We stayed at Crispie Lodge at the end of May 2015.
When travelling to Crispie our Sat Nav took us via the Ferry from Gourock to Dunoon, the ferry cost £21 for a family of 5. On our return journey we went via the Trossachs and Loch Lomond.
Cripsie Lodge itself is excellent accommodation; very clean, spacious, comfortable and warm. The kitchen facilities are particularly good; the chest freezer, quality and selection of cooking utensils and pans make self catering easy. But it is worth bearing in mind you are some distance from a supermarket and may like to bring most of what you need with you.
The views across the loch are truly stunning and the accommodation is well laid out to provide comfortable seating and facilities to enjoy them. The Sky TV and Jacuzzi were very welcome for days when the weather wasn’t so good.
My boys loved the Jacuzzi which was well maintained and warm. The garden is extensive and leads directly onto the beach. The beach shelves very gradually and there is plenty of sand for sand castles and rock pools to explore when the tide is out and lots of pebbles to throw when the tide is in. We used our kayak on several occasions’. On the drive to the estate you encounter deer, pheasants, Highland coos, sheep and red squirrels.
Places we would recommend are Oban for the distillery and great seafood from the seafood hut and excellent fish and chips. Puck’s Glen has nice walks suitable for children. Inveraray Jail is great fun to visit, impressive castle too. The Loch Fyne brewery has good local beer. Cruachan Power station is really interesting. We took the ferry to Tarbert, you can either take the car or travel on foot. Taking the car is quite expensive.
There are several places to eat out which are about 30 mins drive away. The Oyster Catcher at Otterferry and the Kames Hotel all offer good quality local specialities and local beers. Very child friendly too! Portavadie Marina is worth a visit, especially now the new leisure complex is finished, great food, afternoon tea, cakes etc.
Duncan’s shop in Kames sells local groceries as well as essentials.
Lovely to see Lizzie and Paul again, nothing was too much trouble and they provide a cornucopia of local knowledge. This was our first visit to Argyll and Bute; usually we stay near Inverness. But we would definitely recommend Crispie to anyone looking for the ultimate luxury get away from it all holiday. We would love to come back and would highly recommend Crispie to anyone!
What can I say....Crispie Lodge is one of the best we've been fortunate enough to find, with everything you could possibly expect in a holiday home and more. The property was recommended to us and didn't disappoint. Fabulous week, stunning views and highly recommended!
I have just visited the site to book the Lodge for next year & saw an extremely negative review from a dissatisfied visitor to Crispie House. Whilst clearly problems can always occur I would just like to redress the balance a little having visited the Lodge several times over the last few years. The property is beautiful, very well appointed & in a quite spectacular setting. We have never found Liz & Paul to be anything other than helpful & courteous, they are always willing to go the extra mile if they can help with a special request. Yes the water can be brownish but this is the Scottish countryside, knowing Liz & Paul I feel sure that if asked they would probably have decanted the bottles into smaller more manageable ones if they felt the visitors had a physical challenge to cope themselves. I will be back for sure next year & hopefully for many years to come.
The alure of this beautiful property has drawn us back 4 times to date and intend to go again in the future.
The first impression you get when walking in to the property are the stunning views down the Loch towards Arron. Be warned, it is possible to lose many hours surveying the ever changing vista and keep an eye out for the occassional pod of dolphins, porpoise and otter in the bay. A pair of binoculars are an essential!
The property is very comfortable, homely and well appointed and the welcome you receive from Liz and Paul on arrival makes it feel like staying with friends, rather than staying in a rental property.
Crispie has the perfect mix of being very private and feeling remote, whilst having relatively convenient access to local facilities. Try the Oystercatcher at Otter Ferry for lunch or the marina at Portavardie for dinner. If your looking for a local feel, try the Kames hotel for a pint and on your way, drop in at Duncan's store and pick up some provisions.
We love this place and look forward to going back every year. Hope you do too.
We were lucky enough to have rented Crispie House to celebrate a big birthday, and invited close friends and family. The drive to the House is very long - so long that you keep wondering if you missed a turn somewhere, but once you get there you forget the drive. The location is just fab.
The house has a very relaxing atmosphere as it is not overly Boutique-y, more family friendly.
Our welcome on arrival was very friendly, and informal, with the rules of the house laid out clearly but in a nice way. Information on local amenities, walks, and boat trips were all available.
The kitchen is set up for catering for 16, with loads of fridge and freezer space, and plenty of crockery.
If you are lucky enough to have one of the two front facing bedrooms you are in for a treat. The views are just amazing - whatever the weather.
The other bedrooms don't have the views, but they are still fine - after all you're not there to sleep.
With the weather not amazing we spent a lot of time in the pool, where the kids had a ball. Some of the party went exploring on bikes, others went on walks, and others borrowed one of the boats. The kids were always happy playing on the beach, picking mussels and getting wet.
I would recommend Crispie to anyone who wants a family gathering, or a group of friends who want a week of chilling out and relaxing together.
We'll certainly be back.... and our friends have already booked it for next year!
We first stayed in Crispie Lodge in 2007 and have been back a further 4 times, we just can't find a better place to go :) We are a family of 6, some teenagers included and we all love our holidays here, so much to see and do, or just relax in the Jacuzzi and enjoy the ever changing views. If you're lucky you'll see deer, otters, pine marten all of which we have seen. You can fish, walk, swim, and definitely recharge your batteries.
Liz and Paul are extremely friendly, helpful, informative and make you feel very welcome.
We can't wait to return and would highly recommend this holiday, it's perfect.
