For our purposes this place was great, 5 stars, definitely, but it is not a 5 star hotel. It has a campy feel and quirks of an old cottage.
It was exactly what we wanted. Quiet, comfortable, homey, close to the busy and the quiet side of the park. The place was also in an area where we could walk our dog before heading out for the day's activities. There is a great trail up Acadia Mountain right from the front door too.
The description is accurate. The cottage is campy and does have character and a story, which is described in the welcome book left on the table for your arrival. Everything is not absolutley perfect, but eveything is there that you need.
The cottage was clean and well taken care of. At least one other reviewer mentioned a campfire outside. It now looks like it has not been used in a long time. I did not feel comfortable using it.
The owner was very helpful and also unabtrusive. After our visit, I wrote an email saying thank you, we look forward to coming back next summer, and gave a few suggestions to improve a guest's stay. The owner liked my responses and made the improvements.
We spent everyday in the park, on both sides.
We explored the towns on the quiet side one day and had a great lunch at Seafood Ketch in Bass Harbor. We sat outside with our dog and watched the harbor and lobster boats coming and going. When lobster was ordered, the chef went to the lobster dock right next door where lobstermen drop off their lobsters. He came back with lobsters that had been literally taken off a boat that was just docked. I highly suggest making a trip and getting some sort of lobster dish.
We always go into Bar Harbor to have dinner at Stewman's. Bar Harbor is very busy and parking is difficult to find. But the restaurant is by the water, near the docks and fun. It has great outdoor seating and allows dogs there.
My family and I were looking for a place to stay on Mt. Dessert Island, and we were lucky enough to find this great little cottage. It is small and comfy, just the right size for 5 adults and 1 toddler. It is two rooms with beds, and one large living room with dinning room (with extension leaf). Kitchen was great, and what we expected from a vacation home. The kitchen was well stocked with three different kinds of flour (!!!). Wireless connection, Netflix (for rainy days), great DVD collection.
Stephen was there to greet us when we arrived, gave us the ins and outs, and showed us a great trail near the house to climb to top of Acadia Mountain. It was not the 25 minutes he said, but it might have been the toddler that held us back.
Everything was well within reach. His guide to Acadia Park was great as he offered some quick and best ways to visit the park.
The cottage is really close to swim area (off of rocks, not beach) at Echo lake, and it was really beautiful.
I would recommend this cottage!
We have rented this house for the last six summers and plan to rent again this year. The house is centrally located and is fully equiped with everything you need for a comfortable and convenient stay on the Island. Bar Harbor and the "quiet side" of the Island aren't far away. Acadia Mtn and Echo Lake are within walking distance. Dog friendly, fully equiped and affordable makes it an excellent vacation value for us.
We stayed here at the end of the summer 2009. We had never used the internet to book a private rental before, so we were a little leery of what we would find. Were we pleasantly surprised! The home sits in a very quiet, but not isolated area. The house is older, but it was meticulously clean and it had a pleasing fresh scent upon entering. I am very sensitive to offensive odors(smoke, pets, mildew, etc), so much so that I came with my own bucket of cleaning supplies and Febreeze, which I never had to use. My husband really enjoyed the front porch where he drank his coffee each morning while listening to the quiet. The kitchen was stocked with everything you need. We also enjoyed the fire pit out back, and the kids(we have 4) loved walking through the back yard. Overall, the home had a cozy, friendly feel to it with several small touches that made it homey. Such as, a recipe for blueberry muffins on the fridge and a hand-written welcome note on the table. Yes, we would recommend this rental to a friend. This rental really deserves a "very good" rating.
The good: This cabin is in a very convenient, and quiet location. It has a washer, and dryer. It has a lovely, large deck with comfy lawn furniture, which we really enjoyed. Kitchen is fully equipped and clean, as is the full bath. The bad: Dirty old shag carpet. One musty smelling bedroom. No central heat, as advertized. No railing to help get up two very high steps, that went down to the bedrooms. I am 65, and 5' tall, I am very agile, and have good knees, but the steps were difficult. I was afraid of falling on them. The ugly: The sagging, low bedroom ceilings, and the mouse droppings on the kitchen counters in the mornings, after we had cold nights. These problems are an easy fix. I did not like this cabin, but we could not afford to leave and rent another place. Acadia, and the ocean were amazingly beautiful. P.S. Cabin owner, Wrote a quote: We were all related to plants and animals ,etc. We dont agree, and dont want these world views shoved down our throats. B & B
A good deal for a family of four. A short drive to several quaint villages, hiking trails, lakes and ocean. Nice star gazing off the deck. It was great having the washer and dryer too.
