My husband and I were looking for a property that was close to both the Hilo area and the volcanoes so this seemed in the middle of both. I liked the fact that it wasn't commercial with lots of people and seemed private.
What a beautiful property and the owners were very nice to deal with in setting up the reservation. They sent plenty of information that we needed in advance of our arrival.
Once we got to the island and located Mika Lani (excellent directions, by the way !!!) , we were amazed to find a wonderful home full of amenities and right on the water. No loud surf, but just the gentle tidal pools that were loaded with fish. Snorkeling was AMAZING and my husband used 3 rolls of films shooting the coral and fish in his underwater camera.
We had breakfast on the front lanai every morning to the amazing views and the birds chirping and fish jumping. What a relaxing place. You will love the serenity here.
The facility is REALLY clean, down to the BBQ Grill, hottub, and washer and dryer. There is nothing that you will need that this home doesn't supply. There are snorkel masks, fins, kayaks, towels, a nice welcoming basket of goodies and even champagne. The kitchen is VERY well equipped! Everything was thought of by the gracious hosts.
We will come back to the islands at some point and we will stay at Mika Lani again. We highly recommend this vacation rental!
Don't hesitate to rent this spot. For the price, you'll have a wonderful spot that would be hard to beat.
We highly recommend Mika Lani!
When visiting the islands of Hawaii we love to go snorkeling but always find the logistics intimidating - packing all the gear, choosing a location close to good beaches, arriving before the crowds, gambling on the weather. Mika Lani is the perfect solution to all that. After arrival, the only remaining question is how many times you wish to snorkel each day. (Hint: Bring more than one swimming suit.)
Other reviewers have correctly described how well-equipped, convenient, and clean this property is. The owners obviously take pride in maintaining and upgrading everything - from the new washer/dryer to the new kayaks. The kitchen has everything you need.
But for us it was really all about the fish. In varying weather conditions, tide levels, and degrees of sunlight, we saw dozens of tropical fish we had not encountered before. One evening, we were surprised by a huge school of mullet repeatedly leaping clean out of the water. Fish in the tide pools are protected and they seem to know it. Game wardens patrol the area. Fortunately, the Suisan Fish Market in Hilo has a great selection of the eating variety and we grilled fresh fish practically every night on Mika Lani's Weber propane barbecue.
Also, the weather at Mika Lani seems several notches better than in Hilo or Pahoa. Often we would drive through torrential rains that would be replaced by sun breaks just a couple of miles before arriving at Mika Lani.
We hope to return soon, and would not hesitate to recommend this lovely spot to anyone (but may decide not to, for fear that the calendar will fill up too quickly...)
This pictures of this home does not do it justice.Beautiful home and the views from the deck cant be beat. The owners were great to work with,we had to change our arrival date back 2 days at last second due to a chance of a hurricane coming ashore the same day we were scheduled to arrive. They were very understanding and refunded us for the missed 2 days immediately.
The house comes equipped with everything you need for a fun filled vacation from kayaks to snorkel gear to bikes to ride around the neighborhood. The snorkeling was great and all the neighbors we met were very friendly and helpful with any questions we had with things to do on the Big Island.
We will not hesitate to stay here again when we come back to Hawaii.
For our honeymoon, my husband and I chose Mika Lani on the high recommendation of friends, and we were knocked out and enthralled by every aspect of our stay. Imagine you have been relieved of all your duties and responsibilities, imagine you have been invited to play deeply, relax thoroughly, connect to your beloved and to yourself, and in this dreamy, airy, perfect tiny villa, your wishes are all granted.
Far better than any hotel at a comparable rate, no detail has been left unattended by Sara & Jamie (whom we never met but who replied promptly to any email query), from the soft blue beach towels to the pristine, waiting Jacuzzi, from the array of masks, snorkels and fins to the pair of bikes with air in the tires; the kayaks are ready, the kitchen is immaculate and stocked with everything from champagne glasses (and, yes, champagne), folded dish towels, shish kebab skewers (there's an outdoor grill -- propane at the ready), and rice cooker to knife sharpener, wok and blender (for the essential morning smoothies of pineapple, banana and papaya and the evening rum drinks), the bathrooms shine with light and glass and mirror; a comfortable bed with good cotton sheets! Scrabble and cribbage boards! fish guidebooks! sunscreen and shampoo! wifi and a printer stocked with paper!
And that's just the house. The snorkeling a few steps out the door in the protected Kapaho Tide Pools is the best I've ever done. I wish I were a marine naturalist and could describe properly the magnificent and abundant species we encountered. And the invigorating, sheer joy of floating and swimming among them all! Experienced divers will be thrilled, and, if this is your first time snorkeling, you will find the set up incredibly inviting, made that much easier by all the supplies the house has.
We biked to the Champagne pools and drove to Volcano National Park, had dinner in Pahoa, went to the super friendly and crowded evening market in Kalapana, and took a spectacular drive up to Hawi, but the best thing of all was the snorkeling (we usually went out twice a day) and the peaceful, easy time at Mika Lani itself, sitting for endless hours on the lanai, reading, talking, watching the sea and the pools. Many, many thanks to Sara & Jamie.
Beautiful, immaculate vacation home. We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating our 39th anniversary at this home. All you need is food and drink. The extras, kayaks, bikes, snorkeling equipment and a perfect location were all provided. We plan to stay again. Thanks!
This was our second visit to Mika Lani and no less amazing than our first visit five years ago. This cozy home on the lagoon is literally steps from the Wapoho Tide Pool outside your door. The home is clean, outfitted with everything you need, and provides a great spot for either a stay-cation vacation or a base from which to see the Volcano and Hilo. On our first visit, we spent most of the days exploring the area, only to arrive home and wish we hadn't left Mika Lani's embrace. This time, we stocked up on groceries and just hung out every day doing 3 swims, a walk in the neighborhood, and lots of reading. We were concerned that a vacation in November on the east side of the island would be spent in showers everyday but the location of the house was in a sweet spot of wind and weather pattern. Yes, there were definitely showers everyday and once completely rainy day but it was still enjoyable. Although the closest restaurants are a 20 minute drive away in Pahoa, it is an easy drive. Plus, most do take-out so we occasionally went into town for some Thai take out and had a great sunset dinner on the lanai. Although the tide pools are a public access area, it is never overwhelmed with swimmers. They mostly come around high tide time frame and are certainly departed by sunset. We were there over Thanksgiving and had a large, local family next door but there wasn't excessive noise and it was a delight to see all the kids playing so easily in the water--what a great childhood memory for them. I've searched all the islands on VRBO and can tell you that this is a unique offering....on the water, large amount of privacy, great views, and at a reasonable price for this sort of property. Can't wait for our next visit!
