Good mountain home

Excellent mountain ski home

We really enjoyed this home for our ski trip to Massanutten. It had plenty of room for the two families and kids who were with us. The views are great. It was fun for the kids to see the snow groomers and snow makers at night on the mountain. The furniture didn't exactly match the photos posted online but it looked like some of the furniture had been updated. The beds were plenty comfortable and we enjoyed having multiple king beds to use. The kitchen and great room was perfect to cook dinner and hang out after a day of skiing. And the kids hiked a bit in the trees behind the home, which was fun for them. It looked like the resort had a lot to do if we stayed longer. Maybe we will come back in the summer for a longer stay. We recommend the home.

Poorly Maintained and Dirty Rental

As a renter of this monstrosity I hesitated to review the rental until we received our deposit. That refund was given to us on Jan. 10th, quite conveniently after Christmas even though we rented the house around Thanksgiving. At one point I decided not to even write a review because it seemed that many guests had already touched on the "special" features of this home, but when the owner gave me a one star rating today as a guest...well you know the old saying about letting sleeping dogs lie. I would like to give a lengthy review of each room and its pitfall, but there are not enough characters allowed for that kind of review. All I can say is that in my 56 years of existence on this planet I have not stayed in a filthier house. It is run down, neglected, drains in the bathtubs are clogged and spew up mold and hair, there are mouse pellets in the kitchen cupboards, mouse pellets in the utensil container, layers of scum built up on the kitchen appliances and around the kitchen sink, ceiling is dripping with cob webs, clusters of insects hiding in corners, carpets filled with hair and chip crumbs, dents and holes in the walls, downstairs "great room" is a foyer, couches had to be covered due to so many disgusting stains, old moldy food under the couches, sheets and towels had to be washed before use (bedding had bodily fluids and towels stunk), sixth bedroom is part of another bedroom and the doors to close that section off STILL don't work, chairs in the kitchen are broken and/or tied together with string, stools at the counter are heavily stained, spindles on the upper outside deck are loose, bedroom windows without window coverings or shades, stove top was heavily stained and dirty, window sills and moldings are covered with dirt and dust. We called the property manager as requested by the owner, and the two times that we discussed the problems with the house he responded like an automated message. Really could have cared less. He sent over a housekeeper late at night on our first day of arrival, but at that point the house was filled with people and luggage so we told her to not bother as it would require us to move everything out, plus a cleaning on that massive of a scale would take days. We did take plenty of pictures as evidence of the home's neglect. By the time we left, the house was much cleaner than when it was given to us. I see nothing but excuses here from the owner, and expect to see them again. Renters beware.

Resposta do proprietário: I have tried to reach out to the author of this review. I spoke with the person who actually rented the home from me and he was very pleased with the home and indicated that others in his group were as well. I did receive some photos of the condition of the house and would gladly post them online as they show how well the home is maintained. Our 24/7 onsite manager has received rave reviews from other guests for being available to address issues large and small at virtually any time of day or night. For whatever reason, whatever concerns were raised, the author did not want them addressed. The home is well cleaned and we have updated many of the aspects of this home, including new chairs for the dining room table and new furniture such as couches upstairs and downstairs. Some of the other comments simply don't ring true at all, as no renter has ever complained about the showers, which are in excellent condition. We do have to reset the sliding doors at times, which can fall off the tracks. But that is an easy fix and usually only happens when a renter slams them too hard to close them. Overall, it is disappointing that none of these issues were raised to our attention so we could address them during the stay, and I have not been able to speak directly with this guest since she is not the person who actually rented from me. I don't know what her expectations were, but we have done our best to address any of the concerns that were raised for future guests.

Furniture broken up and dirty

We will not be going back. It is a big house but the furniture is very run down and broken. 2 of the 8 dining room chairs had rope tied around the legs to hold them together. Also, 2 of the showers would not turn on. I am not a plumber but it appeared the diverter's were broken. We made the best of our stay but overall we were let down with the overall condition of the home.

We have purchased new furniture for the home in February 2017, including new kitchen chairs, new bunkbeds, new couches and new games downstairs. We have checked the showers and confirmed that there is no problem with the showers working. We have had a diverter underneath the tub faucet but have changed that out so the diverter is even easier to use and there should no longer be any confusion. We strive to keep this home in good condition given the use it receives from larger parties. We also have an onsite manager available 24/7 to accommodate any needs that arise.

An Overall Good Time

My stay here was very pleasant. There was enough room for me and my 9 guest. The views were amazing. We were able to see the snow slopes from the deck. Lastly, the location of the house was perfect. One issue I notice was the house needed some maintenance repairs, such as the sliding door in the bunk-beds room and some of the furniture being broken. Other than a few patience repairs it was a nice place .

We do apologize for the bunk beds, which did break during your stay. We have installed new bed frames so there is no question for future renters. We are also working to install sturdier sliding doors into the bunk room bedroom so that there are no longer issues with those sliding doors. They clearly get a lot of use.

Not 6 bedrooms, not new, poorly maintained

After much discussion, we have decided to leave an honest review of this rental house. Unfortunately, the owner has communicated to us that he will not be refunding our security deposit because of our review and he threatened to sue us as well. Despite these threats, we felt that it was important that others are aware our experience. When we arrived at the house, we were surprised to learn that the "6th bedroom" in the house is actually a sliding door that divides one of the rooms into two areas. On one side of the divider are two sets of bunk beds with a king set on the other side. Because we had multiple couples and children, this created some challenges with our room planning.Plus, the doors were broken, so the divided room concept didn’t work. We just want others to know for their planning purposes.

Some of the previous reviews note various cleanliness issues, and we found that this was true for us. The place was dirty when we arrived. On the first night, we saw a mouse run across the kitchen floor and noticed mouse droppings (small black mouse pellets) in many places throughout the house, including bedroom, kitchen and living room floors, in and on the sofa, and in bathrooms. Additionally, some mouse droppings were found on cooking utensils, dishware, pots, and pans. We would leave during the day and come back to new mouse pellets on the kitchen counter and kitchen table. We have young kids and planned to have most meals in the house so this was troubling. We also found that towels were limited, and the ones available did not appear to be clean, as they smelled like they had not been washed. The place did not appear to have been maintained, including the patio furniture which was in disrepair. There were multiple light bulbs out, and some of the cookware was not usable because of its condition (broken or damaged). We found holes in walls as well.

We attempted to communicate these problems to the owner after the weekend. He offered to pay us $250 to avoid leaving a review, which we thoughtfully declined. We felt that it was important to communicate our experience, despite his offer. When we communicated this to him, he became irate and threatened to sue us for slander. We are a thoughtful, professional, and responsible group, and felt that it was important not to be intimidated by this owner. We will return next year to the area, but not this rental

Resposta do proprietário: Over the last 14 years, I have tried hard to have a positive experience for every renter in any of my homes--either during the rental or afterwards. This one stands out as a sole example to the contrary. The bottom line is there was apparently a mouse in the home (for just the second time in 10 years). We try hard to prevent that from happening and do pest control twice a year, but it is a mountain home which is part of the allure here. Our 24/7 onsite manager offered to come up and address the issue but the renters refused. What is particularly frustrating is how this renter responded. After the rental, he posted an even more negative review that he admitted was fabricated. He at least had the good sense to remove that review, even though I take serious issue with many of the facts as stated in this review as well. For example, his security deposit was fully refunded so that part is just not accurate at all. Given what he related as his experience, I offered him half of his rental night as a refund. He demanded a full refund, which I did not think was warranted given our attempt to accommodate him and the fact that he remained in the home. We have rarely needed to offer a refund of any kind, but a mouse in the home is an unfortunate experience. I guess some guests will never be satisfied and have a different sense of fairness. I have tried multiple times to follow up with this guest to attempt to make anything right, if that is possible. All to no avail. This home is 9 years old, as the listing notes. It is one of the newer homes at Massanutten and we keep the home updated. The sixth bedroom is a separate bedroom separated by a pocket door from one of the king master suites. Most guests love that convenience for sleeping kids separately, but near them. That pocket door can slide off track but is very easy to put back on the track. If there are any issues, our 24/7 property manager can easily handle that issue. There are also three king master suites and two queen beds for adults plus sleeping for an additional four people in the common areas. We also have a closet with plenty of additional lightbulbs, linens and towels for use if there are any concerns at the home. Plus, our manager will address any of those concerns if any guest will allow it.
