This is a great cabin if you need to recharge your batteries. My wife, our dog, and I went up for the week before Labor Day and we brought our boat (16ft Starcraft fishing boat). The cabin is tucked away on the north side of Squam in quiet Squaw Cove, the water is very protected and there isn't ever very much wind or wave action. The dock was ample for the boat and the drive from the Sandwich Town Launch was a reasonable ride. You can use the State Boat Launch in Holderness as well, but my boat has a small engine and is slow so I opted for the closer one.
Anyway we settled into a nice routine right away, Annabelle's cold nose would wake me up around 6, I'd let her out and feed her. Then should would settle down for an after breakfast nap (she leads a tough life) and I would grab my rods for a couple hours of fishing. When I got back Erin and I would have breakfast and get ready for the day. We'd get ready for whatever activity we had for the day: Hiking (Butterworth/Rattlesnake or Five Fingers Point), Boat trips, Conway Outlets (a day when the weather was rather lousy), sometimes we spent the day doing nothing. I think Erin made it through 2 books. We'd grill dinner and enjoyed cocktails on the deck as the sun went down.
Our ATT phones didn't work at the cabin but did down the road in Holderness or Sandwich Center, however we had a Verizon 4G Hotspot and that worked at the cabin - once a day we'd turn it to make sure the outside world was still there, it's real easy to lose track of the world when you are there. Another thing to keep in mind is that the grocery store is about a half hour away so no forgetting anything at the store - there is a convenience store in Holderness that has the basics.
All in all we had a wonderful time and look forward to going back. The main cabin is setup well for a couple, the sleeping cabins would be great for kids or another couple. I think our dog Annabelle had the best time out of all of us. She's a Black Lab and loves the water and being in the woods and being able to go for a swim whenever she wanted was heaven for her. There is also a dog run installed which was convenient.
We had a delightful vacation at Squaw Cove on Squam Lake. The cottage is indeed very rustic. As one reviewer stated, if you’re looking for luxurious accommodations, look elsewhere. There were no surprises, as I had a lengthy telephone chat with the homeowner prior to booking. The pictures on the web site are representative of the actual surroundings.
The setting alone is deserving of five stars: woods on three sides, the lake on the fourth, which is a mere 50 or 60 feet away. The cove is in a no-wake zone, so the waters are clear, calm and quiet. It is truly a paddlers paradise. There is also excellent hiking in the area.
The owners have graciously allowed well behaved dogs on the property (with prior approval), and the surroundings are indeed dog friendly. Our dog had as much fun as we did!
There is not much negative to report. The owners furnish some bottled drinking water for cooking, drinking, brushing teeth, etc. I don’t know how much they typically allot for guests, but when we arrived there was only half of a 3 gallon container. Between brewing a pot of coffee daily, and filling up water bottles for our hikes, we ran out quickly. We really didn’t mind buying more, as we had to get groceries anyway, but future renters might want to clarify how much will be there and stock up on the way in if necessary, as the nearest grocery is about 7 miles away.
We noticed one of the sleeping cabins has settled a bit and as a result, the door doesn’t fully close. This was not an issue for us, as we didn’t use the building, but might be an issue for others. Friends of ours joined us for a couple of nights, and they stayed in the other sleeping cabin. They reported that is was delightful; there were no issues there.
The kitchen is fairly well equipped. Some of the appliances are a bit old and dated, but still functional.
All in all, we were very pleased with our vacation on Squam Lake. We would definitely choose this rental again.
My wife and I chose to vacation to Squam for our honeymoon the week following Labor Day. I have been vacationing on Squam since i was a little boy, and as always we had a great time. The cottage is cozy, but very comfortable for two people. Squaw cove is a great cove for relaxation. I caught a 1.5 lb pickerel right off of the dock one afternoon! Great week on the lake. Very relaxing. Thanks for sharing your cottage Jen & Bob. We had a great time!!!
This location is and ideal home base for paddling one of the most pristine lakes in New England. Squaw Cove on Squam Lake, and the adjacent cove are scenic, protected from the winds, and designated "no wake" zones. The water is crystal clear and refreshing. The camp is the perfect launch site to paddle to these areas, including "Five Fingers," which is a paddling and hiking area managed and protected by the University of New Hampshire. Excellent hikes are literally right down the road. The camp itself is clean, rustic and well equipped with a great front deck for viewing the cove and watching the loons. Looking for pampered luxury? Look elsewhere. Looking for perfection on a beautiful lake in a wooded paradise? You'll be at home here.
