It is a renowned place for seaside tourism in this region and there are many hotels and summer rental buildings. Having reached the threshold of 20,000 inhabitants in 2009, Rosas obtained from the State its classification as a ciudad, which now makes it, with Figueras, the second city of Alt Empordà. The proximity of the French border and the setting of its bay undoubtedly explain the importance of European residents, particularly French, as in the trade sector. The French community is thus estimated at nearly 2,000 residents [ref. necessary] for all the municipalities of Rosas Bay. Other Europeans, Belgians, Germans, Dutch or British are either permanently retired or owners of second homes while a large Moroccan community also resides continuously. Roses is therefore characterized by a cosmopolitan atmosphere which is undoubtedly a little more pronounced than in other towns on the coast of the Costa Brava. With a view to controlled demographic growth, with a target of 28,000 inhabitants by 2030, a new urban plan was approved in early 2010. In terms of town planning, the city is made up of a city center, the Santa Margarida marina district to the south-west, the Puig Rom-Canyelles-Almadrava residential sector in the north-east towards Cap de Creus and peripheral neighborhoods known as Mas (Busca, Fumats…).
Its traditional fishing fleet is still large today. The port of Roses thus shares with that of Blanes the place of first fishing port of the Costa Brava. The arrival of the TGV in Figueres via Perpignan from the end of 2010 undoubtedly constitutes an important asset for its economic and tourist development. In 2011, despite the economic crisis, Rosas was thus the only city in the province of Girona where the number of real estate transactions remained growing compared to the previous year. Thus, in the midst of a crisis, Rosas has asserted itself as the coastal capital of Empordà thanks to its economic dynamism and its strategic position which keep it attractive despite a difficult environment.
