We spent three weeks from mid-February into early March 2015. There were four of us (two couples) so we had lots of room and were very, very comfortable throughout our stay. We were told that the frequent, heavy evening and early morning rains this year were quite unusual. Hawi seems to be in the transition zone between the arid Kona side and wet north/east sides of the island. We only had to drive 5 miles back towards Kona for the sun to reappear. Hawi is a quaint, small town, which we were told by locals is in the midst of a lot of change with more and more tourists finding out about it. We purposely did not want to stay in the congested resorts/condos found along the Kona Coast. Hawi Haven was recommended to us by friends who've stayed there about 5 times in the past several years. Their recommendation proved to be a good one. The house is fully outfitted with just about anything you would ever need, right down to band aids and sunscreen. The kitchen has tons of room and storage, and all the appliances/cookware you could possibly need. Hawi is in the northeastern corner of the island so we took some very long day trips during our 3-week stay to visit sites we really wanted to get to (Hawaiian Volcanoes NP, Summit of Mauna Kea for sunset). We spaced these longer trips out over our stay so that the long days did not come one after the other. It was just so nice to return to Hawi Haven to kick back and relax. This kind of quieter island experience is probably not for everyone (like if you're looking to go out partying and dancing nightly) but we loved it and plan on returning! And no, three weeks didn't feel like too long a time. The owners were very responsive to our requests while making our arrangements, and clearly have pride in their property.
Hawi Haven was a great house for us. The layout for our family of five (2 parents & 3 adult children) suited us perfectly with plenty of room when we wanted to be together, like in the kitchen or around the big dining room table, or when we wanted to spread out so we could all have our privacy. We appreciated the cleanliness of the house, the extremely comfortable beds, the modern appliances and complete kitchen, and the wi-fi, yet loved how the owners have maintained the charm of the old sugar plantation cottage. In addition, the owners have stocked the house with everything you might need and leave it all at your disposal: plenty of pots, pans, dishes, and every kitchen gadget you can think of; soaps, detergents, lotions, and cleaning products; plenty of linens, including all sizes of towels for kitchen, bath and the beach; drawers and cupboards loaded with paper products, kitchen staples, first aid, office supplies and more; beach equipment, including chairs, coolers, beach bags, snorkeling gear, reef shoes and boogie boards; and even a couple of bicycles. We loved the location and being able to walk to the Nakahara market, the wonderful farmer's market on Saturdays (voted best on the island), and all the quaint shops and restaurants on the main street. It is such a friendly little town. And if you are looking for adventure, you can walk to the Kohala Zipline or Flumin' Kohala, which are right around the corner. Just a few minutes up the road brings you to the gorgeous Pololu Valley, while just a quick jaunt down the highway are some of the most beautiful beaches Hawaii has to offer. If you prefer immersing yourself in the culture, rather than isolating yourself in a resort, this is the place for you. We stayed at Hawi Haven 2-1/2 weeks and never once wished we were staying anywhere else. We look forward to staying here again someday.
The home is clean, well situated and has plenty of space. We enjoyed walking to the nearby town and farmers market. Also, the instructions and recommendations were very helpful. Would stay there again in a heartbeat!
All the glowing comments below are correct. The house was lovely, very clean, spacious and so graciously set up. I didn't realized how important it was to have everything for beach and Hawaii fun right on hand. Greatly added to relaxing and vacation ease. Hawi was magical- only mistake we made was to only stay one week. We will be back!
We stayed at Hawi Haven for a week and really enjoyed ourselves. The house is right in the heart of Hawi so we were able to walk to town to shop, dine and visit the local farmers market. The house far exceeded our expectations and was stocked with everything imaginable. We enjoyed using the beach gear on several occasions and the books in the house came in handy to explore the island. We would absolutely visit Hawi Haven again!
We just returned from spending a week at the Hawi Haven. We had a great time. This is our third trip to Hawaii, the first to the Big Island and Hawi. It was a good change of pace. The town was small and the cottage location was quiet, almost country. The town was two blocks away. We had a large yard, complete with visiting chickens. The house was large. We had more than enough room. We appreciated all the extras: bikes, beach chairs and umbrellas, Dish TV and internet, grill, and almost anything else we needed. The two things that were missing were the furnace and the air conditioning - we didn't need them. We loved having the open windows and having the breeze blow through the house. While Kona is about an hour away, we found many things to explore around Hawi. This house is large enough for a bigger family gathering. We highly recommend it!
