Wilderness Wind Yurt
We absolutely loved staying in the yurt. Our host, Dan, was so accommodating and welcoming. There is so much to do in the area. We highly recommend this place if you are looking for a rustic resort experience.
Perfect place to unwind and recharge
We stayed in the Eagle yurt at Wilderness wind for almost a week, and it was a sublime experience. The Yurt was clean, well appointed, and painstakingly cared for. My family of 6 had everything we needed to enjoy our stay down to the warm and cozy quilts for the cool evenings. The yurt is situated on a small hill, overlooking beautiful lake Armstrong and the rest of the Wilderness Wind resort. It is just far enough away from the common space and other cabins to afford some privacy, but still close to the bath house.
Guests should understand that while the yurt does have running, potable water, the water is cold and there is no toilet. The bath house is very close and provides clean, hot showers and pit toilets. Anyone who has ever stayed in a campground would be familiar with the set up, although the bath house at Wilderness Wind is much cleaner than any campground bath house I have experienced.
The hosts, Dan and Jay, have to be some of the most welcoming and hospitable people I have ever met. It was truly a joy to spend time with them and their love of the area and it’s wildlife was apparent. We especially enjoyed the canoes and kayaks provided at the resort and caught a lot of fish on the lake.
By staying at Wilderness Wind you are also supporting a non profit organization that helps at risk youth in the Chicago area learn leadership skills!
I truly can’t think of a better place to spend your time in the Ely, MN area. If you are reading this review, you should just stop searching and book your stay at the Eagle Yurt at Wilderness Wind!
Felt Like Home.
Our week's stay could not have been any better. Okay, we could have done without the mosquitoes, but I guess they got there first. Our hosts, Randy and Dan, were amazingly welcoming and wonderful. Talking with either, you feel like you've known them forever. Thank you, guys! When our boys were little we lived for a number of years in a yurt in PA. Now the boys are nearing 30 yo, and us all together again in the Wilderness Winds yurt was both a lovely and bittersweet timewarp for us. We all agreed that our yurt time years ago was some of the best times we had together as a family. Being able to relive those times, but also to make new wonderful memories at Wilderness Winds was truly a blessing. Thanks again guys.
5 kids / 5 adults lake vacation
We thought the yurt was very nice - kinda fancy camping since we had a fridge and stove but still a few bugs. 5 kids slept on the loft which worked pretty well. A tip we realized half way through the trip: put towels on the railing to block light so they will maybe sleep while we stayed up. Kitchen worked great - we good all our meals there for 5 days! Loved all the activities - kayaks, paddle boats, motor boat, fishing off the dock, sandy area to play with sand toys (we brought our own), many great life jackets, fun floaties, great fire pit with 10 chairs. Jay was nice to give us a ride on his pontoon too! When the littles were napping we also used the gathering cabin to play games and read. They had some other toys and books there for us so that was nice too. Sheets/pillows/towels all provided so that helped with packing. We brought our own tye dye kit and made 10 bandannas for our group - fun!
Some improvements maybe could be a check in spot when you arrive - we were a little confused if we were in the correct spot and there really isn't a check in, a list of what is in the kitchen for before hand, and a mattress pad for the sofa sleepers (they are a bit uncomfortable and dusty). Thanks so much we hope to be back sometime!
Thank you for visiting Armstrong, your new Ely home. Come again. Great idea about using shade to help kids sleep in! We have extra mattress covers for the sofa that can be stored for use. The extra Wilderness Wind sign will be placed at the end of the end of driveway near lakeshore—this can guide guests to the cabins/yurt. Wonderful suggestions—thank you. Dan
We took our 6 kids here to get away and enjoy the outdoors. This place was quiet, beautiful and perfect for us. We will definitely be coming back! Lots to do paddle boat, canoes, kayaks, fishing rods and bikes if needed.
The Eagle Yurt was a fun experience of our family. Perfectly situated between Ely and Tower so enjoy all the area has to offer. Beautiful sunsets on the dock with loons calling every night.
