I was a little nervous about renting a home for the weekend and wasn't quite sure what to expect. The house was wonderful and had a very cozy, home like feeling. The upstairs bedroom had a comfortable bed and a half bath and the downstairs bedroom was perfect for kids. The living room had a pull out couch that could have been a little more comfortable but it was still nice. The kitchen was perfect and convenient. Eating out wasn't necessary because a full kitchen was available with pots and pans, a coffee pot, microwave and toaster, and a dishwasher. The deck was very spacious and all eleven of us were able to hang out together on it.
My only suggestions for this cottage would be a softer bed for the pull out couch.
The area was perfect. You could walk to the beach in minutes. At the beach there was a restaurant, a park for the kids, and a lot beautiful sand in your toes. The water was amazing, and this being my first time to Lake Michigan, I was very pleased. There are plenty of near-by stores in case anything was forgotten. There was a meijer, walmart, and a lot of places to eat.
Over all this was a perfect place to stay and I will definitely come back and enjoy this place again.
The owners were very nice. The cottage was very musty, though. I have mold allergies, which fired up when we had to be in the cottage, especially when we had to close windows and doors for rain.
Pluses: nice owners and well stocked; great, great, great pizza ( Verdonis); great food (Hearthstone Bistro); can walk to Lake Michigan beach. WWII US submarine is a short drive away. Our son loved it. WWII US Navy LST landing craft is close, too. Our son loved that as well. Michigan's Adventure amusement park with some great rides is nearby. Area is fairly affordable. Three of us got into Michigan's Adventure for less than $100. A round of golf is as little as $20 for eighteen holes. Grand Rapids and three good malls are an hour or less away.
Cons: musty; neighborhood is a mix of nice homes, cottages, and disheveled shanties and or yards. You have to driveby a big industrial destruction to get to the place. Muskegon is not a very happening place. There's no central resort town area like South Haven or Saugatuck. Thus, there's not much to any nice area to stroll through or browse or sit and people watch. It's a work town that happens to have some beach, too.
The owner, Sandy, was very nice to deal with and easy to talk to. She was able to accommodate us on short (2 Days) notice with no problem, which was very appreciated.
The house was very nice, with lots more character than you would get with a hotel room. Many items were included like: WiFi (much appreciated to keep the extended family up to date with the fun we were having), bathroom towels, bed linens, common food condiments (ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper, etc.), grill (with charcoal), silverware, pots and pans, and cooking utensils. The kids even found a Nintendo Gamecube that we hooked up and played a little. This was a big help in keeping our packing of everything and the kitchen sink to a minimum.
Only complaint is the master bedroom is upstairs and is a decent size (not a bad thing at all, even the bed was pretty comfortable), but the second bedroom is on the ground level (2 floors down from the master bedroom). That didn't go well with our kids (2, 5, and 7 years old). So we hauled the futon mattress and twin mattress up into the master bedroom and placed them on the floor. There was enough room in the master bedroom to do this fine. That worked great in our case, but may not for everyone. With older kids, I would assume a farther away second bedroom may not be as much of a problem.
The place was pretty clean, and we tried to leave it that way when we left. The biggest problem being spiders and their webs. Mainly outside, but a few did find their way inside. With all the trees and cover around I assume that is the price to have a house tucked in the trees and off the road a little bit. The driveway for the house is easy to drive past because the house is set back further than some others on the road. Not really a bad thing, just something that takes some time and few trips past it to get used to.
Lake Michigan's beautiful beach is within walking distance, but with nice parking right by the beach we decided to drive about 1/2 mile to the play area of the beach with a playground for the kids and stayed there. We did not try Muskegon Lake beach area, but it was closer than Lake Michigan and more reasonable walking distance also.
Overall, I would gladly stay here again. Thanks Sandy!
