The farmhouse is situated basically in the redwoods state and national parks, but is right next to 101, so there is a bit of road noise and it isn't as secluded as we hoped. The farmhouse itself is interesting and fun, but a little weird as there are no doors (even to the one bedroom) aside from the door to the bathroom. So not a whole lot of privacy if you are there with a group. The Main floor is nice and the gas fireplace was quite lovely and so easy to use. The kitchen looked good but needed a bit of love... The microwave looked brand new, and would turn on, but literally would not heat anything. Cup of coffee 4 minutes on high heat and it would be not even luke warm. Also, the ice machine in the freezer became possessed and spat ice shards all over anytime you opened the freezer until we emptied the ice in to the trash and turned the ice machine off. Those were all the negatives though. The tub in the bathroom was wonderful. Great hikes right out the front door and an elk herd across the street.
Spent 3 nights ... arrived first day and thermostat was out so quite chilly in house (temps upper 30s outside); however, gave us opportunity to meet nice neighbor who fixed it. The owner was so nice and offered to treat us to dinner in Trinidad for the inconvenience but we declined - just considered it part of our travel adventure. Other than that hiccup, house and location were perfect for exploring Redwoods National/State Park. It felt like a cozy cabin and had large bedroom (queen) and bath (great shower), large open kitchen/dining/living area with comfy sofa. Kitchen was well-appointed - lots of appliances, spices, hot chocolate, coffee filters, etc. Also binoculars and telescope available to use. Lots of great tourist literature and books about the area. Satellite TV didn't have very good reception or options - but only turned on once. Wifi serviceable - could surf but not stream. Got no phone reception - but not a bad thing! There were 2 lofts; however, just two of us so never went up there except to take pictures of elk in the yard!
It was only a couple of miles to lots of hiking, redwoods, and ocean views - did lots of day trips and were still able to come "home" for lunch. One day arrived back to house to find a herd of 30-40 elk surrounding the house and gardens - lots of pictures. We drove the Drury Parkway several times during our 3 days and took lots of short hikes through the redwoods - amazing to see. Drove down to Golden Bluffs and saw 2 huge bull elk on the beach! Yes, the beach! Also so small herds of black-tail dear. Day trip up to Klamath area to see where Klamath River enters the Pacific - impressive and windy - and drove through a redwood tree. Visit to Kuchel Visitors Center - right on the Pacific, good information/maps, very knowledgeable rangers.
Found a gem in an unlikely looking location - The Palms Cafe! It's right on the main drag through Orick and on first glance old/dated. However, the food was excellent (best bacon cheeseburger ever - twice!) and awesome breakfasts (all 3 mornings) plus the best of all was the staff (waiters, cook, etc.) and the locals. We thoroughly enjoyed spending time there - excellent company and excellent conversation. Also did take-out one evening from Shoreline Deli & Market - grabbed a couple of sandwiches and chips ... quite tasty and the ladies there were extremely friendly.
It was right off Hwy 101 so some traffic noise and lights at night but not really an issue. Highly recommend
Very comfortable home, clean and interesting. Loved the location, didn't love the stairs or the ladders...But I loved being on the second floor for the view! Great hikes without getting in the car! Nature literally at your doorstep!
Our family of 5 wanted to experience a few days of Redwood trees, hiking and the beauty of nature. This property fully met our needs/desires and the location was the absolute best. The property was fully prepared for our arrival and we had no problems whatsoever. If you wish to spend a few days enjoying trees, waterfalls, hiking and nature in a great location that offered full privacy and fully modern accommodations in a very relaxing "get-away" environment, this is definitely the place to stay. A couple of bedrooms are in lofts and you will need to navigate stairs to the entrance, but unless you have limitations that these factors will impact you, I can assure you that you will enjoy your stay at this Contemporary Farmhouse at Redwood National Park!
Having a dishwasher full of dirty dishes was a bit smelly. I understand the dishwasher was broken but the dishes from the previous tenants should have been taken care of before we got there would have been nice.
Over all the place was very nice.
This property did produce a whole herd of elk wandering through the yard on a sunny afternoon. We enjoyed sitting and watching the herd of elk wonder by with a cold drink in the afternoon. It is a good house that looks like someone once loved it a lot. It has many things that make it feel comfortable like a home and is reasonably well equipped in the kitchen bathroom and closet. The space was clean and easy to use with kids and family. The tenants below were only seen twice and once was to deliver a new coffee maker. However the single bed in the loft is very uncomfortable and should be replaced. A smaller couch would be more appropriate for the space.
