Before we arrived at the house we had received really helpful information about the house and journey from the owners. First impressions upon arrival did not disappoint; an imposing building set in beautiful countryside with an amazing pool right by the house.
We were met by Leon who showed us around and helped sort out bedding etc. Upstairs there are four good sized bedrooms, two with enormous ensuite bathrooms and a separate wc. Downstairs there is an enormous and well-equipped kitchen with an adjoining utility room and wc. There are then three reception rooms, one with a tv/DVD. This was ideal for our party as it meant that teenagers could have some space away from the oldies!
Outside there is a gas bbq and large outside dining area, the beautiful pool with plenty of chairs and the barn where we loved playing table tennis in the shade.
The area is definitely rural and quiet. Simorre is a lovely village with a great boulangerie and a small supermarket for provisions. We also liked Saraman which is slightly larger and has a couple of restaurants/cafes. We used the large supermarket in L' Isle en Dodon which is a bigger town with a few restaurants etc. Visited Auch and the market in Samatan which was enormous!
We had a great week and were sorry to leave. Mostly enjoyed chilling out in the sunshine and eating and drinking too much! A perfect holiday if you want to relax and enjoy a luxurious house in the country.
We stayed at La Daranne for two weeks in August 2015. Our party ranged in age from seven to 82, and the holiday was throughly enjoyed by all. The house is in a beautiful rural location set amongst sunflower fields and rolling hills. The house does stand at the junction of two minor roads, but occasional traffic noise was not unduly intrusive.
The house is decorated and furnished to a high standard, with a particularly well-equipped kitchen. The house is spacious inside and was spotlessly clean when we arrived. The garden and pool area are very nice, and the barn offers welcome shade when the weather is hot. We found the owner to be very helpful when making the booking etc, and her local representatives who live nearby were equally helpful during our stay.
The area is beautiful. We generally did not venture far, but enjoyed visiting nearby towns - such as Samatan, L'Isle en Dodon and Boulogne - on market day. For a longer day out, we would recommend the Pic du Midi - a cable car that takes you over 3000m into the Pyrenees.
Overall, we would highly recommend La Daranne and would gladly return. We have stayed in many holiday properties in France and elsewhere; La Daranne is among the best we have encountered.
We found a lovely large traditional farm house which has been immaculately modernised, fully equipped for a couple of families, with a beautiful large pool, barn and garden, all set in the stunning countryside of the low hills mounting towards the Pyrenees - with deliciously clean air. Local valley fields are interspersed with lovely oak forest. We had the most relaxing time watching tractors with our toddler and reading under the huge pool umbrellas. In fact there are lovely walks locally, fascinating little bastide villages to visit, wonderful local markets - and a UNESCO site in Auch - we even made it to Spain to see the curious Station at Llanfrac - a vast disused edifice built in 1928. Our most popular day out was to elegant Pau with its balcony views of the Pyrenees but we were always happy to return to our roost in Gaujan with the geese and cows up the hill as our nearest neighbours, Our local contact Ruth was full of good info and the house was immaculate when we arrived. Although not far off the road, there is so little traffic passing that it took us a while to adjust to living back in London! Sorting out when the nearest bakeries (6km) were open took us a while - country living needs a bit of getting used to after our 24/7 existence here - but we got the hang of things and can't wait to go back - the sunflowers must be fantastic in July. They were being harvested at the beginning of September and the fields harrowed, ploughed and planted for next year.
A short hop from the Airport (50 mins), we made our way through bright sunshine to the House. It was a real eye opener and massively exceeded the pictures on the web page. Well maintained and absolutely huge..
There was lots of nice places within the ground floor rooms to hide from the sun.
The kitchen was well equipped for anything we wanted to cook and big enough to seat us all at meal times. The fridge is very large and needs to be.
The beds were clean and comfortable. We took the advice on Bugs and Mosquitoes so the rooms were cool and very comfortable. The mattresses looked new and clean.
The en-suite shower was brilliant and very clean with a bath, so big, you hold a party in it.
Lots of Ghekos that never bothered us.
The pool area was clean and well cared for. we had a small issue with the PH level , the pool went cloudy after a storm. Derek immediately got a local chap to sort it out so no down time. The equipment is modern and quiet with a robot to clean the pool.
We had planned lots of excursions for the children but they spent nearly all their time in the pool. Saved me a fortune..
Wifi was a must and worked really well. No major cell signal drop off.
The locals were very kind and would offer lifts from the village to home.( I was helped in the local market, linguistically, by one lady who gave me a lift on my way home.)
Really good coffee most mornings at the town cafe.
Big super markets a short drive away and busy market day each week.
A car is a must as you are in the middle of a sea of sunflower fields and little else. The roads are quiet and apart from from a few honking geese there was no noise at all. Heaven.
There were 5 of us and there was room for lots more.
The whole experience, the standards and the service was excellent.
The only negative was that the cost of the restaurants and market food was definitely more than the UK. The wine however, from the Cave, was really good and very inexpensive.
As a runner I was spoiled by the mad amounts of quiet roads and hilly or flat terrain.
We had a great time and have raved about the place since our return.
Would we go again?. A big yes, budgets permitting.
I would be happy to recommend in person if anyone is keen for more information. I don't know how that would work but I would be happy to do it.
My family and I would like to, again, Thank Derek(especially for the loan of his hat) and Corjanne for a lovely stay. We hope to go back in 2015.
