We were the first renters of Marie
Olson's house. On Sat. June 26,
1999 we arrived and stayed for one
week. We have been back every
summer since for 3 week stays.
That, in itself, is testimony to the
hospitality of the people and the
tranquility of West Quoddy Head.
Hiking the trails of WQH State Park
past the lighthouse, sitting at the
kitchen table watching the eagles,
osprey, gulls and waterfowl,
exploring Campobello Island, our
annual ferry trip from Campobello to
Eastport via Deer Island, fishing at
Gardner or Meddybemps are among
our favorite activities. Each year we
add to our list of places visited.
We highly recomend the Marie Olson
house as a place to stay.
We started staying at Loon Lane cottage in 2003. We have been back every summer since 2010. We just love this quaint home with breathtaking views of Lubec and Campobello Canada. This year we saw several Bald Eagles in our backyard and lobster men harvesting their catch. If you want peace and tranquility this is your place.
My family has enjoyed staying at Junia’s every summer for a week since 2009. It is a beautiful location, quiet, peaceful, with an abundance of wildlife to observe. Bird identification there has become a pastime. There is the challenge of many types of sea birds, ducks, eagles, and gulls. The bird feeder outside the dining room window provides its own dramas. We welcome the mourning doves who cleanup beneath the feeder and the infrequent visit of the brightly colored kestrel trying to grab one but so far to no avail. Endless hours can be spent walking along the shore exploring the fascinating and abundant intertidal life and the endless forms and colors that ocean shaped rocks, minerals and the occasional piece of sea glass can take.
At night we look forward to the view of the lights of Lubec, the Roosevelt Bridge, the Campobello customs station, and the Channel Lighthouse all framed by the starry sky above and reflections off the water below. The lobstermen can be seen in the morning pulling in their pots and at low tide, the clammers busily at work in the bay. There is a joy in the rhythm of the great tides coming and going while the hummingbirds twitter and feast on the fireweed along the edge of the shoreline. At night if the fog rolls in, you can hear the reassuring sound of lighthouse fog horns and the mysterious sound of the groaner buoy off West Quoddy Head.
In the early morning, our daily jog to the picturesque West Quoddy Head lighthouse presents a view of the great cliffs of Grand Manan and Dark Harbor in the distance with perhaps a large ship passing between and ever the possibility of sighting seals, dolphins or a whale. The lighthouse is also the start of a trail with breathtaking views of the Bold Coast and an entrance to the bog trail where the cold mists have created tundra with arctic plants not usually seen south of Canada.
Junia’s West Quoddy Gift Shop is always stocked with something new, interesting, and delightfully educational. The house on Loon Lane is a friendly welcoming place.
The moment I first stepped into Marie Olson’s house in Lubec, I felt I had finally ‘come home’ to my own place on the Maine coast. I had been visiting Lubec each summer for many years and always shopped at the West Quoddy Gift Shop…never realizing that my perfect ‘summer home’ was just down the road. I stayed a week in 2007 and again in 2008…and plan to make it a yearly event.
The house is clean, comfortable, cozy, and so well-furnished…a home…not just a rental. It is perfectly situated…directly on the water overlooking Lubec and Campobello Island. To me, it is magical just to sit on the front lawn and watch the tide come and go…and to watch eagles and seals and other wildlife in the quiet surroundings. There are millions of stars twinkling in the night sky…no nearby light pollution to block the view.
Just down the road is the famous West Quoddy Light and the State Park with wonderful hiking trails. The beach at Carrying Place Cove…within walking distance…is perfect for searching for beach glass…my new favorite ‘walking meditation’. There are many hiking trails in the area…all detailed in the Cobscook Trail Guide. There is a wonderful International Park on Campobello Island…complete with scenic vistas and wonderful beaches and trails. I love to sit at Liberty Point and watch for whales. This ‘Bold Coast’ part of Maine…and the adjacent Campobello Park…are paradise for anyone who loves the outdoors.
The Lubec area is quaint…it is not over run with tourists and traffic like mid-coast Maine. There are good places to eat, nice little shops, and a wonderful library in case you have a rainy day. The people in the area are very friendly and welcoming…I have never felt like a stranger here.
If you are looking for a very comfortable place to stay… in a beautiful setting…with nature at your door-step…and wonderful neighbors…this is the place.
My husband and I spent a wonderful week in this vacation home overlooking the beautiful Lubec Channel. While John spent many happy hours watching the amazing tides from the beach, I found the adirondack chairs at the top the path to the beach the perfect spot to read and watch the birds and boats on the channel. We even enjoyed the foggy days so typical of the Maine coast. I love to listen to the foghorn from the nearby lighthouse. The house is comfortable, spotless, and had everything we needed for the week. We were very pleased with our host's attention to details. The best gift shop in Maine is within walking distance. The area is our favorite place to visit; we've been coming back for 20+ years and never tire of the natural beauty.
