Adequate accommodations, lacking the special touch

There's something about this unit that left us disappointed, but it is hard to pin down. My opinion is the unit and building are accurate as described in the listing. Photos were accurate. The multi-page email the owner sent after confirming the reservation provided good information about the condo and surrounding area. Check-in was easy, and we felt safe and secure while in the unit and on the grounds. We did have a maintenance issue in the unit which was handled promptly and professionally within an hour. There was an emergency water cut off to the building while we were there that was communicated in the elevators 48 hours in advance. Window cleaning occurred with notice. There was a railing construction project going on as well that we discovered through another listing, but it did not affect our stay. In all, the unit met most of our expectations. Our disappointment stemmed from two areas of the unit that we expected to be clean. We know we could have called the cleaning company to rectify this, but we didn't have confidence in the housekeeping, so we took steps ourselves to ensure items were clean. First, the kitchen supplies. We had fully expected to have dinner in the unit most nights and expected clean and well-maintained utensils and pots and pans. Instead, we ran almost everything in the kitchen through the dishwasher before we used them. Some items had dried leftover food on them, some of didn't look clean, and the pots and pans had enough knicks and scratches that we were concerned to use them. The appliances were clean and functional, but overall we just didn't feel this was a well-maintained kitchen. Rusted bottoms of pots, cuts in the saute pans, and a filthy drying rack. Would calling the company to re-clean the kitchen would have been sufficient to make us feel better? I don't think so. I don't want to harp on this too much, but it really did affect our stay. Second item was the air vents in every room. They appeared dirty - upon closer inspection it appeared it was a mix of dust and chipped paint. Took some paper towels to them, which helped but still appeared dirty. On the positive notes, we enjoyed the pool area, the public spaces were clean, parking was fine, and the location was very convenient to the area. We saw whales, sea turtles, fish, and dolphins from the amazing windows. Overall, four stars, with one star deducted for the cleanliness concerns. I think we would seek other accomodations next time in town.

Over the past 14 years, since 2004, we have received 142 reviews (138 are 5 star) and not one guest has ever complained about cleanliness. On the contrary, during this time we have received only compliments on the cleanliness that our excellent cleaning company provides, who is the premier maintenance company in West Maui. We are also quite mystified that you considered calling the cleaning company to re-do the kitchen but did not, stating, “Would calling the company to re-clean the kitchen would have been sufficient to make us feel better? I don't think so.” We are mystified you did not call them as they would have promptly come over and taken care of any issues you would have had. You also did not notify us about this problem and we, also, could have easily made sure your issue was taken care of in a timely manner. After all, in your review, you admitted quite accurately that we do take care of problems immediately. We take great pride in the maintenance of our condo and replace any and all damaged equipment with inspections on a regular basis to protect our investment and to make our guests’ vacations the most enjoyable and comfortable possible.

Bill and Dondi's Condo in Kanapali

We have been to Maui many times and stayed in many wonderful places including the Westin and Honua kai right next door. I have to say, this was easily the best views we've every had. Bill and Dondi's condo was also a little more spacious than any of the others. We always travel with our dear friends and require two master suites. The condo was perfect for us. We went in late February through early March to watch whales. With binoculars, we could see whale activity every day, all day long from the condo. Also, and most important, Bill and Dondi were very easy to contact and work with. They are very nice people. We do hope to come back soon.

A Fabulous Maui Experience

We had been staying at the Kaanapali Beach Club the last several years, but the game with pre-reserving lounge chairs got to us, so we decided to check out the Mahana. We rented 1109 for 9 nights, and it was a wonderful experience. The condo was spotless and very well appointed. It is just inches from the ocean and above the palm trees, so the views are excellent.

There are many wonderful amenities such as a washer/dryer, binnoculars, full kitchen, and more. The artwork is very elegant and natural as well. We were very comfortable. The master bedroom is also right on the ocean.

The grounds at the Mahana are very nice, and it's very quiet there. The people were friendly. Although the hot tub was under repair a few days, we still enjoyed having loungers right near the ocean and there was no shortage of lounge chairs. The sun doesn't come around until very late morning, so there was a little juggling with moving around.

There were just two of us, but this unit would be comfortable for four people with separate bathrooms.

It's a great location and the lanai is very private. We felt like we had our own little piece of Kaanapali.

what a view!

It looks just like the pictures (spectacular)--and even the second bedroom has a gorgeous view of the Maui hills. Excellent use of space, plenty of dishes and glassware (that match!), comfortable bedding and seating. Pool is small, but uncrowded, with pleasant seating and adequate shade; a fantastic beach starts at the south end of the property, and there's good snorkeling about a 15 minute stroll down the boardwalk. Perfect location with quick access to options for dining out without struggling through Lahaina traffic at "rush hour". I don't know how anybody could rate this place anything but 5 stars (and almost nobody does).

Best unit on the property!

We reserved this beautiful unit Dec 16-23rd. Thank you for allowing us to stay in your fantastic property. Your instructions for check in, codes, and check out procedures were very clear and were seamless. We have previously stayed in 2 other units in the Mahana so we were familiar with many of the details but if you were a first time guest, the communication would make the process so much more relaxing.

Everything in the unit was in perfect working order and great condition. We were so happy to find a nice beach towels, chairs, a cooler, and the boogie boards in the unit for use.

As always, the views from the Mahana can’t be beat. The views from your unit cannot be matched or compared to the other units we have stayed in. The ocean views from the kitchen, living, and master bedroom and the mountains from the 2nd bedroom are fantastic.

The unit was clean when we arrived and stocked with a broom, small vacuum, and a good supply of trash bags and dish soap. I truly appreciated the good supply of towels, washcloths, hand towels, and kitchen towels.

Thanks again for the smooth transaction and the use of your beautiful unit. If we are blessed enough to return to Maui, I would not hesitate to do another transaction with the owners or stay in this unit again.

Fantastic week at Mahama!

Just arrived back in NZ from a fantastic holiday in Maui staying at Bill and Dondis apartment at The Mahama. We took our two adult sons with us as we had stayed in Maui a few years earlier and knew they would enjoy it! The apartment was amazing - everything was absolutely spotless. There are plenty of extra necessities provided in the kitchen area and an array of boogy boards and chairs etc for use on the beach. The views were to die for and there was plenty of room for all of us to relax and enjoy the amazing surroundings. The facility has a pool and spa which isnt crowded unlike alot of resorts nearby, There are good beaches on either side of the Mahama which are only a short walk away - however because there is a reef directly in front of the Mahama - this is great for snorkeling. Dukes restaurant is only a short walk away and across the road there is a great supermarket and takeaway restaurants. You can even purchase movies at the supermarket which came in handy on a couple of nights.

I would totally recommend this condo for a family or two couples - in perfect surroundings and close to all facilities. A big thanks to Bill and Dondi for a great condo!
