Off the beaten path of Acadia, we found this cute appartment, a great way to explore the subtle treasures of Acadia. While this place is on the quiet side of Desert Island, most attractions were very easy to reach within a thirty minutes drive.
Bruce, the owner, was very helpful with maps and tips, also provided us with a flashlight in the middle of the night, when a storm cut the electricity. And we would definitely come back as soon as possible!
This is a nice, clean, quiet place to rent. We enjoyed our stay there and the owner is considerate and helpful if you're coming to this area of Maine for the first time. I would recommend staying here, it's a good place to relax and close enough to Bar Harbor, etc. to easily get around.
We just needed a quiet, relaxing vacation with a lot of fresh air, and this place offers everything. Though it's on the quiet side of the island, an easy 15-30 min drive can get you to all the things the park offers. This home is neat and clean, and the owner Bruce is super nice. If you don't have time to collect information about the park and what to do before you get there, no worries, Bruce gets all the maps, brochures for you. Not enough? Just ask Bruce. He's very knowledgeable about the area! He recommended a cruise which he thought would be good for my family, and my family loved it. We also went to a free musical in a boat house which he was going to. Very nice and everyone enjoyed it. It's my first time trying vacation rental, and I'm glad it's a very pleasant experience.
Bruce was a fantastic and accommodating host and has a wonderful home. For example, not only did he build a fire for us one night, when experiencing above-normal temperatures for Maine, Bruce went out and bought an additional window fan for us to use later in the day. He was also readily available to answer questions and give suggestions as other guests have mentioned. Bruce's apartment is as described and true to the photographs posted. Bruce has refined taste, but manages to make his apartment feel accessible and extremely comfortable at the same time. His apartment is also very clean and well-maintained. Finally, although we were somewhat concerned about the property owner living downstairs and being home during our stay before we stayed at Bruce's since we wanted to have lots of peace and quiet while there, that fear dissipated immediately - we actually did not even know when he was home because he was so quiet. He is the ultimate host and we will definitely be back and have already recommended Bruce's place to others.
If you want a place away from the touristy Bar Harbor, then this is the place for you. It is close enough to drive the entire island, so you can visit Bar Harbor and then get back to the quietness here at FernCrest. After a day you will truly call this place home and not want to leave. It is exactly as it is sold online. Bruce is welcoming and helpful and supplies you with various maps and an abundance of information to make your visit that much better. Bruce gave us many ideas of things to do on our visit to take advantage of and we took all his recommendations, and not one of his recommendations let us down. He even gave us directions to help save us time. If we were to come back to Maine, this is definitely where we will stay again. I feel so fortunate to find this oasis that we got to call home.
We loved this place...peaceful, beautiful, super clean and Bruce was, as another reviewer said, very helpful but not intrusive. If we didn't live so far away we would love to come back for every season. It is truly the best of both Acadia worlds.....the 'quieter side' offers the 'other' harbors: Southwest, Northeast and Bass which are worth exploring. Then of course you have Bar Harbor close enough(check out the changing tides at Frenchman's Bay). We did everything Bruce suggested and that other travelers mentioned in the house journal. This was our fifth trip to Acadia in 28 years, and we experienced more of the area than ever before.
