A lovely vacation gathering place with just the right touch of " Downeast Maine woodsy"!

  • 5 de 5

We were four women getting together to celebrate our 40 year friendship ( and a birthday) who spent an incredibly wonderful week at this great property. Because we had so much to catch up on with each other, we probably spent more hours at the house than most folks would while vacationing Downeast. This comfy home allowed us to be together while offering us individual private space at the same time. Mornings were spent drinking coffee on the sunny deck, while evenings were enjoyed relaxing in the screened porch. The kitchen was functional and provided all that we needed. The bedrooms were good sized with some storage available and everyone slept well. We found the bathroom to be a little challenging for four women to share due to limited space and storage but we applied more of a "dormitory" approach for the week with success. We loved the location of the house (take it slow on the driveway) and appreciated the availability of kayaks and bikes although we opted to not use them. We were inspired by the natural area this home sits within. From the deck we watched the rise and fall of the tide, listened to the wind in the trees, viewed a variety of birds and witnessed an American Bald Eagle in flight, twenty feet above our heads (twice)!

Time spent in the Schoodic Point part of Acadia National Park, on a Bar Harbor Ferry ride, riding in a horse drawn cart along the famous Carriage Roads in Bar Harbor, experiencing a "Tasting" at Bartlett Winery, picking wild blueberries at the Petite Manan Sanctuary, visiting the cats and dogs being cared for at The Ark Animal Shelter in Cherryfield, attending the Winter Harbor Lobster Festival and photo-op wandering through the local towns, discovering "the perfect picnic spot", and unexpected wildlife viewing (Mom & Baby deer feeding on apple trees, fox hunting in a field, eagles in tall pine trees and harbor porpoise during the ferry crossing.....) were our "To Do" options located close to the house, all easy day trips.

The owners of this property provide folks with a terrific home for a Maine vacation. I spoke directly with Joan on several occasions. She responded to my inquiries and requests in a timely and helpful manner. She truly wanted to provide a wonderful week for us in her vacation home. When I individually asked each of my travel companions if they would stay there again, the response was a unanimous "AYUH"!

So, consider this four 5 star reviews in one and know we'll be back again one day!

Decent and good for the price.

  • 3 de 5

I must first say that my wife and I really enjoyed our two week stay in Maine (first time being in Maine for us) and we overall liked the place. The cabin was clean and secluded. Away from people for the most part. There are neighbors on both sides that you can barely see through the trees but it is still very private. All the aplliances worked and there is basically everything you need there. We liked getting up in the morning and either going down to the bay with our coffee (have to watch the biting flies and mosquitos though) or sitting out on the screened in deck. There is no air conditioning and it can get pretty hot inside but we found that we could cool it off relatively well with the fans there.

The place is about an hour from some of your bigger areas. I recommed taking the time and going to mount desert island (Acadia park). As lovely as it is over there, the Schoodic Peninsula that this place is on is the best part of Acadia national park. 15 minutes away awaits a North Atlantic rocky shoreline that is amazing. Not very many people go there. My wife and I were sitting very close to the water watching the waves crash against the shore and we had a seal pop up and curiously stare at us for several minutes.

As for the cons. First, my wife and I were driving 15 hours to get here and we had some questions about checking in. My wife called the number that was provided and left and message and never got a call back. We figured eveything out but it didnt give us confidence that we had someone to contact if we needed.

There were also many spiders that we dealt with here. I live in the midwest and in the country so i can handle a couple spiders but I am talking about more than a couple. We killed 17 in the first 3 nights. With more after that. All of them the same kind of medium size, agresssive, black spiders. It was a battle we faced every night, them crawling by the bed, on our clothes, etc.

There was/is a yellow jacket nest under the deck which I unwillingly found out about one day while grilling. I was able dart in the house and let them calm down but someone allergic to bees could end up having a bad day.

People with cars that are kind of low should be careful with the driveway also.

For the price, it is a good place depending on what your looking for, willing to deal with, and your budget. Overall, you could probably do worse. For us, we would bump our budget up slightly next time.

Resposta do proprietário: We've eliminated the paper wasps living under the deck. The spiders are a mystery. Not an experience we've had or had reported before... We've been staying at the property for a week now and haven't seen anything other than a very small spider in a bathroom corner. The road is gravel and some large rainstorms have moved material around - no gullies, but a several rough patches are being addressed.

This is what a vacation should be!

  • 5 de 5

My family agrees that this was our best vacation ever and will be very difficult to top! The house was adorable, clean, and had everything that you would need.

We used the kayaks and life vests several times. None of us had kayaked before but found it easy to do from the rocks in front of the house. We also used the bikes/helmets a few times. We did not take the bikes to Acadia but instead just rode the quiet roads around the house. Our children especially enjoyed eating wild Maine blueberries from the side of the road on those bike rides!

We ate most of our meals at the house, taking Izak's suggestion to stop for groceries in Ellsworth on our way in. There are also a couple markets within 10 minutes of the house if you need more groceries during the week. If you do enjoy eating out, there are several options near the house. We also cooked lobster for the first time. That was a fun and delicious adventure for us!

We took the ferry from Winter Harbor to Bar Harbor for an afternoon of shopping. Bar Harbor was fun, but I was ready to get back to the peacefulness of our little house in Prospect Harbor. Our children absolutely loved the ferry ride (about 40 minutes).

We went to Trenton one evening for the Maine Lumberjack Show (another of Izak's suggestions) - fun show!

We loved Schoodic Point in Acadia (about 10 minutes away). The views were amazing, and our children loved climbing all over the rocks. We took a picnic lunch there one day. We also enjoyed a couple afternoons at Jones Pond. Don't let the name fool you - it is a large lake.

Other than our afternoon in Bar Harbor and our evening at the lumberjack show, we stayed very close to the house. We loved the rocks at the water, and our children often saw crabs, snails, and small fish there. We loved that everything we wanted to do was within minutes of the house, and there were no crowds/lines. Sometimes a vacation doesn't feel like much of a vacation. This one definitely did. It was very relaxing, and one of my favorite features of the house was the screened-in deck. There are lots of games, DVDs (for a range of ages), and books to keep you entertained when you are just relaxing inside the house. Also, the weather could not be beat. We enjoyed temperatures in the low to mid 70s the entire week, with only one morning of rain.

We would definitely like to come back to this house again sometime. I can't say enough about what a wonderful time we had there and the memories made.

Sweet cabin nestled in the woods

  • 3 de 5

We enjoyed this charming little cabin on the bay! The inside was so well kept and had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. Well stocked kitchen, comfortable bedrooms and a great book and movie selection for rainy days!

The bikes were wonderful and all but one of the kayaks was great. The third one needs attention......

The outside leading to the cabin and from the cabin to the bay was not quite as expected as it was very overgrown and had no usable yard space - the view of the bay is at risk because of overgrown trees. The driveway was also eroding and could be very hard on a smaller car.

However, the scent of the pine and sound of the birds was wonderful as I sat on the porch each morning! So thankful for each day in Maine!

Resposta do proprietário: We strive for five star reviews - and fell short this time... The area around the house is considered one Maine's most pristine, protected coastal habitats. It's a rare spot with few invasive species. The nearby marsh was the model for an exhibit at the Museum of Natural History until a decade ago. We've removed the reference to a garden/lawn as we'll never apply the chemicals necessary to maintain a lawn. Hopefully this moderates expectations. It's likely brush will be cut back to enhance the view in response to this review. We've had moose, eagles, and all sorts of critters on the property and while rare to spot, it's our goal to promote the native plants and trees that keep them happy and promote privacy.

June Vacation

  • 5 de 5

My family and I rented this house/cottage for an early vacation in June. Trying to find the house initially was a bit of a challenge because GPS takes you on paved roads. After finding the dirt road, that saved us a considerable amount of time getting off of the peninsula. The house was very charming with a nice screened in porch and very quiet with neighbors a bit far away. The driveway was a bit bumpy which is important to consider if you are taking a low clearance car/motorcycle. The house isn't far from the marsh bay with good views and great kayaking when the tide is in, be sure not to get caught at low tide as is stated with the rental. The marsh bay unfortunately isn't great for swimming or exploring past the rocky shoreline due to the mud being very soft at low tide. However, a sandy beach is less than 5-10 minutes from the rental. My son did most of the swimming because the water was very cold, I'd say 50-55 degrees. The weather was very nice for the entire trip and we did some exploring of Acadia National Park. A minor negative to be aware of is the amount of time it takes to get to Ellsworth and Acadia, approximately 60-90 minutes. This isn't so much a negative on the rental as it is more so on the HomeAway Map. The amount of area is distorted due to the peninsulas located along the coast. The home was very clean with fresh sheets, linens and towels on our arrival. They have plenty of DVDs and books to keep you interested while you are away. If you are concerned with cell coverage, there is very little which was not an issue for us but another thing to be aware of if you like being bothered on vacation. They have many of the essentials if you have younger children including a pack and play, high chair, and plenty of toys. The owners are great to work with and accommodating, security deposit was received a couple of weeks after but not an issue. My family enjoyed our vacation and all that the area had to offer, especially fresh lobster off the dock at the lobster co-op in Corea. We would certainly consider this property again and highly recommend it to others looking to stay in or on this peninsula. My family misses the peacefulness of the property already! Beautiful place and quite relaxing.

peaceful, beautiful, everything you need

  • 5 de 5

We had a wonderful time in this cozy, well-equiped cabin. Everything was great, from the Jotul stove to the deck and the fantastic location by the water. It is wonderful to kayak up into the Grand Marsh at high tide, and to enjoy biking around on the quiet roads. Izak was a gracious host. Highly recommended!
