La ruche in the village of Meyrals was the perfect location for exploring the Perigord Noir area in the Dordognes. This medieval home was spacious, comfortable, interesting, and had everything needed for an enjoyable stay. The listing was accurate and we were pleasantly surprised with the unobtrusive church bells, friendly neighbours, safe and easy parking and a charming village. Michael, the owner, gave great directions and information to explore the area.
I am very happy to recommend La Ruche and we would love to stay there again.
We were delighted with this find. La Ruche is a work-of-art, in a tiny cobbled village, and entering it is like stepping back into mediaeval times. The rooms are full of beams and charm, with lots of characterful artwork and little touches. If you want to be immersed in old stone, quirky corners and historic archways – this is the place for you. It was perfect for Autumn, with its big log fire and welcoming atmosphere as the mists rolled in.
As for things to do: we think the star of the prehistoric show is Rouffignac Cave. The journey on an open train into the cliff is dark and mysterious, with ancient art unfolding all around you. Then at the end you disembark to marvel at the secret carvings on the low roof. Awe-inspiring. (Everybody else seemed to be queuing frantically for Font de Gaume, which was always full ... but luckily we realised we’d seen it last time and couldn’t remember much about it! Rouffignac was the one we wanted to go back to.)
Oh – and the Chateau des Milandes is fascinating, with its story of Josephine Baker. Even if, like us, you know nothing about her. Bonnes Vacances!
We had an absolutely wonderful stay in Meyrals.
La Ruche is utterly charming and beautifully restored which meant that there was always some lovely nook or cranny to look at or relax in - the character of this house is simply stupendous. The living room has a beautiful fireplace and everything you need, whether it be magazines and books about the area, instant access to Wi Fi, a CD player with a great collection of classical music or satellite TV. The bedroom is spacious and stylish with a lovely, big comfortable bed and a delightful bathroom just next door. Another big plus was that the well equipped kitchen remained refreshingly cool, even in blazing heat outside.
We were there in high season and thought the location was perfect - so close to Sarlat, Les Eyziers and the other main attractions of the area, and yet so peaceful to return to at end of the day for a nice glass of wine on the balcony and a chat with the very friendly neighbour.
The village itself is also a small gem and there are very interesting galleries to visit on the doorstep. Having the local bakery close to the house was great for provisions and a nice stroll in the morning.
Michael and Belinda (the owners) were extremely hospitable and could not have been more helpful - many thanks for all of the tips they gave to us and congratulations on creating such a lovely, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for their guests.
It was a perfect introduction to the Dordogne. We certainly recommend La Ruche and are hoping to return soon.

The property is delightful, typically French with ancient beams, stone steps and tiled floors. It is well maintained and has all the essentials including Wi-Fi. There are lots of books on France, brochures of places to visit and even a piano, not to mention the artist's studio on the upper floor. The house is in a small village (many of whose inhabitants are artists and all of whom are very friendly), in a very scenic area. It is better to arrive in daylight if possible. We arrived very late due to poor flight connections and would not have found the house in the dark had it not been for very kind staff at the nearby restaurant who guided us there. Parking was easy, especially by the pond but the steep cobblestone street might pose a problem for older folk. A good base from which to explore the surrounding area, also a very comfortable home if one chose to stay in and relax.
Dear Michael and Belinda.
Thanks for everything. We were having such a great time in and out of the house, that we lost completely every touch down to earth. It was marvelous, the house not only wonderful furnished and full of personal history, but also in a perfect setting to discover the whole area. And we did. The few days it was raining we stayed at home, enjoying the piano (remembering old times for me) or doing the puzzles. But in general we were doing so many things outdoors. We do not want to repeat recommendations , but for us visiting the gardens of Marqueyssac on a Thursday evening and night was such a magic experience, that we will hardly forget. You are the owners of a small piece of heaven. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Well we hope that you continue renting heaven and thanks for everything again

We spent a fantastic week in "La Ruche" and what a wonderful house it is. We arrived in Meyrals, parked by the pond and were amazed at how beautiful the village is. La Ruche is just perfect and suited our needs so well with its origional stone work and oak beams,Belinda and Michael have thought of everything you could need for a relaxing and peacefull stay. We slept so well in the very comfortable bed and it was great to relax in the sitting room with a night cap most evenings. The first evening we had a meal at the Auberge de Meyrals and although it was perfectly ok we did not return (I hope that says enough). There are many wonderful places to sampel French cuisine and we returned to Beynac-et-Cazenac 2 or 3 times. The local markets at St- Cyprien and Sarlat are brilliant with no tourist tatt to be seen just local produce (the cherries are tremendous). We visited so many places none of which failed to leave us with great memories, however my personal memory that I will never forget is the outstandingly beautiful countryside around the Perigord region. This was our first trip to France and it will not be our last, I recomend La Ruche very highly and hope you enjoy your holiday in Meyrals as much as we did.
