We've vacationed in this gem of a coastal cottage on remarkable Vinalhaven Island for the past two summers and highly recommend it. First, if you're new to the island of Vinalhaven, beware: You might find yourself checking out of your rental vacation home and going straight to a realtor's office and ending up buying a house as my husband and I have done. It's that special of a place. We tourist summer people don't take over the island -- we mesh with the natural rhythms of the place...shopping for groceries in the one small but very well stocked family-owned market on Main Street, eating in restaurants alongside lobstermen and their families, meeting friendly locals at every turn, appreciating the 18th and 19th century structures and their history.
After a day swimming in the quarries, hiking in the lush nature preserves (many with breathtaking water views), or browsing art in New Era Gallery and eating and shopping in town (don't miss the lobster BLT at the food truck down near the ferry), you return to this comfortable, quiet, well-appointed cottage. Enjoy sunset on the deck, watching the tide come in and out of the cove you are just steps from. If you return to the cottage at dusk, an adorable wild rabbit is likely to be waiting for you by the door. (Really. I'm not making this stuff up, folks.)
While there is plenty to do all around Vinalhaven if you like to be active or to go into town (a short drive, and a do-able walk but it's a bit of a hike, so ideally you'll have a car), we found many a day in which we hardly wanted to leave the cottage. Sunshine dappling through the lace curtains in the bedroom is one of the most glorious ways to wake up. Then, you can step out and enjoy the spectacular flower gardens the owner has cultivated around the cottage. You might decide to take out the kayaks that await you at water's edge, or just to take out a good book and watch the water, the sky, the birds. And when you're hungry, the kitchen is incredibly well equipped with top-of-the-line appliances.
While we are excited now to have our own place on Vinalhaven, we will truly miss our stays in this cottage. We recommend it without an ounce of hesitation. Enjoy your stay!
What an amazing place! Vinalhaven Island is a little gem just off the coast of Maine. With scores of nature preserves bringing you to secluded spots teeming with wildlife, to the swimming quarries and quaint downtown, this place is magical.
Our stay at the cottage was just as magical. Situated right on a tidal basin, we spent each morning watching ospreys dive for fish, deer running across the flats during low tide and birds galore singing away. In the afternoons the girls kayaked around the basin (high tide) and had a cute little harbor seal swim along with them!!
Needless to say, we plan to come again next year! The owner was very thoughtful and helpful, and the cottage is clearly a prized possession. Immaculate inside and out, with beautiful hardwood floors and modern kitchen, this cottage instantly felt like home.
Just minutes from town, but feeling totally secluded, this cottage is a must-rent for anyone seeking quiet and a re-connection to nature. It is a treasured spot for artists or writers with it's inspirational beauty and solitude. The kids (14 year-old girls) enjoyed swimming in the quarries and exploring the shoreline, and even became comfortable with the slow pace of life on the island. This is not your typical summer community, there are limited dining options and a single grocery store. Likewise, there is no hustle-bustle, no tacky gift shops and no tourist traps. Everyone on the island is very approachable and helpful, and as you drive on the winding roads, EVERYONE passes with a wave. You immediately feel welcomed and a part of the island community.
One visit to this wonderful cottage and you will be sold for a lifetime....we certainly were!!
A first time visit to Vinalhaven was elevated to a personal best experience with this stay at this Maine Island Cottage. The setting was a constant visual show of tides, otters, eagles and rustic charm. A warm welcome was followed by an introduction to the delightfully furnished cottage with every imaginable amenity. Only classical music and conversation filled the times that we were not kayaking, cooking with a full compliment of utensils and serving dishes, or taking in the picture perfect scenery. Vinalhaven is a quintessential Maine experience, which was only made better by this exquisite rental property. The level of comfort at this cottage.was what a vacation should be when wanting to be spoiled and still feel "away". Even the lighting elements and decor made you feel as though you were in a residence where thought had gone into every element. Thank you for a stay that will be difficult to match.
We were more than pleased with our choice of this delightful cottage. Everything we needed was provided...and even more. It was close enough to town to be convenient, but far enough to feel like we were vacationing. Joel ensured we had everything necessary to be comfortable and secure. We highly recommend this lovely location if one wants to "experience" Maine.
My stay at this rental cottage was outstanding. I am a single New Yorker woman in my 30s and was in need of a writing retreat. Since I would need to work indoors, I was looking for an interior that was rustic but also upscale, and with a water view that "felt" like I was outside. The cottage is all that and more. It is all rustic wood on the inside, but the elegant post and beam structure and the high-end furnishings and kitchen give it a modern, high-end feel (if the Four Seasons were to build a small guest cottage in Maine it would replicate this!). And the front of the cottage, as you can see in the pictures, is ALL windows, so when you sit inside you feel like you are outside. It is cozy but the loft layout gives it a spacious feel. The hardwood floors are beautiful; the whole effect of the living room is not unlike the most beautiful yoga studio you've ever seen, which I turned it into a few mornings. Everything is well beyond what you would expect in a rental, especially the kitchen appliances and equipment. (The knife set is better than the Henckels set I have at home; the dishware, bowls, oversized coffee mugs all match and are what I would have bought for my own home.) The deck outside is of the highest quality and perfectly positioned to watch the cove change with the tide, the sun, the weather, etc.... it is always different. And while I have focused on the interior, the water view here is unbelievably amazing.
The location is not far from town, a short drive in for a strong cup of coffee at the ARCafe (don't miss the blueberry oaties) or a lobster roll at the Harbor Gawker (don't miss the crab biscuits, which are basically fritters) or a stroll through the New Era gallery (don't miss its amazing separate gallery building outside.) You will never see the whole island in a week, but the hike into the Basin off of Wharf's Quarry road and Lane's Island are not to be missed. Runs and bike rides up Calderwood Neck road are rolling hills that reveal water views at every turn. There are a few older bikes and a kayak available to use-- Vinalhaven must also be experienced from the water.
I can't recommend the cottage enough, especially as a writer's or artist's retreat.
Our stay at Vinal Cove was probably the best experience in all our years of renting vacation spots. The "cabin" was extremely well done with nothing but the best appointments inside. The view is so spectacular that we stopped calling it a million dollar view and started using the billion adjective.
Wendy and Joel were very accomodating and patiently relieved our angst about the ferry crossing since we constantly worried about even getting on the ferry at all. (Email me and I'll tell you all about it from a newcomer's standpoint.)
We hope to return on a regular basis and experience "island time" to its fullest.
