Words cannot express how thrilled and happy we were to spend time at Wilderness Way.
The hosts, Dan and Jay, treated us well, took care of us, gave us treats, took us fishing, started the fire, provided memories that will last a lifetime. Simply put the best time ever
Authentic Northwoods Experience
We had the most pleasant of times in Loon Cabin at Wilderness Wind.
If you are looking for a rustic, but clean, friendly, and comfortable experience, this place is for you. Dan and Jay (some of the organizers), were communicative, friendly, had great suggestions for hiking, and extremely accommodating. They even lit a big fire for us each night at the spectacular lake-front fire ring.
The cabin was very cute (think Little House on the Prairie), exactly as pictured (actually cuter than pictured). Comfortable beds, filtered water, and well aerated, it's hard to imagine wanting more. The cabin, paired with the sandy beach front (rare for the Iron Range), and all of the free amenities (canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, life jackets, motorized speeding boat, fishing poles, etc.) was beyond perfect.
This place would be ideal for families, reunions, individuals, or couples. It has a convenient location outside of Ely, just a few miles away for the Bear Center, Wolf Center, and everything that downtown has to offer.
Disclaimer: I read some of the other reviews before posting mine, hoping to offer a fresh perspective. However, after doing so, it felt more prudent to address the negative reviews (which seem to only come from folks who did not do their research). The website is very transparent about the facilities offered at Wilderness Wind (videos included!!!!!!!). No, it's not a 5 star hotel, but that's precisely why we loved it! If you're looking for the authentic woods experience, but with the convenience of hot water, clean drinking water, electricity, and comfortable beds, this is the real deal.
Ultimately, we can't say enough about the weekend we spent at Wilderness Wind. We only hope that there will be enough availability for us to return next year.
Quiet Lake Spot
Just returning from a ladies weekend in the Loon cabin. It was right on the water with a great view. The cabin was rustic, cozy, and well equipped. Anything we didn’t have we found in the community areas, so we found the whole resort to be comfortable. Very laid back and relaxing spot to be be. It was easy to find and close to town for groceries or other entertainment to mix it up. Would definitely come back.
A true cabin experience!
We stayed at this cabin with our two small children and had a great time. It was very close to the water and we had access to kayaks, canoes, fishing poles, etc. The cabins do not have toilets, you must go to the shared bathhouse for that. (So depending on your camping style, this may not be a good option for you). I grew up tent camping and being outside, so this brought back a lot of great memories for me. :) The people who volunteer to run the camp are so nice and are willing to help with anything! Our fridge wasn't working and they took the time to go get a new one purchased and put in during our stay! Not only do you get to enjoy a relaxing time on the lake, but you are also giving back! I discovered this was part of a non profit that helps at risk youth in Chicago! Amazing! That made the experience that much better. If you are looking for an experience that has more of the camping feel, this is the place for you. :)
Rustic getaway perfect for relaxing
Really enjoyed our stay at Wilderness Wind. We stayed in the Loon Cabin (which is not a two bedroom as stated). When we arrived the power was out in the area due to strong storms that had come through the day before. That was not a big deal as we were essentially camping. We just had to make a couple of runs into Ely for ice. The cabin was cozy and the queen size bed was super comfortable. My friend opted to sleep on the couch as her first night in the bunk did not go well. Everyone at the campsite was super friendly, both the volunteers as well as other guests. Not a whole lot of extra noise which was so nice. We took the canoe out one evening, enjoyed the campfire and fireflies, and went on a hike to the Kawishiwi Falls east of Ely. Loved the sound of the Loons each morning and at dusk! Cell coverage was good for using maps or for posting pics. I really tried to stay off the grid on this trip. Jay and Dan were readily available and given this was the first year under new ownership, everything went well. Will definitely come back next year and hopefully get the Yurt to stay in. Thank you Wilderness Wild!
The old cabin was cute and has potential but the resort requires maintenance.
The care taker was very nice but they need to invest in updating their life jackets and thorough cleaning and maintainance of the cabins, bath house, equipment and grounds.
