The house was brimming with southern French village character - the village itself was very peaceful and a really good base to explore what is, in my estimation, the nicest part of the country. If you like wine, there are many wineries to visit and the general quality of produce (both in terms of food and wine) will knock most of what England has to offer into a cocked hat! A simple market on Saturday morning in the next town over (Lagrasse, I think) offers trout and salmon that they will fish out and bash over the head for you right there and then - not for the squeamish perhaps, but well worth it as far as eating goes! A few reviewers have maligned Le Grand Café, but in our experience it was actually a lively place with decent, simple food and we found the locals to be very open and accommodating, though I suspect this had much to do with our group comprising a number of fluent French speakers - as Georges Brassens put it, the area is as much in Spain and Italy as in France - I think that sums it up very accurately! Already thinking about returning!
Deceptively spacious town house, well equipped and in a nice little town, which was quiet, but with enough facilities. We have rented a few houses over the years and you have to remember this is different from staying in a hotel. What you require is a clean and comfortable base for your exploration of the area. We were not disappointed. We found the house to be clean and well thought out, managing to cram a lot into a small area. The minor inconvenience of going through one bedroom to another was no problem, since we don't tend to walk around naked! There are a couple of nice bars in the town, with free wifi, so we were able to keep up with emails, etc. The "Grand Café" looked quite run down, but the staff were friendly and the wifi worked a treat. There is a boulengerie, but the newsagents sells bread on a Sunday when they are closed. We tried takeaway pizza from the shop in town, which were delicious. Lezignan-Corbieres was nearby, with cheap fuel from Intermarché or Carrefour and a railway station, which we made use of as well. The area is obviously well-known for it's wines and you won't be disappointed, it is available everywhere and you could lose days just visiting domaines and cave cooperatives in any town you wish to visit. Make sure you visit Carcassonne, it is a delight. Even the "Ville Bas" has interest with trips on the Canal du Midi, markets and restaurants. Don't pay for parking. There is plenty of free parking within walking distance of the Cité, rather than pay €1 per hour in the main parks.
Although the owners are not local they are easily contacted by email and can provide any information you require. We had a great time and are planning to return next year.
We arrived late after our journey from Calais and were delighted with what we saw when we arrived in the village. Fabrezan is a charming place with a shop, boulangerie, bars and a delightful restaurant. We drove past the bars where people were sitting outside enjoying their evening and to the house.
The house itself was exactly as described , extremely clean, well equipped and welcoming; we immediately felt at home here.
The neighbours and locals in the village were very friendly. We had never visited this area before and were very impressed with the scenery and with the range of different places to visit and things to see. We particularly enjoyed swimming in the river nearby, visiting local villages such as Minerve, with its spectacular gorge, and La Grasse, the Cathar history and the incredible chateau at Peyrepetuse, the beach at Narbonne Plage and sampling wine at some of the local caves. We also went further afield to Montpelier and Perpignan and to the excellent indoor market in Narbonne
We felt so at home that we eat in most evenings cooking and eating on the terrace (when it wasn't too windy) but also had a fantastic three course meal with excellent wine at a very reasonable price at Les Calicots in the village. We also found time to stroll to the bakery for the croissants and sit and read on the terrace in the sunshine most mornings.
The only slight snag was that it was quite windy especially in the first week and at times we had to abandon the beach due to being sand blasted!
The owner was very helpful and replied to my queries very promptly suggesting some places we could go and barbecue nearby.
I would definitely recommend this to my friends and would return myself...I also found myself perusing the estate agent's window and thinking about taking up residence permanently here!!
We have returned home thoroughly relaxed and having had a great holiday.
This property is exceptionnally clean and well maintained. Bed linens, towels and dishes are in generous supply and of excellent quality. Everything was in good working condition and the three full bathrooms were exceptionnaly clean. We were three couples and were never short of anything even the hot water is abundant. The owners are the most cooperative and helpful you could hope for. They provide you with clear and precise instruction that I invite you to read in full. You will find them very helpful and they will make you feel right at home. Their housekeeper is exceptional and went out of her way to help us with a little inconvenient we suffered. This property is ideally located (a little hard to find at first) and always less than one hour driving from prestigious sites (Narbonne,Perpignan, Queribus,Carcassonne Maury for its wine and Port la Nouvelle for the beach.. Even if we were in the last days of september the weather was in the 30C and the water very good. While the house is fully equipped we decided to try out a few restos and found them all to be of excellent value. Les Calicots is classy, friendly and affordable, the pizzeria excellent and the small resto beside it is worth a visit. Their bisque and bruschetta are excellent and the wine is good and cheap. We also went to the Clos des Souquets and were greeted by the owner who was friendly and made sure we enjoyed our meal. Again excellent food but a little pricier than the other. However eating by the pool was well worth it. I would not want to forget commenting on the nice people in the area, the next door neighbour who made us smile everyday and gave us good recommandation on places to visit or a couple living on the street who reserved a table for us at the Clos des Souquets. There is a small grocery within five minutes walk and it is well supplied and very affordable..
If you are a wine lover uou will find that the region has many wondefull winemaker within short distance from . You will find unbelievable wine at very good price.Enjoy tasting before buying. Finally if you have time go to see the Viaduc the Milau and the Cirque of Navacelles. It will take most of a day but believe me both are must see.. I hope you will enjoy your visit in this house as much as we did and I know that I have recommended the place to friends and relatives and one of them will be booking shortly with them
Great house, fully furnished and really comfortable. Great area, full of fabulous places. I really recommend renting this property for really unforgetable vacation.
The Owner is very friendly and always ready to assist you with any information needed.
I couldn't find any better place for my holiday!
