We spend a week at The Kona Lighthouse. Our group was 7 adults and one 2 year old. Our family with the child stayed in the master bedroom where they had their own bathroom. Two couples stayed both in other bedrooms where they joined the bathroom. Our single stayed downstairs in his own little apartment.
Everything in the house was like it was in the web pages. No bad suprises at all. The Magic Sands beach was in the walking distance from the house.
The communication and the renting process was very easy with the owners. Our requests conserning the money transfer and everything else were fulfilled.
The renting experience, which was our first, was very pleasing.
We had an absolutely wonderful stay at the Kona Lighthouse property. The description in was perfect for planning our family vacation of my husband and I, 3 adult sons and 2 of their significant others. There was plenty of room for all of us and we loved the lanais and especially the pool when we had the rare time of not traveling to all the amazing sights on the Big Island. It's location was perfect near Kona and right across the street from a snorkeling beach and a few steps more to the White Sands beach. We also had a fantastic snorkeling time at Kahaluu Beach, another beach about a mile a way. Amazing Sunsets right from the upper lanai of the house.
We stayed in mid August and it was hot but we were usually sight seeing during the day and the bedrooms have air conditioning. The air conditioners are on timers that you can control. As a family we try to conserve so we appreciated all the conservation efforts in regard to the use of the air conditioners. There are also many ceiling fans and stand alone fans to provide air circulation. The kitchen was perfect and we cooked//grilled and ate many dinners on the lanai.
We explored both sides of the island and my only regret is that we did not book more time here. There is so much to do and it does take a bit of time to travel to the other side of the island and back .. so plan your trips to that side of the island with that in mind. We especially loved Makalawena Beach and Kikaua Point Beach to the north. We saw so many sea turtles in both locations.On the other side of the island, We went to Hawaii Volcano National Park and were lucky to hike out and see the recent lava flow into the ocean. Our other favorite trip was up to Mauna Kea to see the sunset and full moon rise!!
I would definitely recommend the Kona Lighthouse for any larger type of group who would like to stay together for a very reasonable price!!
Landing at the Kona airport, I wasn't sure what to expect.. There was lava as far as the eye could see!!! After getting our rental car, we drove to the Kona Lighthouse... It was a beautiful drive. Just what I pictured Hawaii to be like :)
When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised at the size of this rental! It was like we had our very own mini Hawaiian resort.. Compared to staying in a hotel, for the price, this was so much better. We had lots of room for our whole family, had cookouts and fun in the pool! We called the owners to get advice on good local restaurants and beaches. There were lots of beach supplies for us to use, like chairs, beach mats and boogie boards.. super fun time.
I have to say though, my favorite part of my stay was waking up before everyone else, and sitting on the porch drinking my coffee watching the waves. It was just what I needed. great house and great trip!
We stayed at the Lighthouse 5 years ago and were excited to see it available again for our family vacation in January. We rent condos/homes often when traveling so have a good comparable to what other owners offer at what price. We are four adult couples.
Pros - Housekeeping had the place very clean upon our arrival. The basic architecture of the home is interesting. The bedrooms are large with closets and very comfortable beds. The pool area is also very nice when the beach is too busy and you want a more intimate setting. As the pool is in the shade most of the time, the water can be chilly but on the other hand very refreshing after you are out in the sun. There is a two car garage which we used. The home has a big kitchen and lanai and is great for family groups to get together but big enough to separate when people need their space. The property is a quick walk to Magic Sands Beach and the view from the lanai is wonderful for whale watching. It is interesting the buildings in front of the home block the traffic noise (Alii Drive can be busy) but you can hear the ocean. There were plenty of towels and beach toys (however some of the items were broken and should be thrown out).
Cons - Since we were there five years ago, maintenance needs have developed. The plumbing in both main floor bathrooms need to be addressed. the master bath is huge with a tub no one uses. Converting this to a walk in shower would be ideal. The master bathroom needs a door and not doorway beads in order to create some privacy from the bedroom. The screen door to the lanai continuously came off the tracks. We had difficulty with the main door lock often( trying to unlock). We were glad to have the garage as car alarms frequently went off during the night. For this reason we tried to lock the house tight when we left but we think the door to the patio could just be pushed open so always took our valuables with us. The rules say you should replace what you use in the kitchen. I don't think this is being followed as we had to buy ALOT of basic kitchen items. An inventory of kitchen supplies by housekeeping may address this.
There are many steps on the premises - not ideal for the elderly or families with small children.
We were 2 couples so we occupied only the top floor of the house. This house would work in the future if we were to bring tour teen grandkids. Overall the house suited our needs adequately. There were just a couple items that were troublesome...
1. Master bathroom, jetted spa tub is elevated so you had to step up onto the platform and then step into the tub. We didn't use the spa portion...just the shower. The spa tub was surrounded with a multi-paneled plastic shower curtain that was difficult to keep closed. I understand the curtains were there to keep water off the floor.
2. The deck was made so that you had to step down to get to the tables...the space is narrow to begin with and stepping down was something we had to get comfortable with.
3, We got a good work out traversing the steep, narrow stairs down to the pool.
The location of this house was great...short drive into the Village and easy access to everything we wanted to see. There are so many good restaurants that we didn't get to Da Poke Shack just down on Alii Drive...next time!
Lovely home with loads of room. Stayed here with both sets of our parents and our two small children. Pool was nice to have, though the decking around it has some loose/aged boards. Would still rent again, but not in August. The heat and humidity were uncomfortable at night even with the fans and windows open. Few homes on Big Island have air conditioning and this home only has one unit in the master bedroom. Short 5 minute walk to Magic Sands beach which has a nice beach/shade, decent snorkeling and nice waves to play in. 5 minute drive up Ali'i Drive to all the restaurants and shops of Kona. Would rent again.

Golf: Alguns dos melhores campos de golfe do mundo estão localizados na Ilha Grande. Existe um campo público chamado de Big Island Country Club apenas até a rua em Keauhou. Até ao norte do campo público é em Waikoloa Village. Todos os grandes resorts ao norte tem campos de golfe de classe mundial.
Ski: Quando há neve em Mauna Kea você pode alugar esquis e snowboards em Hilo e contratar um 4WD veículo para levá-lo ao topo. Você ski eo veículo impulsiona para baixo para buscá-lo e levá-lo de volta. Você ainda pode usar pranchas de bodyboard ou câmaras de ar para deslizar para baixo da montanha.
