My husband and I rented this wonderful cottage for the month of July this year. We wanted to be close to the water in an affordable cottage and have our my son's family with 2 grandchildren come to visit. Cape's End fit that criteria. All the reviews have stated everything we loved about the cottage. Ours days began end ended on the deck, breakfast in the morning, then we couldn't wait to get home before sundown to sit out again with a glass of wine and enjoy the birds flowing overhead and listen to the sounds of the ocean.
We really appreciated how well stocked the cottage was with games, DVDs, puzzles and more. We used the wood burning stove many evenings and on the occasional cold, rainy day having the warm stove going was very comforting. Southport is a gem, walks to the dock, the library and the Inn along with drives up to the general store and gift shop are a must. We even got to be a part of the first ever Southport 4th of July parade. Also, go visit the neighbors up the road next to the library who are raising alpacas. Great folks who are very happy to have you visit. After spending a day out with lots of other tourists Cape's End was a perfect retreat to come home to. And yes, it did feel like home, rustic but cozy.
The perfect place to stay in Maine. Well supplied. Everything very clean. Near to a store and the beach and the town dock. Away from the usual summer tourist crowd, but close enough to join in. Comfortable. Nice view. Owners easy to deal with and make you feel at home. Stay here for a great, quiet, real Maine vacation!
We have never been to Maine before, and this was our first time using Homeaway. So I think we were a little naïve in thinking the cottage was nicer than it was.
We brought 2 small children; this cottage is much better suited for adults. The wood stove doesn't have any protection around it so we could not use it- and the nights were in the 50's. The carpet is well used and pieced together, so we didn't let the children lay on it. Anne was very disappointed that we didn't vacuum before we left and that we left some small shells on the picnic table and the porch cushions were damp when we brought them in which Anne was also very upset about. We were disappointed that we had to go 3 miles to get to any water access and a fisherman on the town dock warned us away from the row boat because it leaks too much to bail it out fast enough. The yard is small and there is not a lot for kids to do here- no TV- just a very small monitor and DVD player. The neighbor's houses are much closer than they appear in the photos, and the view was disappointing. You can't get closer to the water because of the neighbors yard's taking up the whole ocean side of the house.
Adults would do fine here; the grill was nice and there are lots of places to walk and the library was perfect on a rainy day. (No wi fi or cell towers, so you will be unplugged unless you are at the library.) The kitchen was well stocked- no toaster but that's a little thing for adults. There is room for two cars. And best of all- it is very quiet and peaceful. There are two bikes to use as well.
So the price was right but you get what you pay for. Not the whole cottage- just the back 4 rooms.
If I had any complaints I wouldn't have stayed here for 3 out of the last 4 years. (I wanted to stay that one year but I had other family commitments.)
I echo the sentiments of the reviewers before me. You will feel right at home, as if you were staying at a favorite relative's home who could not bear the thought of it being empty and not enjoyed while they went away.
There are games to be played, bicycles to be ridden, oars to be paddled, and flowers to be loved.
Get up early and ride a bike to the Inn's waterfront or the public dock. Watch the ospreys and cormorants as the sun rises.
Cook for yourself on the grill or in the kitchen. Eat on the deck. Take-out from Robinson's or Bet's.
The coziest cottage at the Cape's end!!
Cool ocean breezes. Quiet cups of coffee on the deck. Contemplation of the cove's beauty.
Countless stars at night. The cadence of the waves caresses your slumber.
Clean and well-kept.
I'm coming back.
Our family of three enjoyed everything about our experience staying at the Cape's End cottage. We had pleasurable and professional communications from the moment we were inquiring about the cottage to the moment we left for home.
When we arrived, we immediately felt at home. The location has a wonderful view of Cape Harbor and the Cockolds Lighthouse. For activities during our stay, our 10yr daughter went to a local camp during the morning and we would spend the afternoons going into town, visiting local sites (like the amazing Boothbay Botanical Garden) or sitting on the back deck and reading in the shade.
The cottage was stocked with everything we needed in the kitchen and bathroom which made for easier packing. There is a wood stove and we did end up using it (even in July) for a few rainy nights.
In conclusion I would recommend staying at this cottage - its cozy experience made for a wonderful two weeks in July.
A comfortable and accommodating place to stay. Rustic decor reflects the feel of an older Maine coast cottage. The location at Cape Newagen is ideal for day-dreaming on the deck, short walks to the town landing and library. Clean, well-maintained property, comfortable beds. Robinson's twin lobster dinners, the Puffin cruise and kayaking in the Sheepscot River were highlights. Be sure to Southport General Store, for good eats, great wines and sundries.
