My wife, myself and 3 other couples visited this beautiful home October 4th thru the 7th, 2016. I cannot say enough good things about this property and property owner Ellen. The views are fantastic. The home and cottage was very clean and comfortable. We visited some quaint towns not far from this location and enjoyed the beauty of the Maine coastline as well as the outstanding restaurants. We purchased six 2 ½ pond lobsters at the near lobster co-op for $7.50 lb and boiled them in the large pot and propane pot cooker supplied by Ellen. Boiled them up in the sea water we got at the dock near the home. They were absolutely delicious. I think my favorite activity was just hanging around the evening fire with our friend and reminiscing about our day. Ellen could not have been a better host by keeping in contact from the day we booked to the day we left. She was gracious enough to accept our invitation for a glass of wine by the fire on our final night. What a wonderful person she is. Thank you Ellen we all had a fantastic time in Maine.
When we searched for rental properties in the mid-Coast Maine area we found several but this property caught our fancy because of its location, size, and amenities. We booked it, drove 11 hours to get there (from northern VA), found it with no problem and were entranced from the moment we saw it. This house has character, and a setting that is postcard perfect. The house appears to have been built in the early 1900s with rooms added later. Its many rooms are decorated in a delightful combination of victorian and country antique styles, with interesting furniture and books everywhere. There are plenty of comfortable chairs in every room but our favorite place for sitting and reading is what we called the sunroom, where floor to ceiling windows look out on the yard and the water. Adjacent to the sunroom is the kitchen which is large with modern appliances and enough dinnerware and cutlery to feed an army; the adjacent formal dining room has a table that seats eight. The first floor is complemented by a wrap-around porch on the west and north sides of the house. The upstairs has four bedrooms and a bathroom (shower; no tub). There is a separate apartment with a kitchen connected to the house, but we did not rent it. The setting for the house is spectacular. It sits on a bluff overlooking the Sheepscott River (which looks more like a bay) where seals, lobster boats and sailboats provide an ever-changing tableau. The yard has picnic tables and a fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs. We enjoyed sitting in (OK -- having a drink in) those chairs feeling the almost constant breeze -- and having to put on sweaters in the evening even though it was summertime. One other aspect of this property made us happy: it was very quiet. No noise from neighbors and no traffic on the road in front of the house; in fact, we rarely saw a car on that road. Ellen Goodman, the owner, was most gracious. She not only welcomed us with fresh flowers and a nice note, she came immediately when we could not get the TV to work. Ellen gave us a list of places she recommends for all manner of activities available in the mid-coast area, from dining (don't miss the lobsters!) to boat trips to beaches to botanical gardens, and on and on. We did most of them. Our most memorable excursion was the whale watching trip out of Boothbay Harbor because we saw many finback whales. We enjoyed our stay, and hope to return in a coming summer.
This home is every bit a gorgeous, idyllic Maine experience. Ellen is a sensational host and truly made our stay stress-free. The pictures do not do this home justice. It is loaded with charm, space, and everything you need for a relaxing time. We had my much of my immediate family staying (15 people) that drove or flew in from 4 different states. We used the main home as well as the cottage. Both absolutely comfortable, loaded with necessary amenities and sensational views. We rented kayaks, which were delivered, ordered lobsters from the co-op for our boil, got in great morning runs, fishing, reading and even got to see seals. Don't pass this house up. Side note: If you can rent a boat I suggest that to get to experience boating to other islands. It is a great location that offers tons of privacy, yet stores and restaurants are all within a short drive that is both beautiful and simple. We look forward to returning next summer!! Thank you, Ellen for being so wonderful to us and helping me create an amazing trip for my family.
My family of 9, including 3 children, stayed at Ellen's house in early August. I can only echo all the superlatives others have expressed. The house has such character, and the setting is truly gorgeous. Beautiful vistas, perfect for watching the sunrise, the sunset, and for just enjoying all day in the adirondack chairs. We rented a kayak for the week, which only added to the experience. The cheery sunroom was the perfect spot to hang out; the bedrooms were charming. The boys dubbed the room off the living area the "nap room" because whenever you went in there, someone was napping in the sunlight! We spent most of our time enjoying the house and yard - the grandchildren ( 11, 8 and 16 months) had plenty of room to play and explore. The dock and surrounding rocks offered more than just a launching spot for the kayak- the kids fished, crabbed, and discovered various creatures hiding in the seaweed. Everything was so appealing that we spent lots of time at the house - venturing out for lobsters, of course. I would especially recommend Five Islands Lobster Pound on the Georgetown peninsula -- another stunning setting, with lobster boats coming in and out, and families motoring in on their boats to sit at the picnic tables on the dock and swoon over the lobster. Popham beach was another big hit - the sandy beach seemed to extend forever - the water was chilly, but not frigid. Beware of the seagulls, though. They are quite brazen and swoop in to take food right out of your hands. The firepit was a source of great fun, especially for the grandsons. They made a bonfire every night and roasted so many marshmallows for s'mores that I'm not sure I can ever eat another one. Sitting around the fire watching beautiful sunsets and seeing the delight of the grandkids was a pure joy. I also want to say that Ellen's graciousness, responsiveness and helpfulness made our stay at Vintage Cottage extraordinary. I can't say enough about what a pleasure it was to work with her on making the arrangements and then experiencing in person how lovely she is. When the weather turned quite hot I asked for some additional fans for the bedrooms - they were on our doorstep within an hour or two. She guided us to the best beaches for kids, made multiple suggestions about lobsters and activities, and responded with great kindness to a misadventure by the boys. Definitely a gem........... I would highly recommend this home without any reservations - it was just great.
My sister booked this storybook house for our Dad's 70th birthday. The house slept all 12 of us, without feeling cramped or crowded. The view alone would have been worth the entire trip. From the back of the house, you can see fog rising off the water in the mornings, seals playing in the water, lobster boats, occasional harbor porpoises (we think that's what that was) and INCREDIBLE views of sunsets and sunrises. There's a firepit. And the night sky is so filled with stars, you can see the Milky Way!!! But the inside of this beautiful well cared for cabin is the real unexpected treasure. Every item in this cabin tells a story. There are books and beautiful things in every corner of every room. It feels like you are stepping into a well loved well cared for family cabin. There's even a small story on one of the walls, that tells the history of the cabin cabin itself. We stayed for a week, admiring the view inside and out. This is one of the best vacations we've had in years, and the beautiful space and home was as much a part of that, as any of the people in my immediate family. We're going to be taking, for years, about that summer we spent a week in the beautiful white house by the sea. Enormous thank you to Ellen Grant, for sharing this once in a lifetime space.
