I feel I must give an honest review of the cottage to warn others before they book. The cottage really does need a lot doing to meet the ordinary expectations of the average holiday-maker. At first we accepted its faults but as the Christmas week wore on these became somewhat intolerable. Everything we touched seemed to be faulty from various cupboard door handles that fell off in your hands to the tap in the bathroom that did a 360 degree turn before it could be turned on. The plug mechanism in the bath was unattached from the bath. The bath sealant was mouldy and we had to wash all the towels before we could use them as they were fusty. We had to go out and buy light bulbs as some had blown. One very disconcerting thing was that there were no curtains or blinds in the bathroom or kitchen and when trying to reignite the boiler on average over 20 times a day and through the night also as the outside temperature was -3C we felt very vulnerable as there was no privacy. We felt that the house had been closed for the Winter and forgotten. The additional electric heaters did not work either. The sofas have seen better days and after a week there we all suffered with bad backs as we were virtually horizontal by the end of the evening as there was no support whatsoever.
Although the cottage is spacious and has potential it really should be repaired and decorated to a higher standard. We would not recommend this cottage at the moment as all the problems we have stated were mentioned on numerous times by other people and they all seem to have been ignored by the owner.
This could be a lovely place to stay if it was clean and decor freshened up ! The inside of windows are hanging with cobwebs and whole house is in need of a duster and hoover . The bath has mouldy silicone in the places silicone exist , and dirty looking where the silicone is missing . The sofas/chair in the sitting room are very uncomfortable ( support gone ) . We tried to contact caretakers to ask for mop and bucket ( message never answered ) and washing machine appears to be an ornament ( unable to find power to it ), again no response from caretakers .Garden is in no way secure ( broken fence panels with old windows situated in the missing slats ) not safe for our dog let alone a child . Heating system seems to be set and unable to increase at 19 ( snowing when we were there ) it was chilly in the house . To end on a positive note the beds were clean and comfortable
This is a lovely tardis of a cottage. It is far bigger than it looks from outside. We loved it. The beds were comfy and the bedding lovely too. There’s a great whirlpool bath with jets. The kitchen is well equipped and spacious. Yes the sofas are on the low side but you get used to them. The upstairs is huge with a massive bedroom and a mezzanine landing with loads of books and a comfy sofa too. It’s a great place to stay with loads to see around and about. There’s Stirling with its castle and the Wallace monument, lovely towns like Callander, the Trossachs, the magnificent Kelpies, the Falkirk Wheel plus a couple of great distilleries to visit. Also lots of walking on the hills if you wish. And of course at the end of the day back to the lovely Birkenwood Cottage. The neighbours who are the caretakers for the cottage are lovely too and will help if any problems at all. Loved it. Far enough back from the road for it not to be a problem lovely and quiet even during bonfire season.
We booked at short notice for a short break and it was just what we needed. Comfy beds, well appointed and fab jacuzzi bath!
Handy for the safari park, Stirling, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Although not good for dogs in Edinburgh - all the parks were locked and there is a waiting list to walk dogs. Who knew?? Well equipped village store in Gargunnock.
There were so many things to do and to enjoy - and all of them were just around the corner: the great Loch Lomond Area, castles and small towns to visit, Glasgow, the Kelpies in the flesh, Edinburgh, Inverary... And after all our activities we were looking forward to coming "home" to Birkenwood cottage with all its coziness and even luxury.
We had a really great time there.
Short drive to Stirling attractions. Caution needed when exiting driveway due to high bushes which block site view of oncoming traffic. Very dangerous. Cottage needs refurbishing (sofas need replacing) and minor repairs such as caulking around tub and kitchen tap dripping constantly. There are no blinds on kitchen windows which is unnerving at night in particular. Property grounds and exterior needs attention as well. Nonetheless cottage was cozy and adequately equipped and we were comfortable.
