Great place to stay for kids and adults!
Charming, rustic resort to swim, boat, relax and fish. Many hikes, restaurants, and things to do. We visited the bear center and wolf center while we visited. We also did a short hike to a waterfall. We enjoyed evenings at the lake kayaking, making s’mores and visiting with other guests and their dogs. We plan to come back next year.
One-stop family camping
The yurt experienced a freak-of-nature accident with a fallen tree this summer and the poor owners were really trying to pull together to get it back up and running. It is a beautiful building and well accommodated our young family of 6 + dog. They did call us ahead and warn that things were not quite there, yet, however, we were given about 12 hours notice that there was no running water and no restroom in the facility and we had committed to coming. Facilities were both in the bath house down the hill, closer than I anticipated. And they did offer a partial refund because it was not as described which did impact our trip: midnight toddler bathroom walks in the woods.
There is TONS to do at the location: kayaks, canoes, fishing, swimming (beware there is aquatic life and leeches), nightly bonfires and more in the Ely area. Much is provided, but you may want to bring your own because the upkeep of so many options is struggling. It is out of town but not out of the way, a good balance for us. There were lots of blankets and sheets and towels and firewood. The fridge really helped us because 10 camping meals with 7, 5, 3 & 1 is hard to swing.
Overall, a bit rustic, but fit our purposes marvelously. More "gl-amping" than actual tent camping, but closer to nature (and with more space) than a hotel. We would recommend it to others and had a great trip! Thank you for hosting us.
Yurt at a rustic, old style cabin campground outside Ely
Our family of three stayed for two nights when we needed to check in with another family member in Ely. The site is pleasantly situated on a small lake with lots of neighboring properties at a small, old style, rustic cabin campground. Well-loved canoes and kayaks available to launch at ease were our favorite aspect of our stay. Kind people running the site; doing their best to transition successfully to a new management model.
There were several surprises about this property that came up just before and during our stay. The yurt was damaged in a storm back in early June. We got a call a week ahead of our mid-August stay to let us know it was safe, but not up to the pictures. During that call we also learned that the property is actually run by a non-profit that serves youth from Chicago, who come to stay for some of the summer. We wondered on our drive there if it would be a very busy place after all? yet, it was quiet as only a few families were there when we stayed. Upon arrival, we learned that there was no running water nor was the toilet in the yurt any longer. We received a partial refund in light of these various compromises to the property. We appreciated the call and the adjustment to the fees, but it would have been good to hear sooner, so we could have made other plans. We were not looking for a summer campground vibe, but instead intended to have a quiet, spacious place to stay for a short time without much fuss.
We had two families that stayed in the Yurt, but the Yurt had experienced storm damage the week prior to our arrival. The property manager, Dan, and his crew made sure our accommodations were safe and appropriate for our group. They were completely accommodating so that our kids could enjoy this "wilderness" experience. You may find fancier lodging in the Ely area, but I doubt you will find a staff more eager to make your stay enjoyable. The nightly campfires and neighborhood cook-outs are truly "Minnesota Nice." They also provided kayaks, canoes, row boats, and fishing equipment to be used on this pristine Armstrong Lake. This was a great vacation for both of our families. We will be returning !
Incredibly beautiful, peaceful, full of activities, and welcoming hosts
Going in to this place and this part of the country for the first time blind was a bit unnerving, but from the first phone call to the first view, this place exceeded out expectations. 7 of us men stayed in the yurt, each with plenty of space and our own bed, and fully enjoyed the big deck, the wooded seclusion and the short trail to the gorgeous and seemingly empty lake. The kayaks, the boats, and the dock were full access and we took full advantage of all of those spaces with plenty of swimming, exploring, and fishing. Several fire pits illuminated most evenings, and we had a few people around constantly servicing water, towels and other items. The yurt was beautiful, and worth every penny. Showers were clean and warm, toilets worked just fine, and in short: this place is a slice of magic.
We endured two enormous storms, one that brought down several trees on the property! While this was terrifying, Dan, our host, was helpful, quick, and gracious. We certainly hope to return and make this part of an annual get together.
I highly recommend you make this a getaway.
If you want to camp in style!
This yurt is the place for you! The yurt is a very spacious and clean cabin with rustic convenience. The composting toilet was an experience but very easy to use. The gravity flow water was limited but better than having no water and full pressure sinks were available with hot and cold water just a short walk at the bathhouse.
There were box fans available in each bedroom and the central roof vent kept the temperature very pleasant for our whole stay. The kitchen was fully equipped with all of the tools we needed to cook four meals during our stay.
Know there is a short walk up to the yurt from parking but there is a very convenient hand cart to help with larger items like coolers or suitcases.
We stayed here as a multi-family group and found it to be an ideal balance of convenience all the while getting a full north woods experience. Plus the conversation at the larger group campfire was an unexpected bonus! We had a campfire the first night at our fire pit right outside the yurt but recommend going down to the big ring right by the lake to meet others staying at the resort.
The access to lake Armstrong was perfect and so beautiful! Fish were plentiful and kept the kids entertained for hours right on the dock! The available canoes and kayaks (and paddle boat) were in good repair and easy to launch. Wildlife was varied and beautiful with loons and bald eagles to watch.
Thank you for the lovely memories!
