Our first visit to the trulli-area has been trully fantastic. We loved the breathtaking views, small villages and good food and wine. Our accommodation Trullo Fantastico really deserves its name; quite, pleasant, comfortable and relaxing. We decided to return this summer to re-enjoy Puglia in all its beauty: strongly recommendable!
As a tourist destination, Puglia has had a recent revival and rightly so. My lovely companion and I made our way from Naples Airport to the beautiful coastal town of Trani on the Adriatic coast. Lunch, then down to the harbour to see the local fishermen returning with the day's catch and setting up their stalls. Residents buying their supper, amazing sight. Then on to our destination the Trullis Fantastico just outside the town of Castellanno. We were welcomed like old friends and were soon made at home. The property has been renovated with considerable love and attention to detail and is wonderful. Think Manhattan chic with a lot more sun. Surrounded by groves of olives, walnuts and cherries, the views from the pool were of uninterrupted beauty. If you were wanting to get away from this paradise then we would recommend the caves at Casttenanno, the seafood at the coastal restaurants and the Unesco World Heritage Site of Alberrobello, a feast of Trullis that not only are homes to the local residents, both a plethora of bars and shops that make you wish you'd brought more than one credit card! The local wine-Primativo is a perfect match for supererb home made pizza as well as perfectly cooked seafood. We made the most of it. You should too.
Trulli Fantasico. Truly amazing. We can't recommend it highly enough
For our holiday in Puglia we flew from London via Rome to Brindisi. Picking up the car outside the small but perfectly formed terminal we headed north and soon had the sea on our right. The weather was wonderful, the roads weren’t busy and having “Flown” the journey by Google Earth we soon left the main road and headed up into the hills and the heart of “Trulli” country. We soon saw these charming conical houses set in the midst of olive groves along the road. Some newly renovated and others just waiting for someone to love and renovate them.
Within an hour from the airport we were pulling in through the electric gates of “Trullo Fantastico”. Surrounded by olive groves and cherry orchards we saw our stone and whitewashed trullo with the outside terrace, ample parking space and the pool glittering just behind. The view back down the mountainside from the pool area was magnificent.
We entered through the kitchen /diner and followed the hall down to the sitting room, with another door to the terrace and dominated by the high central dome that is the main architectural feature of a trulli. The central light fitting was impressive. Moving on we found the two bedrooms. Both were spacious and well-appointed, the master with ample storage and luxurious shower room and the second bedroom again with storage and finally the main bathroom. The whitewashed walls and tiled floors meant that the inside was light but cosy.
Newly renovated to an extremely high standard with contemporary tiling, flat screen TV’s, DVD’s, books, audio equipment, we soon made ourselves at home. Gaby, the agent, had promised us a well-planned holiday retreat and as we sat by the pool with the first of many Prosciutto’s we relaxed and agreed wholeheartedly. The kitchen is well planned with everything you need to cook effectively for the four of us or prepare barbeques which we did as the weather was great.
Close by are villages with shops and markets for everyday shopping and the leisurely way of life and the friendliness of the people enabled us to try out our poor Italian. We visited Alberobello which is magical with hundreds of trulli winding up the narrow streets to the church. We sat at a café enjoying the selection of food on offer watching the world go by. In fact we spent the entire holiday exploring fish restaurants, family run restaurants and restaurants on the sea shore all within easy travelling distance of the trullo. We went to Bari, about an hour away, and explored the promena
We were a party of 4 who stayed. The property looked just like the pictures and is a mix of the traditional on the outside and inside walls ( lovely stone) and all the mod cons wifi, flatscreen to etc.
Comfortably sleeps 4 but could be 6 with sofa bed. Everything we needed was there and the property was clean and tidy. Located in the country there is peace and quiet but surrounding towns close by.
Had terrific antipasto meal at Gliulvi in Alberobello and very long linch at Taverna da Santos in Martina Franca. Otherwise we BBQ'd in the evenings.
Lots to see and do in the area and only an hour or so from Bari and Brindisi airports. The manager was very helpful when we realised we'd left something on the plane as none of us had enough Italian to ring the airport!
All in all a great trip. You could have days of exploring and days lounging by the pool. Would recommend it and intend to return
It lives up to its mane of Trullio Fantastico!!!
