La Petite Chouette is located towards the southern side of Domme, close to the Porte de la Combe: as such, this is a quieter part of this wonderful village yet only a short uphill walk to it's busting square and main attractions. With this cottage you can enjoy the best of both worlds, whether a quiet snooze/read/meal in your garden or to browse the shops, explore the labyrinth of streets or marvel at the views of the Dordogne from the bluffs of the Belvedere.
This property has a large master suite on the top floor and it felt indulgent to have a roll top bath as well as the super-king bed. On the middle floor is a second, smaller double bedroom, a large bathroom with shower and a fabulous sitting area with a full length door allowing both the sun to come in and you to see the garden, equally good to sit in on a balmy late afternoon or even a wet morning. Downstairs is one big room with kitchen, dining area and lounge although there is a separate handy utility room. What impresses is the quality and range of equipment - everything you need in the cooking and white goods arena along with Global knives, thick towels, a remote controlled electric fan (great gadget) and a TV you can actually watch (i.e with BBC TV channels) plus a quick wi-fi service. Lynn, the lucky owner, was friendly and easy to deal with.
The garden is across a narrow alley road but don't be put off, we never saw a car use it, and the garden itself has sun loungers, a dining area and a little coffee table and chairs, lights plus you can pick sun or shade. It is pretty private.
We loved this, our first stay here and our seventh overall in Domme. Thoroughly recommended.
Delightful week spent in this well appointed house in a very quiet corner of the beautiful bastide village of Domme. The house offered everything that we required including a private garden where we relaxed in the evenings after busy days sightseeing in the wonderful surrounding area. The house was beautifully decorated and furnished to a high standard with geraniums and hanging baskets framing the house. The owner Lynn was very helpful with all our enquiries and we would love to return to walk in the gorgeous countryside around.
La Chouette is a stone-built, old cottage in a quiet part of the historic walled 'Bastide' town of Domme, five minutes walk from the town square. The house is very well-equipped with new or good-as-new fittings, furnishings and equipment - nothing omitted and all spotlessly clean. The small (private) garden across the lane is a suntrap, ideal for relaxing and barbecuing. The first- floor sitting area gets full sun in the afternoon and is another good place to relax. In this ancient town with narrow one-way streets parking is bound to be tricky but there are two spaces immediately beside the property, and a permit for parking in the public areas. We were three - couple with adult daughter - and used Domme as the base for exploring the Dordogne, for which it is was absolutely ideal; Sarlat, Lascaux, Rocamadour and Bergerac are all within easy reach. So much to see and do. Would have no hesitation in renting La Chouette again if we were to return to the area.
What an amazing place! We loved it. We stayed for 8 nights in Oct and didn't want to leave- the facilities included everything we needed. With just two of us we could spread out- the middle floor became my dressing room, reading room and yoga studio! The large bathroom was one of the nicest we have seen in a vacation rental, and it was very convenient to have the small w/c on the top floor. We also made extensive use of the washer/dryer- very helpful when traveling from the US with luggage restrictions! At this time of year weather was variable so did not get to make use of the garden unfortunately.
We cooked at home several evenings, as it was off season some of the restaurants were closed (we definitely missed the pizza place) and agree that Auberge de Rode is a must do dinner out. Also highly recommend La Belle Etoile in La Roque Gageau and Cabanoix et Chataignes in Domme- although even in Oct we needed reservations at those. Saturday market in Sarlat is amazing. Climbing up to the castle in Beynac, the boat ride in La Roque, visiting Rocamadour, seeing prehistoric cave paintings, all were wonderful but the best was coming "home" to our temporary house in Domme.
One thing we definitely noted and appreciated was the quiet. Walking up to the main part of town was always interesting with the shops, tourists etc, and the views from the belvedere are magical. But at night, before bed, I'd open the door, look up the street, see no one and hear nothing. No people, TVs, radios, planes, electrical appliances, nothing. It truly felt like we were in medieval times. We slept late in the mornings as it was so quiet, nothing to wake us up except for the morning coffee, croissants and baguettes. Luckily, sightseeing in this area will work all that off- venturing through the medieval gate and down the hill to the artisan boulangerie , then back up, more than covered the calories in that chocolate croissant! I loved the walks around town, my husband enjoyed his runs through the woods and along the river.
Definitely recommend this- you won't go wrong. Great scenery, great food and wine, wonderful facilities, hospitable owner and helpful property manger, and gorgeous town all made for a fabulous vacation!
We had a really great time at Le Petite Chouette. Lynn (the owner) was extremely helpful throughout the booking process. The property is exactly as described in a wonderful location in the picturesque village of Domme. There is so much room throughout and it was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We ate out 3 nights and cooked in 3 - the kitchen equipment is as you would expect if you were at home. Pizzeria des Templiers offer extremely tasty pizza's - the best meal was at Auberge de la Rode
where we had a superb meal.
Places worth visiting are Sarlat market, Chateaux de Puymartin, Losse, Biron , Castelnaud are good as is the Bastide of Montpazier and the Rouffignac cave.
After a day out it was so good to enjoy a cocktail in the garden late afternoon - a real sun trap and so peaceful.
We had a fabulous time at Lynn's beautiful cottage in all respects and have no hesitation in recommending it as a special place to enjoy a break in wonderful countryside. Brilliant.
