was minimal. We said we thought the amount was not enough, so he ended up sending up $100 more, which is a spit in the face given the price of the rental and the inconvenience of 6 adults using one shower.
Overall, this house is quaint but in serious need of some updating. For the price, I would definitely NOT recommend "Elmhurst".
This house oozes charm. It has a lot of original details which make it really comfortable and beachy. The yard is enormous and the pool is amazing. The location can not be beat - 1/2 mile from the beach is an easy walk, though there are parking spots by the beach. 1.5 mile drive to Bridgehampton village, including great restaurants and Citarella as well as a conventional Supermarket and Rite Aid (and to pick up friends coming in on the Jitney). Best of all you can take a different road up to 27 depending on which end you are going to so you don't have to sit in the inevitable traffic THROUGH town, and you can take back roads for a decent bit through Sagaponack to avoid 27 and cut over to Sag Harbor. I don't know why you would stay any where else. Wine Tasting, Loaves and Fishes, quiet farm roads for running or biking, multiple farm stands and shops within a mile....I could go on and on. The house is VERY well-stocked with linens and beach and bath towels (not just enough for each bed and person, but a huge closet full). My mother, ever the planner, brought things like toilet paper, aluminum foil, basic spices...none of them were even unpacked, everything was there. I'm getting long-winded here, but I must mention we had a baby there and it was so easy to have him there. The owner is polite, friendly and responsive.
I've stayed at Elmhurst several times, and it is absolutely lovely. Each room is beautifully appointed, with very comfortable bedrooms. You feel like you're very own bed and breakfast. We found the house to be meticulous and well care for. It's also a great house for the kids. The owners are always available to answer questions. It is just minutes from one of the nicest beaches in the Hamptons. And even if it's not a beach day, the house is so comfortable you'd hardly miss it. Elmhurst is set on a beautiful property that includes a beautiful pool and outdoor dining area. I highly recommend Elmhurst for a family vacation.
