Beautiful Family or Romantic Getaway
The home and property are much more lovely in person than the photographs can possibly show. There are lots of books, many about Maine topics like sailing and DIY living, but also some spirituality and some good literature. The home is adorned with homemade pottery and drawings/paintings from Keith or his family, which give a cottage feel, like you stepped back in time.
The TV has movies on DVD and old VHS, which was so fun for us. Even using a "house" phone was so interesting.
Every window looks out to something wonderful: the pond, wildflowers, trees. All is green and it is perfect.
Prettymuch anything you could want was in the house or available. I highly recommend this place!
We love coming back to this charming house
My son and I love visiting this house, for two summers now. We arrive after a long drive from southern Connecticut to DownEast Maine, and adore the fairy lights that illuminate the walk to the front door. Fresh wildflowers and soft jazz music from the radio graced the kitchen on our arrival. The house has always been clean and tidy on our arrival. The decor, the owner-made pottery throughout, the artwork, all made this a wonderfully comfortable place to spend the week.
We took full advantage of the grill outside, the swim float and dock, the Adirondack chairs by the water, and the kayaks. We loved seeing the loons on the lake and the eagle flying overhead. We went blueberry picking across the road, and picked enough for dessert and blueberry pancakes. We love the comfort and solitude of the house and the lake. We always feel as though we were staying in a friend's home, rather than a sterile rental.
We shop for groceries in Ellsworth, but get vegetables, lobster, and fish from roadside stands in Franklin between the house and the center of town. We love going out to the farmers' market in Winter Harbor, as well as the events at the Schoodic Peninsula Arts Festival which goes on all summer. For lobster we go to The Galley on the Bridge, in Sullivan. We can also go onto Mount Dessert Island, but I like visiting places away from Acadia, as I spent a lot of time there as a kid.
Summer isn't complete without a week at the house on Georges Pond. I highly recommend this house.
Wow..I love Maine!!....
...And this was the perfect place for our family of four to stay and explore! The house was very comfortable and clean and decorated lovely with birdhouses, teapots, and antiques. We made great use of the bikes, kayaks, canoes and of course the blueberry fields. The only thing is it was not nearly enough time!
All the books, puzzles and games were a great treat. If you are the indoor type the house would leave you enough things to do by itself! The choice of books is great! Rained a couple mornings but cleared off really nicely and never knew it had rained by mid morning. We spent one day in Acadia NP and day @the sand beach looking for shells and enjoying the views after eating lunch on top of Cadillac Mountain overlooking Bar Harbor .... Beautiful!
The next day we- my son and I went on the whale watching cruise and it was canceled because of the fog so we changed our tickets for the next day and saw whales and other sea life- things the guide was great about pointing out!! My husband and daughter went to Jordan Pond that day and could not say enough positive things about it... which of course means my husband and I are already talking about another trip ....
Keith was very nice and very helpful in directing us of the "goings-ons" in the area....We even saw Keith on our way out Saturday morning @ the Wild Blueberry Breakfast... which was yummy!!!
My son, who is 16, was kept very busy doing other activities while we were at the house as there was no internet signal...and said it wasn't a problem... He went biking and kayaking and also went swimming one day... however he thought it was too cold. We also started a puzzle but did not get it finished as it was a larger one and the pieces were not all there.
The grill was great to have on the deck. We grilled chicken one evening and had salad and potato salad. And then for desert had cheesecake with wild blue berries we had picked that day...!! :>)
On our last night there we went to Ruth and Wimpy's and had AWEsome lobster!! It was the last night of their July special as well... 9.95 for lobster and corn...It was a good thing we got there early- about 4:30, as the place filled up quickly
and then the line got long! - The deserts were also out of this world!!
The patio set on the deck did not have seats on them and did not find them til we were cleaning up. We may've sat out there a little more but the mosquitoes were bad and we kept forgetting a citronella candle.
Peaceful Week in Maine
PROS: This is a charming house--the owner's love of nature and handcraft gives it lots of personality. It had plenty of room for us and our 2 kids. The lakefront setting is beautiful. The lake is clear and clean, and small enough to easily explore in a kayak or canoe (provided by the owner). The resident loons were a big plus! The photos accurately depict the home and its setting. Appliances worked well and were clean (funky washer/dryer location in the basement, but they worked just fine).
Another huge plus--Acadia National Park is about 45 minutes from the house, and you can easily reach other coastal destinations via route 1.
CONS: The owner did not clean the house between guests, but asked the guests to vacuum. We cleaned the bathrooms ourselves; not sure if anyone cleaned them before we got there. We've never rented a vacation place that was not cleaned before our arrival, and thought that this was an odd arrangement. The house was certainly tidy when we got there, however.
The owner provides bicycles, and the road around the lake is pretty. But cars drive fast on that narrow road, and there are no shoulders. So we didn't think it was safe for us and our kids. Too bad--we would have enjoyed a bike ride. There is a rails-to-trails path close by, but you have to bike the narrow roads to get to it, and it is also used by ATVs.
Do your grocery shopping in Ellsworth before you get to the house--there are no stores in Franklin.
There is no cell phone service at the house (unless you go out into the blueberry fields across the street). You may use the house phone for a nominal charge. (If you're there in mid-August, as we were, make sure you get to those blueberry fields and feast!)
We ate breakfast at the Riverside Cafe on the main street in Ellsworth a couple of times--delicious and a real nice atmoshere.
My 12-year-old son wants me to mention the go-kart track at Wild Acadia Fun Park, on Route 3 heading toward Acadia. There are also several tasty ice cream stands along that stretch.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this house for a peaceful family vacation. Just be prepared to do some housecleaning when you get there and when you leave.
I will make sure the house is clean before you arrive IF I am not at a weekend art show. I began having guest vacuum and clean up after themselves when I was away on the weekend and have had happy visitors. Why not hire a cleaning person? I just felt, in these times vacationers might appreciate a lowering of rent instead of raising it. Hope to see you soon, Keith Owner
