La Porte Rouge is a wonderful property which my family has rented twice. The rooms are huge and well-appointed, not filled with cheap "rental property" furniture. The large, open kitchen/dining area is a joy in which to entertain and the kitchen is well outfitted. The bedrooms are large, and quite a few are ensuite.
The property is also conveniently located just off a main highway, providing easy access to the myriad attractions of the region. I've not rented the property recently because I like the region so much that I have purchased my own house! A renter would be hard-pressed to find such a well-appointed rental property. Also, as beautiful as the pictures are, the property is even prettier in true life.
The second time I've been to the red door was full of lovely things to re-explore and a few new surprises from being there in a new season. The late autumn gardens still blooming, the marshes foggy and beautiful, the bike rides crisp and sunsets spectacular.
We kept the home fires burning, cooked and ate until our bellies bulged and found moments for singing and communion in all parts of the property. Plenty of space for hunkering down and cozying up.
What a gift this place is.
I've twice had the opportunity to stay here with groups of friends – it's an ideal spot for a retreat or vacation.
I'm well familiar with the property and area as it's been my grandparents & aunt's property, so I've also been there many times for family reunions & vacations... the whole region is gorgeous, and the home is just enchanting.
There's wonderful things nearby like the market in Carentan and easy day trips to beautiful places and historic sites (D-day landing beaches, the memorial museum in Caen is fantastic, both the tapestry and cathedral in Bayeux, Mt. St. Michel etc) ...
Really my favorite things are to wander the hedges picking blackberries, walk around the "block" aka a few mile loop through the marshes, do some yoga on the lawn and read a book by the fire.
It's a magical place of retreat that nourishes the soul. Well worth a stay!
La Porte Rouge is everything it claims to be and more! The house itself is fantastic. It was clean and well-maintained. It is at the end of a narrow road and, quite frankly, I have not slept so well as I did here. We spend a wonderful Christmas week and enjoyed home cooked meals, fabulous French wines, game nights, and fires in the fireplace and wood-burning stove.
La Porte Rouge is conveniently located and we were able to see the Bayeux Tapestry, D-Day beaches and museums, and Mont St. Michele. We were also closed to the center of Carentan, which provided access to two supermarkets and the local boulangerie.
We arrived late on the 20th, but the Lemons have a contact (Madame Touzard) who was able to provide a home cooked meal (with wine) and deliver it to us at the house shortly after our arrival. The meal (roasted leg of lamb, mashed potatoes, haricot verts, and a great bottle of wine) for five people was under 100 euro. Having just come from Paris, that was an amazing deal and the food was awesome.
There really aren't enough superlatives sufficient to describe La Porte Rouge and our stay there. There is still so much for us to see and do in Normandy so we will definitely be back and plan on staying here again.
This is a beautiful house on a beautiful estate, large enough to accommodate many guests. It is privately tucked away but still very very close to all the attractions of Normandy. We were able to bring our whole family and another family along with us, and we all had plenty of space. The house is well equipped for anything you need to live, and we were so fortunate to hire the cook that the owners recommended. We fell in love with Normandy. You will love this house.
Our group of 13 could not have been more impressed with the house and the location. The interior (6 bedrooms, modern kitchen, room at the dining room table for everyone) was extremely well maintained. We had expected that it would be, but we had no idea how beautiful the multi-acre grounds would be, including the manicured lawn where we had evening croquet matches. We opted to have Madame Touzard provide dinner for us every night. A wise choice: her meals were sumptuous (we generally spent about 2 hours at the dinner table each evening, enjoying her cooking and multiple bottles of wine) and far more reasonably priced than eating out. Everything in Normandy was within easy driving distance (15 minutes to Utah Beach, 30 minutes to Omaha Beach, 1 hour to Mont St. Michel), and there were too many interesting sites to see them all in a week. The mid-August weather was cooler than in most U.S. locations (high 60's or low 70's most days, with occasional light showers about half the days), so we never had to worry about too much sun or too much heat. You have the sense of being in a rural area, but Carenton is only five minutes away, so supplies were readily accessible when needed.
