A Great Escape!

  • 5 de 5

This island getaway just an hour from New York City is like putting yourself inside a painting of a lush lake and charming Victorian-era white house with a huge wraparound porch. The house sits atop a beautiful hilltop with a panoramic view of the deep blue lake. Picture yourself with your morning coffee on this veranda while the lake shimmers in front of you. Or sunning on the dock below waiting to water-ski or swim. You'll never want to leave but if you need a break, restaurants and shopping are a quick boat ride across the lake. The house is meticulously clean and well-maintained; it is also charming and comfortable, with a fireplace in the living room and plenty of cozy bedrooms and sleeping spaces. A hiking trail that leads in a circle around the island is just steps from the back door. Halsey Island reminds you of the very private, stunning, rustic lakes and islands and deep woods near International Falls, Minnesota. But the drive to get there is only a matter of a few hours from many locations in the Northeast. I would recommend this exclusive vacation spot to all family and friends.

A Jewel on the Lake

  • 5 de 5

On this unique island retreat there are so many choices for your relaxation on vacation. Watch the weekend sailing regattas from the magnificent, huge front porch in your comfy rocking chair; jump off the diving board or use the fun slide on the huge dock; float or kayak in the pristine water; play volleyball, tether ball or crochet on the gorgeous grounds; toast s'mores by the fire pit ... all there for your enjoyment!

This unique, immaculate & lovely home is absolutely charming. It has all the amenities: fully-stocked kitchen, linens, towels, games, books, etc.

The owner was so friendly & responsive to all our questions and gave us helpful, detailed information regarding the use of her one-of-a-kind home.

My husband and I stayed a full month. We had frequent visits from family and friends who all marveled at how absolutely special this property was and is. We left with warm, wonderful memories!

A family vacation to remember

  • 4 de 5

Lynne's house on Halsey Island is delightful and I am happy to praise her stewardship of the house my grandfather built with his brothers as my great-grandfather (or, perhaps more likely, my great-grandmother) stood around and told them what to do.

Lynne has arranged to make it feel as if her tenants are merely borrowing her summer house with all the amenities and conveniences on hand.

As we were making our plans for this, our first rental of the property, family members kept asking me "should we bring sheets?", "should I pack toilet paper?" or "do we need to bring plates?".

I kept saying no and I was gratified when my family had to realize that, every now and then, I'm right :)

Lynne has plenty of sheets and towels (although she does ask you to wash them in the machines provided before leaving) and everything else. Even though one of us brought TP, we merely added it to the ample supply which was already there.

The refrigerator and pantry included those little staples that we all need like catsup (Heinz, the right kind) as well as a full spice shelf, sugar, salt, flour, etc.

And, I should not forget to mention, we had the assistance of Lynn's factotum both coming and going. Stephen met us at the marina with Lynn's boat when we arrived so we sent the big load of supplies and luggage across with him and delivered it all to the house so we didn't have to carry it up the 39 steps from the dock. And he took the lion's share of the load back to the dock when we left, coming over to be helpful both on our departure day and also in the middle of the week when he took us all on a tour of the lake.

Since my idea of a good time is to visit the local coin stores, I really didn't look at the brochures and guidebooks Lynn has about the nearby area but we really only went ashore to pick up the new arrivals and ferry back to shore the sorry-to-go departures.

Visiting with family on the porch, on the dock or around the firepit was a full time occupation with breaks only to play in the water or on the lake in Lynn's kayak or canoes.

And back at the house Lynn has a wide assortment of board games (we chose Monopoly for family fun) as well as lawn games (badminton, tether ball and croquet) for the more energetic younger set.

While I don't think I can afford to say that we're going to make this an annual vacation event, I bet we'll to contrive to do this again.

Privacy and peace in a pristine antique

  • 5 de 5

We fell in love with this place visiting over the long weekend.

Outside: You'd never know you were just an hour or so from Manhattan. The property is wooded and we couldn't see or hear neighbors at all. The privacy was unexpected, because the houses on the mainland are all crammed together.

With two little kids, I was beyond thrilled that the entire property was enclosed with 8' fencing. I could let them run around and didn't have to worry about where they were--they couldn't even get to the water without a help from a grownup. They played on the hammock, caught crickets, played hide-and-seek on the wrap-around porch, and overall just had a blast.

Inside: I've never been in an antique house as well-maintained or totally "untouched" as this one seemed to be. All the doors and windows were original (I asked the owner), as was the bead board on the walls and ceiling of every room in the house except the kitchen and one of the baths. The house is filled with antiques--but not the kind you feel you have to tiptoe around. Everything feels solid and the place is comfortable. The upstairs rooms have really nice carpeting and comfortable beds. The kitchens and bathrooms aren't what I would call "updated" or high end, but they're clean and just fine. All the appliances, dishes and cutlery seem new, and the house was stocked with some basics: milk, butter, coffee, salt, pepper, all kinds of spices, etc. We enjoyed cooking out on the barbecue, eating on the huge new picnic table (it could accommodate 12), and roasting marshmallows on the fire pit one night, too.

The lake: The kiddos loved the diving board and waterslide on the huge dock! They liked playing around in 1' of water at the beach equally well. We noticed the lake was much calmer on the weekdays--on the weekends the boats made choppy waves--but it didn't ruffle their feathers.

Other: the "drinkable" water comes from a well on the back of the property, and you actually have to pump it, old-school style. There is indoor plumbing, but the owner said to use the outhouse if we were planning on having guests over. In both cases, I was worried about the inconvenience or being creeped out, but the novelty ended up being cool. The outhouse was clean and didn't smell at all--and my kids actually preferred to use it! The well water was a treat to pump. We definitely felt like we were taking a step back in time.

Overall, it was a real treat, and we're looking forward to returning next year.

Resposta do proprietário: Thanks for the wonderful review, Traci! Yes, the charming two-seater outhouse is great and quite a conversation piece! The house septic system works well, but if a long lines form in the house, the "out" house is great to sneak off to. The system we use is known as a "cartage or bucket system", which means there is no hole in the ground and every deposit is "bio-filtered" with clean, organic sawdust. Glad you and the kids enjoyed the experience...and thanks for signing the outhouse guest book. See you next year! Lynne

Once in a Lifetime Indeed!

  • 5 de 5

We rented this wonderful home in late August through Labor Day. Our family of six - with four children under the age of 10 enjoyed every minute of our stay.

In anticipation of our vacation, I'd looked at the photos and descriptions of the house, property and lake many times. Nothing I saw compared to the reality of this unique getaway. It really is one of a kind.

The property is large, wooded, and well taken care of. The house itself is a historic wonder, full of interesting antiques and artifacts. It is meticulously clean, and everything we needed was provided. No amenity was spared. Our gracious host was even kind enough to have a lovely bottle of wine waiting for us on arrival.

As beautiful as the house and surroundings are, the very best part of our stay was spending endless hours on the huge, brand-new dock. The kids had an absolute ball swimming, jumping off the diving board or right off the dock, and slipping down the slide. They also spent a lot of time fishing - with much success to their delight! The kayak provided likewise provided many hours of enjoyment for everyone.

We rented a pontoon boat for part of our stay and really enjoyed exploring the lake with that. We also rented a dinghy from Dow's Marina, which was great to have as well. We were able to park our cars at the marina and it was our mainland point for buying bait, heading to the supermarket, out to eat, etc. Laurie and everyone at Dow's were lovely and very helpful to us during our stay.

At night we spent many hours on the large porch, marvelling at the beauty of the panoramic lake views. It was fun to imagine, while looking in at the cozy dining room, what people who stayed there in the early 1900s would be doing.

There is a wooded trail in the back of the house where you can see a number of deer up close. We enjoyed taking many walks back there. At night we made good use of the firepit to roast marshmallows and scare the bejesus out of the kids with spooky stories.

The owner of the house was lovely - very responsive and a pleasure to deal with. I had more than one twinge of envy during our stay that she gets to call this wonderful place her home! More than that, I was grateful that she was willing to share it with us.

We look forward to returning to Pinehurst in the years to come and highly recommend it to anyone interested in the perfect lake getaway.

Great Place For Boating, Relaxing and Life!

  • 5 de 5

We motored over from the marina where we had arranged to leave our car and trailer and got our first looks at the lake. There were several boats out but it wasn't too crowded even though a weekend. We rounded Halsey Island and saw the brand new huge dock and looked up at the beautiful 100 year old house and knew we were home for a few brief weeks. The stairs are tough, no doubt about it but after a couple of trips up from the boat to bring up our belongings (we brought way too much, pretty much everything you need is already there) we entered the house having gone through the full porch that circles the front and side of the magnificent house. You come through the dining room which has so many fun things on the wall (ducks, oars, antique lamps), a beautiful built in cabinet, large solid dining room table and generally a warm welcoming feel. The rest of the house had tons of antiques, old magazines from the 40's and 50's, original deed and plans for the islands and all sorts of interesting things. With a very well equipped kitchen, wifi, boathouse with fishing poles, an antique Cris Craft, life jackets, and pretty much everything you could hope for, there was little we lacked for. The bedrooms were large and comfortable. The most magnificent view can't be described, we spent every day marveling at the lake. Even on the day that we had thunderstorms we sat on the deck and watched the rain and lightning. Every day the kids swam off the dock and fishing was great! The slide and diving board privided hours of fun for all. The fire pit was a frequent source of relaxment at night. The central location on the lake was great, restaurants easily reached by power boat. Watching the sailboat races on Sunday mornings was a treat, so picturesque!

Couple of things to note, bring lots of drinking water, the well water wasn't great. Also, don't bring too much, the steps can be brutal if you're lugging needless things up to the house. Bring lots of books, great place to really unwind and catch up on your reading. The kids didn't miss tv - there are a couple of small TVs but no one ever turned them on - or video games.

But you can stay connected with the wifi if you need to stay in touch with your office. A short boat ride and you can get to stores and other restaurants. Make sure you tru the Jefferson Diner for a breakfast treat. The Main Mart on the lake has all sorts of souvenirs and we gassed up our boat there.

Definitely great!
