Saint Palais sur Mer without his squares would lose his personality and almost his soul.
They are recognized as heritage of Charente-Maritime.
Large square nets of fishermen clinging to a cabin perched on stilts, they dominate the rocks of our littoral.
These squares allow fishermen to catch shrimps, mullets, bars, sardines and crabs ...
At the end of the 18th century the squares were simple frames of fir trunks 6 to 7 meters high planted in the rocks. They were built in lines distant from the coast, connected to the shore by a line of trunks planted in the rocks and connected by sleepers which allowed the passage to the shore. The net was called Chaudrette or Trouillote. This fishing technique is done at high tide from April to the end of July. At that time it was the women who were fishing for the Chaudrette.
The squares are private properties built on the public domain (DPM). The construction of new slab is subject to authorization.
